Notebooks and Journals to Inspire

From gratitude journals to travel journals; from keeping a record of medications to baring our souls, our journals are often our very best friends. I use mine for recording appreciation for the smallest things, Zentangling, doodling, art journaling and just keeping 'to-do' lists. I am unable to resist buying blank books, notebooks and journals and my collection of filled, half-filled and still-to-be filled books are among my most precious possessions.

I've been exploring, gleaning and gathering some rather delightful examples to add to my stash... have a look.

Keeping a Gratitude Journal

Can Change Your Life

If you have read my Appreciate Your Way to Happiness page, then you will know why I prefer the word 'appreciate' to 'gratitude'. However, I've never heard of an ''appreciation journal' so 'gratitude journal' will have to do for now.

So why would you want to keep a gratitude journal. Sounds rather tedious, doesn't it? Just having to keep a list of everything you are grateful for - surely that's punishment, not pleasure? It feels like that the first few days but it's now become a habit that I can't break. And the more I do it, the more it seems I have more to appreciate. And when I am 'appreciating in advance' then things go really well!

There's some kind of magic in writing stuff down that you want to happen. Write it like it has already happened and you get that 'life imitating art' thing going on. Try it, it's true!

Simple Abundance Gratitude Journal

Sarah Ban Breathnach

"Gratitude is the most passionate transformative force in the cosmos," promises author Sarah Ban Breathnach (Simple Abundance) in her introduction. So that everyone can experience the transformational rewards of being grateful, Ban Breathnach designed a day-by-day journal for counting one's blessing. Years of disciplined gratitude have taught Ban Breathnach that "if you give thanks for five gifts every day, in two months you may not look at your life in the same way as you might now." Ideally, the journal writer will feel less discontent and "complicated need" and instead feel more awareness of simple abundance. The journal itself is highly inviting--bordered with simple country colors of cream, corn yellow, and dried sage. But even more inviting are the inspirational quotes sprinkled throughout, such as Henry Van Dyke's message: "Gratitude is twofold--love coming to visit us and love running out to greet a welcome guest." --Gail Hudson

IdeaMom says, "I simply love Sarah Ban Breathnach's Simple Abundance. And yes, the gratitude journal is a life changing experience. I would recommend it for anyone. This book is also nice if you can sum up your daily gratitude in a few words. I have a few friends who feel 5 lines for 5 daily seeds of gratitude is sufficient.

However, if you are like me and enjoy journaling. If your 5 items that you are grateful for turns in to 7, 10, even 20 items each day (believe me, once you get into the habit of the gratitude journal, you will become grateful for everything) -- then you need to purchase another journal. I would recommend buying this book for the inspiration, but buy a beautiful blank journal later as your gratitude grows!"

A Journal is Not Just for Writing In

What else can you do with it then?

You can do anything in your journal. Well, almost anything. Writing of course: record your day's events, keep your lists of appreciation, shopping list, goals, dreams, rants, confidences, fiction... and it goes on.

You can also sketch, scribble, collage, crayon, paint, tear and draw. Take pages out, cut holes in pages, burn the edges, add embellishments and completely transform it into something else.

Stick in message of love from your partner, paste in notes from your kids, glue news clippings, photos or anything at all from tickets to buttons. For even more fun... and it will make you giggle... create a mini-me to populate your pages.

Take a look at Gwen Diehn's gorgeous Decorated Page for inspiration on how to make your journal truly personal to you.

Zoe says, "A new book by Gwen Diehn is like freshly discovered wine: rich, pungent and colorful. Not only does Ms. Diehn know how to make a book, she excels at writing one. I spent an entire hot summer day savoring the words and images in Decorated Journal.

This book is a feast for the journal maker and perhaps a lifesaver for the novice. From page one, you are taken on a journey that covers materials, journal writing and the history of journaling. The breadth of Ms. Diehn's "The Decorated Journal" is nearly encyclopedic. Early chapters include such tidbits as a new way to use absorbent ground. Sprinkled with fascinating trivia, but never trivial, you discover in "Brains on Paper" about Tupperware's Mr. Tupper's journals and rediscover in "Patterns Lost and Found" how others make a journal personal. The book's concluding chapter is filled with impressive instructions on journal making. If you are not familiar with Ms. Diehn's work, look for her other books and find her instructions on the coptic stitch in Making Books That Fly, Fold, Wrap, Hide, Pop Up, Twist, And Turn: Books for Kids to Make (don't let the title fool you); no other book binding instructor or writer describes this stitch as well.

This book is a must have for any journal reader or maker, newcomer, late bloomer or daily record keeper. It's intelligent and written intelligently, the way I've come to expect from a book by Gwen Diehn.
