Hirsi Ali

Former politician in the Netherlands

Thanks for your comment spirituality. Here's the post I made about Hirsi Ali in my blog:

So now, ladies and gentlemen, live from Somalia and the Netherlands! Give it up for new-to-Washington Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Muslim heretic, self-proclaimed "Infidel," whose memoir by that name is at No. 7 on the New York Times bestseller list! She was elected to the Dutch parliament, but resigned in a scandal that brought down the ruling party.

Nyamko Ana Sabuni - First Black Minister in Sweden

Swedish Minister for Integration and Gender Equality

Nyamko Ana Sabuni (born 31 March 1969) is the Swedish Minister for Integration and Gender Equality. A member of the Liberal People's Party, Sabuni has been a member of the Riksdag (Parliament) since 2002 and a member of the party board since 2004.

Nyamko Sabuni was born in Bujumbura in Burundi where her father, a left-wing politician from Zaire, lived in exile. The family obtained political asylum in Sweden in 1981 and Sabuni grew up in Kungsängen, north of Stockholm. She studied law at Uppsala University, migration policy at Mälardalen University in Eskilstuna, and information and media communications at Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm.

Sabuni's mother is Muslim and her father Christian. She is non-religious.

Sabuni was a member of board of the Liberal Youth of Sweden from 1996 to 1998. She has cited the murder of the Ivorian refugee Gerard Gbeyo by a Swedish skinhead in the town of Klippan in 1995 as one of the reasons she became involved in politics.

In a July 17, 2006, opinion letter published in the Swedish newspaper Expressen, Sabuni called for mandatory gynecological examinations of all schoolgirls in order to prevent genital mutilation (also known as female circumcision). She has also advocated the inclusion of honor killings as an independent category within the Swedish criminal code.

On 6 October 2006, the new Swedish coalition government which emerged from the election announced Sabuni's appointment as the new Minister for Integration and Gender Equality issues. She is the first person of African descent to be appointed as Minister in a Swedish government.

Diane Abbott

The first black woman ever elected to the British Parliament.

Introduction
In 1987 Diane Abbott made history by becoming the first black woman ever elected to the British Parliament. She has since built a distinguished career as a parliamentarian, broadcaster and commentator.

In the Beginning
Diane was born in London in 1953. She attended the grammar school Harrow County and then went on to Newnham College Cambridge where she obtained a Masters degree in history.

When she left Cambridge University Diane joined Government as a Home Office Civil Servant. She went on to work for the lobby group the National Council for Civil Liberties, then she became a journalist. She worked extensively as a freelancer and she went on to work as a reporter for the breakfast television company TV-AM and Thames Television. And she also worked as a public relations consultant for various public sector clients.

In Parliament
Diane has served on a number of parliamentary committees on social and international issues. She was also elected on to the National Executive of the Labour Party. For most of the 1990's she also served on the Treasury Select Committee of the House of Commons. This is the committee which deals with business and finance matters. As a member of this committee Diane travelled frequently to Washington DC, New York, Frankfurt and other financial centres. She met with senior politicians, bankers and financial regulators internationally and she helped to author a series of official reports on issues such as Britain's entry into the Euro. She went on to serve on the Foreign Affairs Select Committee. As a member of that committee she travelled to Kenya, Uganda, China, Hong Kong and many countries in Europe. She took a particular interest in human rights. Most recently she has set up a special parliamentary committee investigating gun crime.

In the Public Eye
Diane is an experienced public speaker and broadcaster. She has spoken at colleges and universities all over the United States including Ivy League universities like Harvard. She also appears regularly on radio and television. Her most recent appearances include hosting a phone-in show for LBC radio, presenting a programme on the Treasury for BBC Radio 4 and regular appearances on the BBC1 late night political discussion show with Andrew Neil and Michael Portillo MP.

Black TV newsman is French first

A black journalist has been chosen to present one of France's most popular TV news programmes.

Harry Roselmack, 32, will become the first non-white person to present a prime-time mainstream TV news programme on TF1 when he takes over in July 2006. Roselmack has a strong journalistic background, including working as a reporter for Radio France. In 2005 president Jacques Chirac urged the media to hire more ethnic minority journalists after riots by Arab youths.

'Advance'

Violence broke out in several French suburbs in November, mostly in areas with a high concentration of ethnic minorities.

Amirouche Laidi, president of Club Averroes which campaigns for minority representation in the media, called it a "huge advance".

"This is like a bombshell for us - a black presenting the 8pm news on the biggest television station in France," he said.

Roselmack, who is from the French Caribbean island of Martinique, will take over from star presenter Patrick Poivre d'Arvor while he is on his summer break.

Audrey Pulvar

France gains first black presenter on main evening bulletin by Jon Henley

It is immediately noticeable to British or American viewers of French television: there are no black faces. No newsreaders, no chatshow hosts, no gameshow guests; at most, a handful of actors in mainly stereotyped roles. So when Audrey Pulvar appeared 9/2004 as co-presenter of Soir 3, it caused something of a commotion: the 32-year-old journalist from the French Caribbean island of Martinique was the first black newsreader to present the main evening news on a national French TV station.

