Blizzard Authenticator - Protect Your WoW Account

There are millions of players worldwide who play Blizzard's World of Warcraft. To better protect its players from keyloggers, phishers, and other thieves eager to steal accounts, they developed the Blizzard Authenticator.

This little device, which is about the size of two AA batteries, can attach to your keychain, and once synced up with your account on the Blizzard World of Warcraft site, adds an additional security step to your login.

The authenticator generates a different 6 digit number every time you log in, making your account better protected if someone else has only your login info.

Learn more about the authenticator, how to set it up and where to get one for your WoW account.

Note: Apparently the Authenticator is only available for accounts in the western hemisphere. I'll update if they extend the offer to European and Asian accounts.

Getting the Authenticator Pack

When you order an Authenticator, you receive the unit in a little box and a card that gives you websites that allows you to sync up the unit and ask questions if you can't get it to work (syncing is easy).

Order the Authenticator in the U.S.

An Added Bonus - The Core Hound Pup

Of course, the Blizzard Authenticator will help keep your WoW account secure, but there's an added bonus. When you setup your authenticator and attach it to your account, you will receive a two-headed Core Hound Pup in the in-game mail. How cool is that?

The Core Hound Pup is a mini pet that you can release like any other mini pet. He (it?) will play games when he feels like it (about as often as other mini pets).

The Core Hound Pup, your reward for buying a Blizzard Authenticator, will stand up and beg, dig up a bone, howl at the moon and roll over.

Isn't he infernally cute?

Blizzard Authenticators on eBay

Due to high demand, Blizzard is often out of these little gadgets. Part of the problem is people buy them in bulk to sell elsewhere.

Where do they end up? eBay of course!

Buying an Authenticator from a third party does not reduce its security. Each authenticator has a serial number on the back which is used to sync up when you set it up on Blizzard's site.

The Authenticator is self-reliant though, and only generates a number when you press the button on its face, so even from a third-party purchase, even if the seller has the serial number, they can't break into your account unless they have the actual device in their hand to see the number it generates when you log in.

If Blizzard doesn't have Authenticators available, eBay is a good way to pick one up, but you will pay a premium for it.

It's Great - My Account is Secure

I Don't Need It - Don't Give Out Your Info and You're Fine

Tenerion says:

The Blizzard Authenticator is a serious waste of cash. Within 24 hours of obtaining my Authenticator (after a month of waiting!) I was hacked and my account suspended. This does NOTHING to help your account - It just slows down login time and gives Blizzard another £6.
