Our Blessed VIRGIN MARY!!!

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mary (Aramaic, Hebrew: , Mary Miriam Arabic:, Maryam), usually referred to by Christians as the Virgin Mary or Saint Mary, was a Jewish woman of Nazareth in Galilee, identified in the New Testament[Mt. 1:16,18-25] [Lk. 1:26-56] [2:1-7] as the mother of Jesus of Nazareth. Muslims also refer to her as the Virgin Mary or Syeda Mariam which means Our Lady Mary. In Islam she is the mother of the Prophet Jesus, Issa in the Arabic language. The New Testament describes her as a virgin (Greek parthénos)[2] Christians and Muslims believe that she conceived her son miraculously by the agency of the Holy Spirit. This took place when she was already the betrothed wife of Saint Joseph and was awaiting the concluding rite of Jewish marriage, the formal home-taking ceremony. Mary is also described in the Qur'an, the 19th sura (chapter) of the Qur'an Sura Maryam (ArabicBratu Maryam. It is named after Mary%u0101m, the Semitic name for Mary, Mother of Jesus (Issa).

The New Testament begins its account of Mary's life with the Annunciation, the appearance to her of the angel Gabriel heralding her divine selection to be mother of Jesus. However, early non-biblical writings state that she was the daughter of Joachim and Saint Anne. The Bible records Mary's role in key events of the life of Jesus from his virgin birth to his crucifixion. Other apocryphal writings tell of her subsequent death and bodily assumption into heaven.

A number of important doctrines concerning Mary are held by Christian churches. Primary among these are that Mary lived a sinless life, and that as mother of Jesus, she became Theotokos, literally the "God-bearer", or "Mother of God". This doctrine was confirmed by the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in the year 431. Christians of the major ancient traditions including the Catholic and the Orthodox offer prayers to God through Mary and venerate her as intercessor and mother of the church. Many Protestants, however, do not follow these devotions. Mary is also honoured in Islam as the virgin mother of Jesus. In Jewish Toledot Yeshu Jesus was recorded as the son of Mary and Joseph ben Pantera.

A MORNING BEYOND BELIEF

EasterMy dearest everyone,

I will leave you with your lonesome selves for Maundy, Thursday and Good Friday...and move on to Sunday....

The road to Calvary, through the city streets, up the winding dirt path to the top of the hill, and the clearing where the crosses were set up...that is for you to take. "Come, take up you cross, and follow me..."

This is your time. You will either go that path, or you would sit it out elsewhere, as you have done in the past so many years. Don't go through the rituals just for the sake of performing them.

If you want to "follow Christ," go..take up your own suffering, your own pains, your own distress, shortcomings, failures, all the heart aches and frustrations, all the sins committed and acts omitted, every piece of your agony...carry them with you to Calvary...offer them there with Jesus...

Cleanse your spirit of all the grime and soot and cobwebs, all the negative energies, all the "what could have beens," all the ifs and buts, all the "wish I could have this or that," all the unfulfilled desires....purgate your soul from all these....and go. If you care to tell me about it, share...If you decide to keep this privately to yourself, be sure you have come to terms with yourself. If you would not want to try anything new this year, just saunter along, be as it was, Hey....this is your wake up call, and I will not do this one more time.

Yes, we create a heart, and lock it in our chests, and pray that what we have made can save us.... Open that heart, NOW, and let it see, taste, hear, feel, touch all that is beautiful...in yourself, in the people around you...in the community you live in. To those of you who follow the tradition of our grandparents and parents, the seven churches visitations begin tomorrow night after the five o'clock mass. (No masses are celebrated in the morning). The altars and all religious images are shrouded in purple and the Blessed Sacrament in exposed in a minor altar of the churches. We pray the seven Our Fathers, Hail Marys and Glory Bes as we move from one church to the other.
This was a like an excursion when I was young(er). And through the years, the ritual has not lost its sense of combined religiosity and family outing. Now, with my expanded family of grandsons, we can still fit in one big van as we chart the churches to visit. And then, we have the little tykes wanting to buy all those little plastic toys at the church gates, all the peanuts and balut, all the junk food or the native delicacies that line the sidewalks...wow, what fun, and this, until the middle of the night, and then home for hot, hot arroz caldo, and then sleep the whole of Friday until the three o'clock "Siete Palabras" (Seven Last Words)...which we usually commemorate in a small cloister convent (the Carmelitenuns' sanctuary) in Gilmore where I used to go with my grandparents since I was three years old..ages and ages ago, and continuing. Some traditions get enshrined in our blood and I transfer it now to my progeny... You could do this, too, wherever you are located. And why not? Your children and their children deserve the convergence of our genealogy somewhere, regardless
of the foreign culture we are presently located in.

