Newbie to Blog Success in 18 months

Rusty Moore joined Jack Humphrey's Blog Success training Program 18 months ago today (7 December 2008). He started out as a Newbie who knew nothing about blogging and didn't know how to upload images. Within 4 months he was receiving 500 visitors per day to his blog. He now averages 3,000 visitors per day. Rusty gets 70-80 comments on each blog post and has attracted 1,100 comments on a single post.

Rusty's Secrets to Blog Success

Underlying Rusty's Blog Success was a basic success formula that enabled him to attract huge traffic to his blog.

His blog success secrets can be summarized as follows:

1. create content that people value

2. Engage people in conversation

3. know your niche thoroughly (or rapidly acquire the knowledge)

4. write about what people in your niche are concerned about.

These four principles underpin Jack Humphrey's Blog Success Training Program.

They are also consistent with Seth Godin's "Permission Marketing" approach and are the foundation for creating an authority site on Squidoo as well as on a WordPress Blog.

Blog Success Secret (1) - Dare to be different!

In his book, the Purple Cow, Seth Godin challenges us to be remarkable and to stand out from the crowd - to dare to be different.

The Squidoo lenses that attract people are those that offer something different from the average lens.

Rusty Moore realized early on that fitness blogs tended to be "bland and technical" - they were boring! He resolved to take a different approach. Rusty wanted to develop a blog that was nice to look at but also had interesting, different content.

He dared to be different...and developed a huge following and massive daily traffic.

Blog Success Secret (2) - Create your own personality online

Rusty emphasizes the need to "have your own voice", to be your own person online.

If you create your own unique personality online, you will develop a following. You will have a strong readership that keeps coming back for more. Being real and true to yourself is a key blogging success secret.

Developing your online personality is the foundation for a quality authority site, whether you are developing it on a WordPress Blog or on Squidoo.

Blog Success Secret (3) - Give before you get

Rusty makes the point that he "just wanted to help people". He wanted to give people more than just "laundry lists".

He focused on knowing his niche and meeting people's needs first. It was only later that he started to monetize his blog.

You can immediately tell when you are reading a newbies' blog, Squidoo lens or email. They tend to use "push marketing" - lots of banners and hard sell.

Rusty realized early on that blog success today comes from a "pull marketing" approach - meet my needs and you can influence my (buying) behavior.

So a success secret for blogging and Squidoo is "give before you get".

Jack Humphrey teaches you how to implement this secret in his Blog Success Program.

Blog Success Secret (4) - Engage your readership

If you are an engaging blogger, through your differentiation, personality and generosity, your readership will want to engage with you. If you focus on giving and helping people with their questions, they will keep coming back to you.

Rusty is able to average 70-80 comments per blog post and has reached as high as 1,100 comments on a single post.

Engagement strategies enable you to demonstrate that you are real and genuine with the reader's interests at heart.

Blog Success Secret (5) - Leverage your blog success

Once you have established your authority site status, you have a powerful foundation for leverage.

Rusty stated, for example, that the very people in the fitness niche that he set out to emulate are now JV partners. He attributes this to the quality of his blog content and his success in positioning himself within this competitive niche.

What he set out to do was to identify and meet specific niche needs better than anyone else. This is the fundamental principle of the boutique hotel or boutique dress shop.

Once Google starts to respect your site and you have developed what Rusty calls, "Google Power", you can start targeting other long tail keywords.

For example, Rusty developed a small website which he attached to his main domain and within a week it was on page 1 of Google for the targeted keyword. This one small website generates $300 per month by itself.

The same approach applies to a Squidoo authority site:
1. establish your authority site for a targeted niche by providing up-to-date, relevant content that your readers value

2. Build your Google rank and your lens rank

3. Leverage off your main lens by creating related lenses.

Rusty indicated in his audio interview that because of his blog's leverage, he can do whatever he wants. He can rank on page 1 of Google for any keyword relevant to his authority site. This in turn generates a new revenue stream for him. You can learn how to leverage your authority site through the Blog Success Training Program.

Blog Success Secret (6) - Join a membership site with a Mastermind Group

Rusty attributes a lot of his success to the Blog Success Mastermind Group.

His strategy in using the Mastermind Group was to pick someone who was a few steps ahead of where he was at in terms of blogging success and try to learn from that person until he reached their level. He did not try to reach Jack Humphrey's level at the beginning.

Once Rusty reached his chosen "mentor's" level, he selected another person and aimed for their level.

He was able to gradually build his knowledge, blogging competence and level of achievement through the Mastermind Group and the Blog Success resources.

The same forum, Mastermind Group and comprehensive library of videos, e-books, reports and audios are now available through the new Blog Success Training Program.

Blog Success Secret (7) - Choose a competitive niche with high traffic

Rusty was not put off by the fact that the fitness niche was highly competitive.

He knew that there were a lot of competitors in the niche but he also knew that most were not prepared to put in the hard yards. Most online marketers lack focus, jump onto the latest fad and fail to build any depth to their offering.

Rusty's advice is to stay focused on your niche and stick with a plan even when it is boring, monotonous and routine - most competitors will not stick with you.

If you combine this focus and persistence with Blog Success Secret 1, you will stand out from the crowd and grab a huge share of the niche traffic and income.

Blog Success - income, profile, status and satisfaction

Rusty assures you that it is well worth the effort. He earns a substantial income and can easily add more income streams. He estimates that after 18 months, he would want somewhere between $300,000 and $500,000 for his blog.

Rusty noted that it cost him about $1,800 in membership fees and a few hundred dollars to get some articles re-written. Through his membership of Blog Success, he now has a very substantial asset in the form of his blog, together with his multiple income streams. It is a gross understatement to say that he thinks the effort and monthly outlay were "completely worth it".

So much to learn. When I started my blogs, I had no idea they might produce income in themselves. I started them to direct traffic to my selling site. I joined my first affiliate program in Feb. and although I'm not breaking even on it yet, I think I will start showing a profit before the end of the year. Unfortunately, that one had a set-up fee. It does provide what my niche market wants, however. Now I'm getting my feet wet with Clickbank and also looking into other affiliate programs.
