2011 SquidAngel for Weddings ~ Theme Weddings and Travel & Places ~ East Asia

Ranked #2,947 in Squidoo Community, #243,308 overall

My tour of duty as an Angel on Squidoo

SquidAngel Cynthia (also known as arncyn on Squidoo) reporting for duty!

UPDATE: (Feb.2011) I have been assigned as a Squid Angel for my third term. The first time was in January to March 2010, my second time was in November 2010. This time around I will be looking after the Weddings: Theme Weddings and Travel & Places: East Asia sections. You are very welcome to come visit my neighborhoods anytime!

What are Squidoo Angels? We are a group of volunteer lensmasters who are tasked to bless excellent lenses and ding down ones that don't meet Squidoo's standards. Thousands of lenses by veterans and Fresh Squids alike are published each day so our duty is to ensure that the quality of lenses within the Squidoo community will remain excellent and within the Terms of Service.

I am extremely honored to have been deemed worthy of angel wings and the shiny yellow badge by HQ and so I created this lens to chronicle my term as a Squidoo Angel. I was fortunate to have been blessed by a number of SquidAngels before so now, I am ecstatic to have the ability to pay it forward and give back to the community that has enriched my online life enormously.

Please read on to see what this position entails for me, what I look for before showering a lens with blessings, what lenses I consider ding-worthy and how you can get angel blessings from me and my fellow SquidAngels.

What I consider a bless-worthy lens

Lenses that rise above the rest!

Blessings from Heaven print

There will be lenses that are worth 5 STARS, but then there are lenses that simply sparkle and shine and make me go "WOW!" Blessed lenses get a little boost in Squidoo lensrank so these are the ones I will generously sprinkle my precious Squid Angel blessings on because I would like them to rank higher so they can be appreciated by more people.

Do you want to know if I will bless your lens? See my checklist first and then submit your lens for review at the Angel Blessings forum on SquidU.

What I look for in a lens before blessing it:

  • A completed lensmaster bio. There's nothing more off-putting than an empty "about me" section. I want to get to know you!

  • An informative introduction. If the intro module contains accurate information about the page's content, that's already a big plus.

  • All original content. If you do need to insert text off a reputable source, paste an excerpt AND cite where you got it, preferably along with the link to the site. We Angels have ways to tell if text has been lifted off somewhere else.

  • Creative use of modules and good overall flow of text and images. I like lenses that tell a story.

  • Modules that have been spiced up with the use of photos and videos, all properly credited. The inclusion of carefully-chosen photos and videos somehow tell me that you have enthusiasm and that you spent more time and effort in putting your lens together.

  • An earnest, passionate voice. Now this is really what separates good lenses from terrific ones. If I see how sincere and passionate you are about a topic, whether you're promoting a charity or selling a product, it will most likely get a blessing from me.

  • The presence of a guestbook and a contact me button. This tells me that you care about feedback from your audience and your peers.

What I consider a ding-worthy lens

Lenses that do not exemplify what Squidoo is all about.

Dislike shirt

While we Squidoo Angels have the power to bless worthy lenses, we also have the ability to ding the ones that don't belong down. As much as I would like to focus on the blessing aspect of this program, sometimes, we need to keep the quality within Squidoo as excellent as possible and rid our seas of lenses that will just hurt Squidoo's reputation.

What will make me ding a lens:

  • A lens on any of the topics listed on SquidDon't. In fact, I may not just ding it, if I see more lenses like it by the same lensmaster, I will have to report it. Having them around is not fair to lensmasters who put so much effort on building their lenses.

  • A lens that violates Squidoo's TOS. Again, I may not just ding it, I will have to report it.

  • A lens with content that has been copied word for word from elsewhere. I will first make sure if the original source of the text is by the same person but if it's not, I will have to ding it.

  • Any lens that contains ALL of the following: unfinished modules, an empty bio, default titles. If I see a lens with one or two unfinished modules, I will not ding it because I will assume that it's still a work-in-progress. But if it has been up for a while with no activity on it, I will have to ding it.

