What will your next plot of Virtual Real Estate be?

You are about to create a new plot of virtual real estate... and you are wondering whether you should create a blog or a website?

Well, the answer is probably "Both!"

But they do have differences, and one will have advantages over the other depending on what you want your new site to accomplish.

Pssst...

If you're looking for a blog maker, check out YourNicheBlog.com. Customized to your topic, and it will promote itself..

A comparison:

A blog is generally used more as a timeline. A journey along a road. You make posts as you go, adding to the collection of posts like you would a diary, slowly building the word count. It is constantly changing and growing and adapting, and your readers join you for the ride.

A website on the other hand is a different beast entirely. Whereas a blog is a journey along a road, your website is the destination. Your website is mostly static. You don't update it as much as your blog either. It generally isn't slow to grow, and you will want to start with all the webpages you will need. Not add them like posts one by one.

"I am looking at getting a blog, and..."

Blog/Website - it all depends on YOU!

Essentially a blog is a website which is constantly being added to. Like a diary about a certain topic. In this way, you gain readers. You gain fans. You gain a large audience of target-customers who wait for your latest blog post every day or week.

So whether you choose a blog or a website right now depends on where you are in your online adventure. Do you need a destination (website or affiliate product) or do you need a way to generate visitors to send to your existing website?

Making Your Decision...

Blog Website Blog Website Blog Website - it's all so confusing!

A lot of people want to make money online but don't have the technical brains to build themselves a great looking blog.

So what they do is register a basic free blog, or use a service like YourNicheBlog.com and have a blogger LIKE ME create them a great blog full of features.

Whether you go the DIY route, or get a pro, you must remember the difference between a blog and a website. If you start to treat one like the other your website visitors may wonder why pages are always vanishing/moving/empty and why no section of your site seems finished, and your blog visitors may wonder why you don't post updates anymore.

Whether you get a new blog or a new website, just make sure you do something for it today!

Life rewards those who take decisive action :)

Going for both is hands down the best choice. You can promote a lot of your other websites from your blog since blogs are less niche-specific.

I would opt to use blog over website. Google like blogs because they assume content will be added so they will crawl more (of course, if you do not continue to add content they will stop visiting). It usually takes longer to get a website crawled.

Yes, you should definitely [not definately ;)] start a blog and a website and a lens or two or three! Cool idea my dear -- oh and I sure hope you are returning SOON to the U.K. -- if you saw, we've added more lensmasters to the journal of the traveling squid and it should still be in the U.K. upon your return! ;)

Thanks Lewis. I have both....but admit...get myself confused as to what to do next. I am trying to develop my Web site into a marketing site using affiliate marketing. Find myself a little overwhelmed. I work outside of my home and am trying to develop my site on a part-time basis (as I have energy and time). Sometimes I find it hard to think of what to blog about, besides Squidoo. How do you fellow squids stay focused? Good job Lewis...Thanks.

This is an important subject. I have had both websites and blogs. Here are my experiences on the differences. I would love to see a discuss of the following points to see if others agree or disagree and why. Maybe I am missing something:

Blogs seem to get search traffic for a new subject much quicker than websites
Blogs require constant updating, both in order to maintain traffic and to not appear to be outdated.
Website generate more money from Google adsense than blogs.

Do other people have the same experiences?

Interesting distinction between blogs and websites. Some folks out there have suggested that one should start a blog regardless, because the tags and other features that are unique to blogs will get them spidered more frequently and you'll get more traffic.

NIce lens, 5*. And that computer screen covered in Post-It notes looks EXACTLY like mine :-)
