Ichigo Kurosaki is a teenager gifted with the ability to see spirits. His life is drastically changed by the sudden appearance of a Soul Reaper-one who governs the flow of souls between the human world and the afterlife-named Rukia Kuchiki, who arrives in search of a Hollow, a dangerous lost soul. When Rukia is severely wounded defending Ichigo from the Hollow, she attempts to transfer half of her reiatsu (spiritual pressure) energy to Ichigo so that he can defeat the Hollow. However, Ichigo takes almost all of her energy, transforming into a Soul Reaper and allowing him to defeat the Hollow with ease. With her powers diminished, Rukia is left stranded in the human world until she can recover her strength. In the meantime, Ichigo must take over Rukia's role as a Soul Reaper, battling Hollows and guiding souls to the afterlife realm known as the Soul Society.

As time passes and Rukia has yet to return to the Soul Society, her Soul Reaper superiors learn about her whereabouts and actions and sentence her to death for performing the illegal act of transferring her powers. Although he is unable to stop Rukia's departure to the Soul Society, Ichigo resolves to rescue her with the aid of several of his spiritually aware classmates, Orihime Inoue, Yasutora Sado, and Uryu Ishida, and the ex-Soul Reapers Yoruichi Shihoin and Kisuke Urahara. Yasutora Sado, also known as Chad, is a Human teenager who lives in Karakura Town. Sado has a very loyal personality. He is quite loyal to his friends, especially Ichigo, who is one of his closest friends, even going as far as to try and defeat a Gotei 13 captain to go help him. Sado does not have awareness of ghosts at first. Later on, when Uryu Ishida duels with Ichigo, Uryu unleashes a multitude of Hollows upon the town and Sado is pressed into battle with another Hollow in order to protect Karin Kurosaki. It is this event that awakens his spiritual powers, which manifest as armor on his right arm. He is later brought to Kisuke Urahara along with Orihime to have everything about the Shinigami world explained.

Kenpachi Zaraki is the captain of the 11th Division in the Gotei 13. He is the eleventh Kenpachi to hold that position. Kenpachi is a muscular Shinigami with a wild and aggressive appearance that fits his personality. Kenpachi did not attend the Shino (shinigami) Academy. He is also the only captain that does not know the name of his Zanpakuto; because of this, he cannot use his Bankai. In addition, he has no apparent skill (or at least interest) in Kido ("spirit way","spells") and Flash Steps. However, he more than makes up for his faults with his sheer power and endurance, easily making him one of the strongest Shinigami in Soul Society.

Grimmjow is blunt, sarcastic, and quite sadistic, revealing a psychotic grin whenever he becomes excited, much like Kenpachi Zaraki or Hollow Ichigo. He develops an additional grudge against Ichigo Kurosaki for wounding him during their first and second fights, and is eager to return the favor.
