There are more cards with a value of 10 in the deck than any other card. So a simple method to remember MOST of the Basic Strategy rules is to assume that every card about to be drawn will be a 10. Let me explain....

Say the dealer has a 4 and you have a total of 15. Assuming the cards to be dealt are all 10's then you should get 25 and bust. But the dealer should get 14...then draw again (10 remember) and bust with 24.

So the idea is for you to sit and let the dealer bust. It's not about building a hand to 17 or more all the time, it's about winning. If the dealer should bust then sit tight and let them bust. It doesn't always pan out that way but it's the best way to play. The basic strategy rule says if you have 15 against a dealers 4 then you should sit. See how assuming 10's are going to be dealt worked.

Now let's assume you still have 15 but the dealer has an eight. Again assuming 10's will be drawn, you should bust with 25 and the dealer should get 18. So since the dealer should win you might as well take a card and go for it, since statistically you should lose anyway. The basic strategy rule for 15 v's dealers 8 is to take a card.

Let me be very clear. Assuming 10's are going to be dealt is not guaranteed....it's just a way of remembering MOST of the Basic Strategy Rules...but not all of them.

So to summarize the idea is to either let the dealer bust if their cards are 6 or less, or try and beat the dealer if they have 7 or more.

Here are a few of the rules for doubling and splitting. The most common are:

Always split 8's and aces.
Never Split 10's
Always double when you have 11 except if the dealer has an Ace.

There are a few more rules that are a bit more involved.
