Blank Chore Charts Won My Kids Over

Ranked #1,083 in Parenting & Kids, #34,797 overall

Using their blank chore charts, my kids learned fantastic lessons. They thought I (their mom) was just nagging them into shape. But I knew they would be hooked once they discovered what kids charts of all kinds could do for them.

Of course, getting things done is not my kids' primary concern. But you know what? When children get used to utilizing a childs chore chart of any kind, they are primed for having better organizational skills in the future.

Three of my kids are grown now and all of them are productive adults who know how to get a job done. And I watched them use charts, then planners, then computer programs to get more and more organized as they matured.

Blank chore charts taught my kids lessons - one day at a time.

Here are some of the simple lessons my kids learned using their chore charts.

-- The power of negotiation.
Did my kids want something? A privilege of some sort? A reward? They learned the household rules quickly. If you want something (like permission) from Mom, then bring something of your own to the table. Give to get. Like a completed homework or chore chart with no prodding and no nagging.

-- Pleasing mom is good. Very, very good.
An important lesson in nearly every home I've ever been privileged to be a part of is "when Mom's happy, everyone's happy". That is true in our home, too. I told my kids straight up what made me happy: obedient kids with a cheerful attitude. Their willingness to take on age-appropriate responsibilities truly did make me very happy for them, for I knew how vital that skill would be later on in their lives. By using blank chore charts filled out with each child's specific responsibilities, we all knew exactly what was expected of us.

And yes, I made a BIG DEAL out of it when they did their part. That's the point!!

-- The sooner it's done, the sooner it's done.
It didn't take my kids long to learn that procrastination actually worked against their own wishes. If they wanted play time, the fastest route to that play time was getting their work done - and their school planner, printable homework charts or customized chore charts showed them exactly what they had to do.