And now, for that morning beyond belief:
Early Sunday, you have Mary and another Mary walking to the mountain tomb where Jesus' body was laid to rest after He was taken down from the Cross last Friday afternoon. It is foggy, the sun barely up the horizon, dew from the grass wetting the hems of the long dresses of the women who carry the oil and fresh white clothing for the dead Jesus. Why did Mary Magdalene mistake Jesus for a gardener? Was she alone or with Salome and another Mary? Accounts of the discovery of the empty tomb sound breathless and fragmentary. The women were "afraid yet filled with joy,' says Matthew; "trembling and bewildered," says Mark. Jesus makes no dramatic, well-orchestrated entrance to quell all doubts; the early reports seem wispy. In short, the Gospels do not present the resurrection of Jesus in the manner of apologetics, with arguments arranged to prove each main point...but rather, as a shocking intrusion that no one was expecting, least of all Jesus' timorous disciples. The first witnesses reacted as any of us would react -- as I would react if I answered the doorbell and suddenly saw my dead friend standing on my front porch: with fear and great joy.

Fear is the reflexive human response to an encounter with the supernatural. The fear, though, was overpowered by joy because the news that they heard was news too good to be true, yet news so good it had to be true.

Jesus was alive!

Dreams of a Messiah came surging back as the women ran, on legs of fear and joy., to tell the disciples the news. Even as the women ran to report their discovery, the soldiers who stood guard at the tomb were rehearsing an alibi; they had to have a good reason for the loss of the dead body of Jesus. Those soldiers standing guard outside Jesus' tomb were the only eye-witnesses of the greatest miracle in history. Matthew says that when the earth quaked and an angel appeared, bright as lightning, they shook and became like dead men. But there was an astounding fact; later that afternoon the soldiers who had seen proof of the resurrection with their own eyes changed their story to a lie.

"His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep."

But their alibi had obvious weaknesses...a huge stone rolled away without
disturbing their sleep? And how could they identify the disciples if they were asleep? But, for now, the alibi kept the soldiers out of trouble with their masters.
Like everything else in Jesus' life, the resurrection drew forth-contrasting responses. Those who believed were transformed; infused with hope and courage, they went out to change the world. Those who did not believe found ways to ignore strong evidence. Jesus has prescribed as much: "if they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead." who read the Gospels from the other side of Easter, who have the day printed on our calendars, forget how HARD it was for the disciples to believe. In itself, the empty tomb did not convince them: that fact only demonstrated: "He is not here," nor "He is risen." Convincing those skeptics would require intimate, personal encounters with the one who had been their Master for three years, and over the next six weeks Jesus provided exactly that.
When Jesus resurrected, there were no angels in the sky singing choruses, no kings from afar bearing gifts. Jesus showed up in the most ordinary circumstances: a private dinner; two men walking along a road; a woman weeping in a garden; some fishermen working in a lake. Life continues in that vein for nearly six weeks: Jesus is there, and then He's gone. The appearances are not spectral; but flesh and blood encounters. Jesus can always prove his identity -- no other living person bears the scars of crucifixion -- yet often the disciples fail to recognize him right away. Painstakingly, He condescends to me the level of their skepticism. For suspicious Thomas, it means a personal invitation to finger the scars. For the humiliated Peter, it means a bittersweet scene of rehabilitation in front of six friends. Jesus appearances, approximately a dozen, show a definite pattern: Jesus visited small groups of people in a remote area or closeted indoors. Although these private rendezvous bolstered the faith of those who already believed in Jesus, as far as we know, not a single unbeliever saw Jesus after his death. Reading the accounts of the execution and the resurrection back-to-back, I have sometimes wondered why Jesus did not make more appearances. Why limit visitations to His friends? Why not reappear on Pilate's porch or before the Sanhedrin, this time with a withering blast against those who had condemned Him? Perhaps what He said to Thomas answers my questions:

