Time to learn and reflect...

I admit, my banked knowledge of history is rather sketchy - and of African American History nearly none. In fact, if it had a style, you'd label it minimalist.

It seems that I naturally enjoy learning only when there is something at hand that I need to research. When it is something concrete, that has a direct relationship to me, then I become rabid.

That's what happened when I stumbled on this excellent set of prints of Black History Leaders at a major estate sale here in Milwaukee. The folder of prints taunted me for months, then I finally relented and launched an extensive Internet research campaign - except that the Internet didn't cough up its usual 283,000 pages of useful info.

So, off to the library (after weeks of postponing...) to settle in at the reference department. What a refreshing surprise to find that the library has an incredible number of tools to research artwork. The librarian was so helpful! I felt humbled and a bit ashamed that I didn't know about the vast resources they had.

So, the mystery I needed to unravel was a folder of 12 prints, signed, titled and numbered by the artist, Clarence Shivers, with gold embossed lettering on the folder "Gallery of Greats" "Miller Brewing Co".

That's all I had to go on - that, and the puny amount of info the Internet coughed up.

As helpful as the librarian was, the sum total of info on this set was a few articles from 1983 and 1986 referencing an touring exhibit of the original paintings.

More on my research

With the minimal amount of information that I found, I was able to piece together the background of this set of prints.

Miller Brewing Co (oddly of no help at all when I called them) commissioned a set of 12 paintings from Clarence Shivers for their annual Black History Month calendar. Very little is known about the research he did on his subjects, and whether any of them posed for him.

The paintings started their 1983 tour in Washington D.C. and continued throughout the US and abroad for four years. It is assumed that Miller had limited edition lithographs printed to go along with the tour. There were only 500 in this series - making them quite a rarity.

The quality is superior! Each print is pencil signed, numbered, and titled by the artist. Very crisp prints, with tissue paper slipped between each one to prevent rubbing, and enclosed in a dark blue folder with gold embossed printing.

This set is in near mint condition, appearing to have never been removed from the envelope! I think the prints would look great lining the walls of a school - and as I suggest in my eBay auction - have a contest for the kids to figure out who each of the subjects is.

New Amazon Voting (Plexo)

A challenging and educational riddle

In my rush at the library research and reference department, I neglected to copy the Black History Month - Gallery of Greats article listing the persons name and associated title...Typical me. So, rather than go back to the downtown library and fight for a parking spot, I churned through the Internet for the answers.

Here is the contest. All you get for clues are the picture and a title - you need to find the name of the African American leader. There are a few "gimmies" because we all know them, but there are some tough ones in this bunch. The answers are on my eBay auction - don't cheat.

At the bottom of this lens I will list each picture and title. Below it will be a comment module for your answers. Remember, no cheating...

How long did it take me to get them all right? That is, if I am right. In total about 6 hours trudging through the Internet, browsing images and biographies. An enlightening experience to say the least.

This wonderful set of prints sold on my eBay store, and they are to be donated to the Colorado Springs Library District.

I love finding cast off treasures at estate sales and second hand stores! My home is full of artwork by unknown and naive artists - with a smattering of listed, well-known artists.

My eBay store just scratches the surface of what I have in storage. I prefer to thoroughly research the artwork before listing - it's a fun thing to do, and I learn something in the process.

I love to octopi my time with Squidoos!
