Blogging
Blogging has become such an ubiquitous activity that it seems that you cannot get on the Internet without running into one or two blogs. In spite of the many positive aspects that blogging has brought upon us, it has also serve to highlight the fact that so many bloggers appear to have disregarded common blogging etiquette in the pursuit of higher readership. If you have been a frequent observer of the blogging phenomenon for a number of years now, then you probably know what we are talking about. Blogging is as much a privilege as it is a right, and it will only serve the blogging community as a whole if everyone keeps a few simple things in mind.
On the part of the blogger, it is important to bear in mind that you are essentially writing for a global audience. While the personal approach remains a valid means of expression, the modern day blogger should at least make an effort to be understood by a wider range of readers.
Blogging was originally used as a way for people to get their thoughts out on the Internet regardless of how trivial or insignificant they may seem to be. There is certainly nothing stopping you from doing the same today if you wish, although you can hardly expect everyone who comes across your blog to be interested in the minutiae of your day to day life. Instead of merely posting about your day to day activities, it may better serve your blog to write on a certain theme or subject.
A good blog is always written by someone who knows what he is talking about. You will greatly increase the chances of your blog's success if the subject that you are writing about is something that you are passionate about or at least have some degree of familiarity in. While no one is expecting you to know every single thing there is to know about your chosen niche, you should at the very least be in possession of a bit more knowledge and/or experience than the majority of your readers. Keep in mind that your readers will gradually come to depend on your blog as a source of information that they cannot get anywhere else, and being knowledgeable in your niche would ensure your reputation as a person of authority.
Under no circumstances should you steal content from other websites. If you have nothing at all to write on your blog, resist the urge to lift content from other blogs. Keep the golden rule in mind, and don't rip off content if you don't want other people ripping off content from you!
Lastly, do not take advantage of your anonymity on the Internet. Even if you are writing under a pseudonym, there is a possibility that your blog will be traced back to you someday. It is therefore important to make sure that you do not engage in any online behavior that is at odds with your actions in the real world.
