Lovin' us! Links, Videos, Quotes, Opinions that Uplift Black People & Cultures of the World

I love people. Especially Black ones, or those who have a hint of the Blackness in their own hues. I wanna share the beautiful things about Black folks and what they do/think/love.

That's me on the right. My old friends Oumar and Khara in the picture represent to me the range of color and backgrounds we have. I'm a southern gal from NC, pure-T African American. Oumar's from Senegal but lives in MIA. Khara's dad is African American and she hails from Cali. We all met in school at FIU. All of us love Latin, West African music, Hip Hop, jazz, radical thinking, etc. Anyway, that's a mini version of diversity among we who love our Blackness.

This lens is a not-so-comprehensive look at Africa's children all over the universe. Read on to see what can happen here:

  • I put up a list of ways to engage in Black World Cultures. That'll change as I do. Sign the guestbook and respond, if thou pleasest.

  • I love YouTube just like the rest o' y'all. So I will post related videos, and of course you can vote for them if you like.

  • Respond to quotes (is this true?) in the Word World Black Box by signing the guestbook below.

  • Please vote on links you like (or don't) - the links connect you to artists, writers, thinkers, and others who I think represent Black World Cultures.

As I learn to move around squidoo, you'll learn from the things I add so keep up with me and keep in touch.

Thanks for browsing, reading, responding, being. Communicate suggestions or compliments (no insults please!) in the Guestbook or email me at kali@kaliferguson.com.

Love, Kali

How to love Black People

Things we can do to promote appreciation of Black folks around the world...

  • Learn about us! Go to the library or stay right here on your 'puter. I'll post lots of ways you can read/hear/see about the marvels of your Black friends.
  • Hang out where THEY hang out. And no, I'm not talking about BET.
  • Don't believe everything you think. You (and I) were brought up to believe detrimental things about Black people. If you watch TV or movies you still get these false messages. Critical thinking and different perspectives help. Find ways to immerse yourself in these tools.

Word World Black Box

Is this true?

"...I once had a conversation with a black woman friend who asked...what I wanted in a partner. I told her...someone committed to open, honest communication, to processing and talking things over, especially if there was conflict. I can still remember her hearty laughter as she responded: 'If that's what you want then you are not talking about being with a black male.' ...I...hold onto the belief that black males are as capable of giving love as anyone else."

Conversation

I'm gonna put up my opinions and questions and you're gonna respond right here.

Why do brown/black people still have so far to go? Or maybe we don't. You tell me.

We're good. You worry too much. Brown/black folks are just fine, better off than ever. Look at Obama!

kaliferguson says:

Black people and our contributions to the world are under-appreciated. What's more, we are demonized by mainstream media, even in places where we control content (like BET!).

The effects of slavery/racism/white supremacy still rule our minds subconsciously. That's why we cut up sometimes.

momsherbs says:

We still need to know where we came from to know where we are going. Most African-American people can not go past slavery as far as our ancestory. Check out this youtube. We go back and far and the original tribes of Israel! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQYb0hIIIWg

Thanks M, and thanks for taking the time to recommend the video. It's posted in my youtube voting module.

I have a cd of music of some Jewish people in Uganda, very calming. It's called Abayudaya, recorded by Smithsonian Folkways. Have you seen/heard it?

Please keep sharing, I love your contributions!
