A Letter To My Daughter, On The Day Of Her Graduation

Today my daughter graduates from high school. This moment marks a very special time in the life of any teen. It's a transition, a moving from one stage of life, to another. As such, I'd like to celebrate this special moment for my daughter in a unique way: the creation of this page. Therefore, I'm writing this in honor and appreciation of my beautiful, talented, and very special daughter.

On this page, I'll show you some photos, share with you a little bit about my daughter, and appreciate the many blessings I've received in raising her.

By the way, there are two guestbooks on this page. The one near the top of the page is for Jessi's family and friends who would like to leave a message of congratulations for her. The second guestbook, near the bottom of the page, is for Squidoo lensmasters or others who may wish to leave a comment.

The photo above was taken of my daughter when she was about 4 years old.

Jessica, I, too, realize what a beautiful and special person you are. I have not had many opportunities to be around you, but I do remember two good times. I remember when you were about 5 or 6 years old and we were at the lake house in Gantt together. I thought you were adorable. You had to most beautiful hair and face, but even more than that you had a wonderful spirit. You were a joy to be around. A second time I remember even more clearly was March, 2009, when Marjoryn and I traveled to South Carolina to visit Rebecca and Clyde, and we were given the added bonus of a visit from you and Alex and Janice. You were not too busy to come over and hang out with your older greataunts. You entertained us with your music and your delightful conversation. I am so proud of you. I know that God has a good plan for your life and I will watch as He unfolds it for you. Study hard. Do what's right. Make your parents proud. God bless you.

Congratulations on your big day, Jessi!!! I'm so excited for you and I'm a little sad that we are all grown up now. I've been so glad to get to know you these past (is it 10?!) years and it is so amazing to get to see you graduate. I'm so happy to be your friend. =) I hope your graduation goes well and I'm going to be right there cheering for you! Love you lots!

    Jessica,
I can't believe this day is finally here. It has been so much fun watching you grow up... playing with the kids, taking care of the pets, learning to drive, sharing birthdays, swimming at the pool, shopping with the girls, etc. I loved the pictures your mom chose as it brought back so many memories. We have been neighbors for 10 years and have seen you go from a small child riding bikes with the neighborhood kids to a lovely young lady getting ready to embark in a new stage of life. We'll be praying for you as you begin to plan for your future. We love you and congratulations!!!!

Jessi, Today is a big day for you, an ending and yet a beginning. We are so proud of the young woman you've become. It seems like such a short time ago that we got the call, letting us know you were born. We always wished we lived closer so that we could have experienced more, first hand.Maybe now that you're older, you can make the trip to NY and spend more time with us. We will be thinking of you today, enjoy all the moments of this wonderful occasion. We love you and are proud to call you our niece.

We are so proud of you and wish you much happiness and success in your future! Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Go after your dreams. The only limits are ones you decide on. A Letter To My Daughter

On Graduation Day

The day I found out about you, that you would one day be a part of our family, was the day my life changed forever. Words can not describe the joy I felt! I was thrilled beyond belief!

Even before you were born, I loved you. I talked to you just as if you were already here with me, and I eagerly awaited the day when I could actually hold you in my arms.

Finally that day came!

I loved having you with me! (I still do!)

Once, when I needed to hang up some clothes, I put you in the laundry basket so you could be close to me. You seemed to like it there! You thought it was a fun game!

You were growing so fast! When you were only 4 1/2 months old, we discovered that you could stand holding on to the side of your cradle! Wow!

Before I knew it, you were cruising around the living room, from one
piece of furniture to the next!

You loved interacting with others too! You often played this game at the table. You'd tap on the table, clap your hands, turn and look behind you, or throw your hands up into the air, and expect everyone else at the table to copy you! And we did, to the best of our abilities! Whenever we messed up, you pointed at us, as if to let us know we'd made a mistake! It was so much fun! You had everyone at the table laughing and laughing!

The Day of Graduation

The more you grew, the more new interests you developed!

One of your first loves was dance. As a toddler and two year old, I'd put on some music and you'd dance all around the living room! You danced to songs like "5 Little Monkey's Jumping on the Bed" or "Bingo."

There was a song about a flower growing, and you'd get down low to the ground and pretend to be the flower growing. Yet I didn't realize how quickly you, yourself, were growing too!

Your love of dance lead to tap and ballet classes. Oh, how adorable you were!

But of course you didn't stop at dance! You developed many varied interests:

You've always been a whiz at puzzles!

Also, gymnastics, writing poetry, working on the yearbook staff, journalism, photography, other types of art, and many other things!

Let us not forget your love of animals!

You've been the primary reason we've adopted most of our pets, after all!

I have developed many interests of my own from knowing you!

