THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY

***A Brief Synopsis***

Kruzurk Makshare, as a young magician's apprentice, first encountered the villain, Seed of Cerberus, who was studying with Kruzurk under the master magician, Merlin. While trying to stop the Seed from stealing Merlin's tools of making, Kruzurk is cursed for life by the vindictive Seed.

As a boon to the spirit of Merlin, Kruzurk enacts a clever ruse to bring down the Seed. The plan involves a young highlander, Daynin McKinnon, who is unaware of his role in the great deception. Daynin is torn between his desire to seek riches to rebuild his ancestral home and his duty to his grandfather Ean. Desire wins out, temporarily, leading Daynin on a hair-raising adventure where he meets and falls in love with the beautiful and cunning Sabritha Kilcullen. Together, they are dragged into Kruzurk's plot to destroy the Seed. Along the way, others join them in the campaign, also unaware of the part they are to play in a nightmare of whirlwind escapades many will not survive.

Ultimately, the Seed is bested, leaving Daynin, Sabritha and Kruzurk to divide the spoils left in the ruins of Blackgloom. Daynin must then overcome a host of almost insurmountable enemies, objects and circumstances to return the Blackgloom bounty and Sabritha to his clan's ancestral home on the island of Rhum. There, he hopes to rebuild the family keep, kindle a romance with Sabritha and hold his ground against all comers.

But first, a great chase, an even greater escape and a tremendous running battle ensues, stretching across most of Scotland and the high seas and ending at the walls of Kinloch Keep. At every turn, Daynin is threatened with the loss of the bounty, his dreams and the future of his clan. He must use every ounce of wit and guile to outthink, outfight or outrun a litany of mortal and mystical adversaries and indeed, eventually change the future of the highlands forever.

REVIEWS, REVIEWS, REVIEWS!

THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY

The Blackgloom Bounty is one of those rambling, picaresque fantasies...in a universe strongly resembling the 10th Century border region of present-day Northern England and Southern Scotland. The story rackets along at a tremendous pace, rather like an amusement park ride or a fiendishly complicated Dungeons and Dragons game. At the end of it you are dumped out with a spinning head and a perhaps not-quite accurate memory of everything that went on, but in no doubt that you and everyone else had a tremendously amusing ride.

There is an enormous cast of characters, rushing about, and it was all something to do with curses, stolen inheritances, a stalwart young heir hidden away, a feisty wench, brave warriors, secret tombs, ghosts, wicked noblemen, spells and shape-changing, magic stones and a treasure of wonderful wealth, a sea-monster and then...well, the review would be as long as the book itself if I attempted to do even a short recapitulation. And it wouldn't be anywhere near as amusing.

When young Daynin and his grandfather find a curiously carved stone while plowing their field, they have little idea that it is the legendary Scythian Stone but a wandering magician named Kruzurk Makshare does and with a few brisk preliminaries, Daynin is off and running on the adventure of his life, to find and liberate an enormous treasure, and then to keep hold of it.

The author has concocted an intricate yarn, briskly paced, and in a writing style which...quite frequently sparkles. He also has an ear for conversation... This is the first volume of a projected series, and a worthwhile read for any devotee of the fantasy-adventure genre.

Hi Jon ~ Very nice lens. I am going to give your novel a read. As one fantasy author to another, what is the single best piece of advice you can give me about promoting an indie work? ~ Valerie

Hi Valerie.........the best advice I ever received about writing fiction was this little phrase: "Suspension of Disbelief" which means, essentially, that you want your readers to suspend their disbelief that what they are reading is ONLY fiction and not real. In other words, you want them to totally believe that the storyline is real. Good luck with your writing.

Hello, I have just finished "The Blackgloom Bounty"; which I enjoyed very much. I am about to start the next book in the series, "The Regents of Rhum". My question is on the third installment, "The Scions of Scotia", I can't seem to be able to purchase it on Amazon for my kindle and was wondering if it has been published? I loved the first book of the series and am anxious to read the rest.

The best medieval fantasy I've read since "The Crystal Cave" and the rest of Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy.