It is immediately noticeable to British or American viewers of French television: there are no black faces. No newsreaders, no chatshow hosts, no gameshow guests; at most, a handful of actors in mainly stereotyped roles. So when Audrey Pulvar appeared this month as co-presenter of Soir 3, it caused something of a commotion: the 32-year-old journalist from the French Caribbean island of Martinique was the first black newsreader to present the main evening news on a national French TV station.

"French TV just does not reflect the reality of French society," Pulvar told the Guardian. "There is a whole part of the French population that is not represented there. Or if it is, it's stigmatised in dreadful cliches - the black dealer, the Moroccan greengrocer." In a damning report earlier this year, the High Council on Integration demanded that the government make it a condition of every broadcaster's licence that immigrants be "fairly and properly represented". Days later, the state broadcaster France Télévisions, which runs three of the country's six main TV channels, unveiled a plan to boost ethnic minorities' presence both on screen and behind the scenes. "The French have to be able to recognise themselves," said the broadcaster's chief executive, Marc Tessier. "Fifteen percent of our population are immigrants of non-European origin. Watching TV, no one would ever know it."

Pulvar acknowledges that her appointment to the France 3 evening news came in the context of this long-overdue change. "My colour was a necessary, but, I hope, not a sufficient condition," she said. "But at the same time I felt I deserved this job: I've been 10 years in the profession, I've worked hard. I hope to be judged as a journalist, not as a black journalist." The pale face of French television is a reflection of the fact that few west or north African immigrants have moved far up the socio-economic ladder.

Survey: Blacks in France Say They Face Racial Discrimination

By Lisa Bryant

More than half of blacks living in France say they face racial discrimination, according to the first-ever survey on the country's black population. The findings are troubling for a country that has long prided itself on its human rights record, and its ostensibly color-blind integration model. According to a survey conducted by the TNS-Sofres polling agency, 61 percent of blacks living in France say they have experienced at least one racist incident within the past year. More than one in 10 of the 13,000 respondents said they were frequently the target of racism that ranged from verbal aggression to difficulty finding housing or jobs. The French advocacy group The Representative Council of Black Associations commissioned the survey. Its president, Patrick Lozes, says these are troubling statistics. Lozes predicts the poll will change things in France. Until now, he says, blacks have never been counted. And a population that is not counted, does not count. Blacks are not counted because census and other official surveys are barred from compiling statistics based on religion or race. But some experts estimate there are about five million blacks living in France.

The head of the Movement Against Racism and for Friendship Between Peoples, Mouloud Aounit, says he is not surprised by the survey's findings. Aounit says racism exits in French daily life. Look at the Senate, the National Assembly, regional councils, he says. Ethnic representation is totally absent.
France has long argued all of its citizens are equal under its revolutionary creed of liberty, equality and fraternity. For this reason, the government - and many French - are against affirmative action policies favoring minorities. But many of the poorest French - including many ethnic Africans and Arabs - remain locked in aging housing projects and other run-down dwellings. Advocacy groups say they rarely enjoy the same educational and employment opportunities as white French. Only 10 of France's 577-member National Assembly are black. Blacks remain similarly underrepresented in the private sector -- less likely to find jobs, experts say, and less likely to be promoted when they do. There are disturbing trends to the contrary. In a survey last year, one in three French described themselves as "a bit" or "somewhat" racist. In another, published last week, 13-percent of respondents said they would likely vote for far-right, anti-immigrant leader Jean-Marie le Pen in April presidential elections.

It was really a pleasure to meet the ladies, especially Ms. Ayaan Hirsi Ali. I believe that Black Women all over the world are truely special. I also believe that I begin to collect African Art because of such a strong representation of the Black Woman. Thanks

I'd like to pass on my friendship and services to new black expats or black Americans working/living in Scotland as I have moved here permanently since the Summer 06. Please contact me at caribnlass@yahoo.com and I'd be happy to help those trying to adjust to life overseas.

Wow, this is a fantastic lens. I hadn't realized that Dianne Abbott was the first Black woman MP. I always feel the Brits are so far ahead of the US in matters of race, which in many ways they are. I'm adding you to my burgeoning lensroll because there's too much here for one sitdown!

Thanks for a great lens. I was so happy to see Gloria Naylor's Women of Brewster Place on your book list. This is a book I loved many years ago, talked up, leant to someone, never ran across again, but never stopped talking about either. I've added it to my Amazon wish list. Yipee!

"My wife and I are moving to Scotland (Glasgow) in July and will be there for a year on business. While I'm a white guy from the Midwest who grew up in Texas and should have fewer problems, she's a black woman who grew up in Harlem. I've been looking around for expat sites in general but had an eye specifically on resources for black women (from support groups to contacts to ideas for hair
salons...). I'd love to put her in contact with you but first was wondering if you knew of anybody up in the northern U.K. we might get to know.

Thanks, and great site!

Simply fabulous! Men can find much needed information and insight on this site as well. What a great idea and adventure for you. I wish you all the best. Keep up the good work. I think you are on to something that keep the expatriots of the African diasporia tightly woven in foreign lands.

Are there groups out there for Blacks that live or want to live in Europe? Thank