"Because you have seen me, you have believed."
Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Those privileged few could hardly disbelieve. But what about the others? Very soon, Jesus' personal appearances would come to a halt, leaving only
"Those who have not seen." The church would stand or fall based on how persuasive these eyewitnesses would be for all -- including us today -- who have not seen. Jesus had six weeks in which to establish His identity for all time. That is the seed of our religion. The cornerstone of our faith. The Resurrection is the epicenter of belief.

"It is not a belief that grew up within the church; it is the belief around which the church itself grew up, and the 'given' upon which its faith is based." (CH Dodd) The poet, John Updike states the same truth more poetically:

Make no mistake: if He rose at all
It was as His body;
if the cells dissolution did not reverse,
the molecules reknit,
the amino acids rekindle,
the Church will fall.

"Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed," Jesus said to doubting Thomas after silencing his doubts with tangible proof of the Easter miracle. Except for the five hundred or so people to whom the resurrected Jesus appeared, every Christian who has ever lived falls into the category of "blessed."

PROJECT RELIEF RE:LIFE

ONE HOPE, ONE LIFE, ONE FAMILY AT A TIME

The suffering of a people spares no one who has a heart and hope is the touch of healing.

The horrendous devastation that typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) has caused in the Metropolitan Manila area and the adjacent provinces have changed the condition of many lives. The waters had nowhere to go because the rivers, the lake, the floodways are clogged with mud and debris. All the contents of homes were reduced to smithereens by the fury of the currents. And while we try to do our best to gather from the murky residue whatever else may be salvaged, the damage is beyond retrieval.

Project RELIEF RE:LIFE is a long term holistic approach addressing the families whose sorrows are more severe, than the loss of property, but also the loss of a loved one: a child, a mother, a father, a sibling or, in some excruciating instances, the loss of children, parents, a whole family, all mercilessly drowned by the rampage of the currents and the waters that swelled in a matter of minutes to the rooftops. The horrifying scene was beyond words: outstretched hands above the fury of the floods, desperately flailing for help a family on a raft that violently smashed the underbelly of a bridge instantly perished in full view of those who desperately attempted rescue the sight of a father who frantically foraged the hillside hoping that the lifeless, muddied body of the young boy he already held in his arms was not his son, a woman found seated and dead in her living room when the waters subsided, her eyes still staring in shock. And there were more. Read the rest of this entry

Prayer Power for Change

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our prayer is an acknowledgement that there is a Higher Power. No matter what religion or creed we adhere to, a whisper of prayer never escapes our lips in times of distress, loneliness or when we are in trouble.

When we pray, we acknowledge the might and power of God as we express the joy and love we feel for Him. When we receive His good graces, we offer thanksgiving through our prayers. When we surrender ourselves in petition, we show our faith to the Will of God. Our petition is our request for the grace of God.

"I say to you, all the things whatever you ask for in prayer, believing, you shall receive" (Matthew 21:22).

"Therefore I say unto you, what things you so ever desire when you pray, believe that you will receive them and you shall have them" (Mark 11:24).

The impact of our collective impetuous and unrighteous actions towards our life, our government and our country has brought us where we are today. When we look around, we are besieged by illnesses, corruption, poverty and hunger. Most of the time, we feel hopeless and helpless in changing the world around us. It will only make it more real if we believe we are useless to affect a change.

Unite with us now in reaffirming that the power of united prayer knows no boundaries. HOPE springs from our prayers. Whatever we claim and believe to be so in the name of God shall be ours.

Join us in saying this prayer daily up to our "election day", preferably at 12:00 noon as we all unite in the "Prayer Power for CHANGE". Let us begin by planting the seed of hope, PRAY. Pray and see that seed grow.
