My Review
I was deeply curious about the emails that Frank Bailey alleged to have though and knew I would buy the book when it was eventually published.
I have to say that the emails were really just gravy. Bailey does a great job portraying Palin's thin-skinned, middle school, mean girl persona throughout the whole book. I spent much of the book wondering how someone like her could get people to constantly do her bidding (I do not find her charismatic at all).
Bailey comes across as fairly sympathetic, even though he did some pretty bad things for Palin. By the end of the book, you do get the feeling he understands those things were wrong, though I'm not sure if he had it to do over again he would not make the same mistakes. She seems to have a really powerful hold over her inner circle.
The real "hero" in this story is Bailey's wife, Neen, who put up with more than any woman should have to. I would not have been surprised to read that they were divorced by the midway point through the book and certainly not by the end, but she stuck by her man, which is commendable.
Some highlights of the book include:
* Using software to rig online polls;
* Writing fake letters to the editor;
* How much time was spent on petty, vindictive payback schemes vs. actual governing;
* A lot about Troopergate and Todd Palin's involvement;
* Illegal activity during her campaign for Governor by having contact with a 3rd party (the RGA) who was running ads.
The emails will make you shake your head in wonder that an adult, let alone an elected official actually communicates the way she does, though by now her emails have finally been released, so it's not quite as shocking.
Overall, this book confirms what anyone who has been following the Palin saga since her entrance onto the national scene in 2008 already knows, but nonetheless it's still a good, compelling read. It should be required reading for anyone that thinks she is qualified to be President of the United States

Sarah in a Nutshell:
Minor slights, many of which would have withered under their inconsequentiality, became magnified obsession that made governing the state of Alaska a lesser priority. An opponent uttering a statement Sarah regarded as an attack demanded retribution, and if possible, the destruction of that person's reputation. ~ Frank Bailey

If you buy any of the books recommended above or any of the items highlighted on this lens, this page automatically makes a donation to the incredible nonprofit, National Wildlife Federation - Alaska Regional Center, which is dedicated to Alaska conservation issues, including clean and renewable energy solutions, sustainable tourism, global warming solutions, the cultivation of youth conservation leaders, green jobs, and getting kids outdoors.Sarah Palin may not care about Alaska anymore, but over the years of reading many Alaskan blogs, I have developed a real appreciation for Alaska and it's people. I am happy to be able to donate directly to a charity that helps Alaskans through a lens about Sarah Palin. It seemed only fitting that Sarah should give back in some small way.
