Blizzard Entertainment was founded in 1991, and was called Silicone and Synapse. The early years were good for Blizzard, and by 1994 they'd been acquired by Davidson and Assoc. for $10M.
However, the company changed hands half a dozen time before settling down at Vivendi in 1998. The company has 250 employees, all of who are avid gamers, and is located in Irvine, CA.
Blizzard's AntiPiracy Efforts
Blizzard has agressively squashed any efforts by opensource organizations to make offshoots of their games for free. Some have reverse engineered Blizzard code to prevent the use of Blizzard servers, others use similar names and similar characters, but no Blizzard code. The Blizzard 'root kit' even got some press in 2005 as people began to realize that Blizzard could see more than just your game playing habits with the use of their 'spyware-ish' software.
Is it too much?
