Isn't Black An Odd Choice?
In recent years several designers have featured black wedding dresses in their bridal collections. Whilst this may strike some as a rather unconventional choice, it is not unprecedented.
In the 1800's most women would marry in the best dress they could afford rather than buying a bridal gown which would only be worn once. As white, cream and ivory are not the most practical colours for repeated wear women tended to marry in dark colours, including black. Black was also a common choice for women marrying widowers.
More recently black has become a popular colour for evening weddings, a trend that looks set to spread into daytime weddings.
Many brides struggle to locate a black wedding dress by only searching bridal shops however a formal evening gown will work just as well and is likely to be cheaper than having a wedding dress custom made in black.

Tips For Choosing A Wedding Dress
Whatever colour or theme you opt for there are a few tips you should follow to get the best out your big day.
1. Give yourself plenty of time to browse. You are more likely to make the best choice for you when you're relaxed. There's a lot of choice out there give yourself plenty to see everything on offer.
2. Be honest with yourself. No matter how much weight you intend to lose for the big day, you still need to pay attention to your body shape. What do you want to emphasize and what would you rather conceal? There are loads of books and magazines that give you tips on the best clothes for your body shape. Be guided by these rules.
3. Be selective who you take shopping with you. You need someone honest and above all patient.
4. Set a budget and stick to it. Your going to look pretty foolish in a couture gown if you've blown the budget and the groom is reduced to wearing an old borrowed suit. Don't be tempted to go to the other extreme and go too cheap. Your gown budget should be consistent with the rest of the wedding budget.
5. If you are doing it on a shoestring don't dismiss going vintage. For the price of a bottom of the range wedding gown you can pick up some beautiful designer pieces which have only been worn once. Alterations can be done fairly cheaply if need be.
6. Get a friend to take a full length picture of you in every gown you try on. Go home, review the pictures and then make your final choice.
7. Bear in mind you'll be in that gown all day. Will you be comfortable, can you move reasonably freely?
Is it appropriate for the time of year and venue?
8. If you are skilled and I mean really skilled with a sewing machine give thought to making the gown or even some of the accessories.
9. Remember you will be wearing the gown. Constructive criticism and advice can all be helpful but don't be put off a gown you love by other people's opinions. If you feel it's right for you, then it is.
10. Consider getting a colour analysis before choosing your dress. If pure white leaves you looking washed out consider an off white or champagne. Similarly if black just isn't for you consider a deep purple or black-red.