I've received so many blessings from raising you! You've enriched my life in so many ways!

For example, I hardly ever sewed anything before you came into my life. Once you were born, I developed a love of sewing doll carriers, dress-up clothes (remember the wedding gown and veil, the princess clothes, and all the rest? They were so much fun to make! And even more fun to watch you wear!), hooded towels that looked like animals, a tepee, and many other things.

Tepee

One day while playing with the tepee, you wrapped up one of your dolls to be a papoose, and strapped her onto a long stick with a Y shaped fork on the end. Shortly after this photo was taken, I made you a Native American outfit to wear while playing with the tepee.

I also had such a wonderful time planning for your birthday parties! Preparing the themed activities, and making decorated cakes to match the theme was a lot of work, but I LOVED it!!

Jungle Safari Cake
Your Jungle Safari Birthday cake, when you turned 4.

Jungle Safari Party

The streamers and animals were both decoration as well as part of an activity at your Jungle Safari Party. You and the other four year olds at your party started on a "safari" outside, which continued on into the house, through the dining room, and ended in the living room. The kids walked along with homemade binoculars and safari hats, looking everywhere for animals! They kept track of the animals they spotted, and compared notes later.

You taught me about having fun with art. And dance too.

Oh, I have a story to tell you about dance! When I was pregnant with your brother, your dance teacher had to quit about a week before the recital. She called me up and asked me if I would get up on the side of the stage and do the dance routine for all the three and four year old girls to watch, as they did it themselves on the stage. I was quite pregnant at this time, and wasn't looking forward to doing this! There wasn't much of a stage, and I would have been in plain view of the audience - pregnant belly and all! But, luckily for me, and for all of the young dancers, your teacher showed up that night after all, to lead you all on!! Whew!!

I remember....

A quick glance back!

To me, our time spent together has been such a wonderful blessing!
  • Your first experience with snow. You were not even 2 years old yet. I gave you a little plastic shovel and pail to play with in the snow. You walked around to the front of the house and used the shovel to clean the snow off a small section of the top step. Then you sat down! Only...you didn't sit in the spot you'd just cleaned! You sat right beside it! :-) You didn't seem to notice though! You were just having fun being out there in all the snow!!
  • Drawing things on the driveway with you when you were very young. That was a pretty cute Easter Bunny you drew! I think you were only about two when you drew him!
  • Going camping with you when you were about six...and you drawing pictures of everything around you!
  • Taking you to the park and pushing you in the swing, or chasing you all over the playground..until it was your turn to chase me!
  • Sharing so many fun kindermusic classes with you!! We also did some fun preschool gym classes together!
  • Taking you to the library for story time. Once, we were even in the newspaper!
  • Teaching you how to read. And taking you to the library to get your first library card, as soon as you could read!
  • "Playing school" with you, almost every day after your half-day kindergarten program. You went by Kathy, remember?
  • Playing badminton in the backyard with you. And very silly games of ping pong, that were TONS of fun!!!
  • Enjoying Gatlinburg with you. And Pigeon Forge, Charleston, Virgina, Maine, Canada, Disney World, Williamsburg, Europe, and more! And countless numbers of zoos, aquariums, and campgrounds too!
  • Our yoga class together.
  • And cooking with you!
  • NOT cooking too! Remember the week long fast we did together one summer?!
  • Don't forget our fun playing pictionary...without the board!

The Blessings Of A Daughter

Simply KNOWING you, Jessi, has been such a blessing in my life!

Yes, the blessings of a daughter are many. They are comprised of the small things more so than of the big. Your smiles that light up your face.. Your hugs that warm my heart. A pretty flower you picked for me while out playing in the yard. Watching you play or learn new things. Your laughter!

Helping you shop for the prom, graduation, or just to buy a pretty dress and shoes.

Seeing you happy...that's the biggest one of all.

With all my love,

I love you, not because you are beautiful, smart, creative, and talented, but simply because you are you...my girl, my very, very dear girl.

As you graduate today, and take another step along this journey we call life, know that you have always been, and always will be, dear to my heart.

I will do my best to be here for you whenever you need me.

You will always be, my special girl.

with all my love,
Mom

About Squidoo

SquidooSquidoo

This "Blessings of a Daughter" page that I wrote in honor of my daughter's high school graduation is a Squidoo lens (a lens is a single page website). Squidoo is a company which provides free webspace for people to use to share their experiences and thoughts, sell things, post information online, create pages in honor of their new baby, share recipes, etc. The Squidoo lenses people write can be about anything they want...well, within reason, of course!  They're lots of fun to write, and hey, it's a great way to earn some money! In fact, quite a few people are using Squidoo as a part time job. Others are even making a living by writing for Squidoo!
