My Review: Blink

Blink tackles the unbelievably fast world of the split second. Malcolm Gladwell brings his writing ability to the internal world of intuition, perception, and snap judgment. Just like his other works, you'll also find that all is not as it seems. That thoughtless act is based on something. The expert notices something without realizing what. The best snap judgment requires you to slow down. Things may happen in the blink of an eye, but you can influence what happens before that. The answer is really in the beginning.

A Closer Look at Blink

In Blink, Malcolm Gladwell seeks to uncover what happens during "the first 2 seconds" of anything. It's that twilight zone of time where we are made aware of something but our rational mind has not kicked in yet. This is the realm of the snap judgment, of rapid cognition.

Gladwell notes several things come into play at this time. Describing all the phenomena is the meat of the book. We can gain great insight by Thin Slicing. We can get amazing results by diminishing irrelevant data. There are instances when the internal computer can preform astounding feats of comprehension.

Interspersed with this Gladwell provides cautionary evidence of how we can be led astray. Priming can actually cause people to behave differently. Statistics won't provide the best answer if the instrument isn't asking the right question. Adrenalin and other stress chemicals in the body will turn normally rational men into savages.

Working with 2 second Blinks

... oh and by the way...

One of the chief complaints about Blink is that Gladwell tells you how things can sour in the first two seconds yet he fails to tell you how to mitigate it. Critics ask for a solution and say it's been left out.

That's not exactly true. Gladwell says be mindful of the moment. The solution is on page 17 of the paperback's introduction, in short it's in the beginning of the book.
