A Forever Home for Blind Cats in St. Pauls, NC

Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary was founded in 2005 to answer the need for a safe place for blind cats that were deemed unadoptable by regular shelters and were going to be killed just because they are blind. In 2011, we built a second shelter to answer the need for a safe place for FEL and FIV cats that were going to be killed just because they test positive for these viruses.

Penny, pictured to the left, is both blind and deaf. Had she been taken to a traditional shelter, there is little doubt that she would have been euthanized because of her disabilities.

She was brought to us by a lady up in the mountains that had had her for a year or so. She stated that she had found her on her front porch one day, and she wouldn't leave. The lady said she was allergic to kitty litter and no longer wanted the cat. She had tried for a year or so to find a home for her and no one wanted her. Penny was very lucky that a friend of the lady knew what was going on and contacted us to take her.

Penny is a super sweet girl with a big time purr. I have never seen a cat that liked to climb as much as she does! When we look for her we know to always look up, because she will be at the top of the climber.

Someone had loved this cat at some point in her life. When the lady found her she was already spayed and declawed.

Volunteering for Blind Cat Rescue's Kitties

SnickerOur cats love volunteers and so do we! If you are in the area, give us a holler, if you would like to come visit. If you are traveling and will be passing through the area, let us know the timing of your visit to North Carolina, and we will try to accommodate your schedule.

If you live out of state and would like to help, we always need people to help with brochures, etc . Contact us, we can share some ideas with you :) Visit our contact page here to find the best ways to get in touch.

We also have Visitor Days, typically monthly, and often have special projects that require extra hands. You can find out when Visitor Days are scheduled by "liking" our Facebook page.

In the picture above is Snicker. Little Snicker came to us from the Cumberland County Animal Control Center. This pound euthanizes more than 11,000 animals per year, so you can see how lucky he is to have made it out alive. He had guardian angels that worked there that liked his friendly personality and went the extra mile to find a place for him instead of euthanizing him. He is super, super friendly.

Your Support Gives Casper a Forever Home

Casper

Casper was brought to us from a wonderful lady from New York, NY. She had adopted him and her other cats (nicknamed the "queen bees") absolutely hated this wild playful kitten. She wanted to find a cat sanctuary for him where he would be loved and taken care of. Not only did she fly personally with him to bring him to us, but she also gave us a large donation to help us build our first cat house and is sponsoring him for life.

Your sponsorships, supplies, and contributions will enable us to take in more kittens and cats like Casper and give them forever homes, too.

Animal Rescue Isn't Glamorous

MaxRescue is about comforting a scared cat whose owners abandoned him at the shelter after living together for 10 years.

It's about holding a young animal's head as they take their last breath when it has been determined that their previous owners abused them so badly that they can't be saved.

It is about restoring hope and dignity to creatures for whom no one else cares about.

We are but humble vessels to help these magnificent creatures find their forever homes. The responsibility is big, but the returns on our emotional investment are greater. You cannot place a value on the look of contentment that comes when an animal is clean, exercised, warm, fed, and safe for the first time in its life.

We will accept any cat into our sanctuary that is certified by a vet as a blind cat. Cats with 20 percent or less sight are accepted as blind. All cats must be fixed, FIV/FEL tested, and current on all shots.

As of 2011, we have a FIV/FEL building, and we will accept cats and kittens that test positive.

The gray kitty above is Max. Max was rescued from a high kill animal control facility in Texas. The group that saved his life quickly figured out that he was not only blind but seriously cognitively handicapped. What we suspect happened is he reacted to anesthesia when he was neutered and it caused his blindness and brain damage. His family no longer wanted him and dropped him off. Max is a very sweet fellow and very lucky to be alive!!

Max loves to be pet and, in a previous, life must have been a runner. He runs circles and exercises all day long! I want his energy!

Our Never-Ending Wish List

As of this writing, we are home to 77 cats. Of our residents, 55 are blind, and some of them are also deaf or brain damaged. Our new FIV/FEL building is now complete and houses 12 FEL-positive and 8 FIV-positive cats. If you would like to help the cats, below are a few things that our kitties could use. And one that you might be able to use. :)

This photo is Pooh. He's is an 8 year old beautiful chocolate point Siamese.

His owner gave him up because she had gotten in over her head "rescuing" cats. According to her husband, who brought Pooh to us, she had over 40 cats in the house, was unable to keep up with the sanitation to his standards and he had given her an ultimatum that either the cats went or she could get out and take them with her.

When he arrived her arrived sick. He had an upper respiratory infection, eye infection, and an ear infection. He had no vet records other than a combo test and rabies test from the previous owner.

Now that he's healthy, he still hates to be picked up and doesn't much care for having his nails clipped, but Pooh loves to be pet and brushed.