Do you think Squid Angels should just focus on blessing worthy lenses,

or should we also ding the ones that are ruining Squidoo's rep?

Sometimes it's best to focus on the positive side of things... but we also need to get rid of the clutter, right? What do you think?

Your thoughts on this are most welcome.

Just focus on blessing lenses and encouraging new lensmasters.

NAIZA says:

Sometimes, it's more productive to focus on the positivism rather than dinging away the unqualified ones but still it's still depend on the Squid Angel.

RinchenChodron says:

I was an Angel for 3 months and I never dinged. But I do think there is some trash out there. So I'm not sure (perhaps the higher ups should take on this one!)

KimGiancaterino says:

I focused on the positive lenses. Fortunately there are many of those!

Laniann says:

I think it is better to focus on the positive.

Heather426 says:

Mostly I think it is better to just accentuate the positive.

Ding away. Unqualified lenses don't belong in Squidoo.

jewellery-junkies says:

Ding away. Keep the content on Squidoo great - why let rogue and 'spam' lens ruin the reputation and authority of Squidoo for everyone. People take time out to work on lens, so deliberately copying content, 'spamming' and very poor quality by some is not fair

Geekgurl says:

Yeah, you should ding lenses that are making Squidoo look bad, and giving the site a "spammer" look to it.

adhd-bipolar-depression says:

Ding Ding, spam is unwanted, quality is what we need.

says:

Bless those deserving. Ding those who cheat. It's that way in life--so, why not here, too?

I do have one concern. Some lensmasters write other places online, as I do, and have published material non-exclusively. That way the material can be used in other ways, elsewhere--like here at Squidoo.

How would an angel know this before just dinging a lens? Would the angel make contact with that lensmaster before the ding? Just wondering.

kt_glasses says:

Though maybe I do not have the best lenses, I work on them with my heart.
I think Squid Angels should focus more on quality lenses so that more good lenses can get found.

Angel's Doorway by Suzanne Vega

A tribute to a real-life "angel".

Angel's Doorway, is one of my favorite songs off Suzanne Vega's 2007 album Beauty & Crime. This song was written as a tribute to a real-life "angel", Suzanne's cousin's husband, a cop named Angel Ruiz, who was stationed down at ground zero right after 9/11. Listen to a live performance below.

Hello and welcome to my first SquidAngel lens :) In early January 2010, I've had the great honor to become a Giant Squid, a SquidAngel and got my first purple star for a lens of mine. I've had a happy dance at night along with few of my fellow SquidAngels who got their new wings too. I started my jo

I love to read. Before Squidoo, my favorite way to relax was to grab a good book, something chocolate and a cup of coffee or tea.As you can well imagine, I would leave behind traces of my presence on my books. Usually a chocolate smudge or a drop of coffee would indicate that I had been there. Now, m

I came to Squidoo in September 2009, simply because a friend told me about the site. In that short time, it has been an amazing journey. After a few visits to the forums, I learned there were Squid Angels. I will never forget the first time I saw 'blessed by an angel' in the comments section of one

January 07, 2010, was a day which will always stand out in my memory: not only did I become a Squid Angel - I became a Giant Squid, too. As a result of my Giant Squidship, I hear I've become a VIP on Squidoo. Wow! Amazing but true - and I'm loving every moment of it.However, this lens will focus on

Who is SquidAngel Cynthia (arncyn),

and what is my role in Squidoo?

When I first made this lens in 2010, I was a newly-inducted Giant Squid and a highly-Squiddicted lensmaster. I am happy to say that I have since become part of the 100 Club.

I have been known as "arncyn" on most social networks for a while now and the handle is really a combination of the names of my husband (Arnold) and myself (Cynthia). If you want to learn more about me, please do visit my lensography. And if you're so inclined, you can take the quiz on myself that I made for a Potential Giants Quiz-Making Challenge.
