- Things have changed in the art world: I believe that curators increasingly expect to be able to find information about artists online.
By being visible online (under your professional name, of course), you allow other people to do your promotion for you. This works largely through the medium of blogging, although occasionally artists are picked up by the larger mainstream media because a story about them has appeared online. - 9 Reasons Why Every Artist Should Have Their Own Art Blog

...to get more "Google Juice", I thought I'd try blogging. So yes, dear reader, I first started my blog for the money. In the end, I do (over a year later now) for the passion. The fact is, in order to write something worth reading nearly daily, you have to have the passion. Sure, there are bloggers who write daily for the money (they used to call them journalists), but that's not my story. If you're a lurker and considering blogging, consider this........ - Kirsty Hall - Why Artists Should Blog

- Making a Mark: How to improve your art blog
- A year ago I wrote a couple of posts about why artists should blog. A year later this post is about how to improve your art blog.
Recently I gave some advice to a successful artist who wanted to use her blog as part of her marketing of her art but wondered why she wasn't getting much of an audience for her blog. For those of you who would also like to improve your blog profile and traffic and/or use it to market your art, you'll find that this post develops the themes in some of the advice I offered. Some of my advice comes from having managed a major marketing operation in the past and the rest comes from having blogged most days for the last 20 months!

One of the questions which perplexes me is whether or not a case can be made for using advertising on an artist's blog or website. However when it comes to lessons to be learned from advertising about design effectiveness I'm not in the least bit confused. The answer is clear - there's lots to learn and use - whether or not you use adverts!

POLL: How often do you post to your blog?
This poll is to give new bloggers an idea about how often people post. There's a huge variation amongst art blogs - and there is no right answer - it's whatever works for you.
So - excluding your normal breaks/holidays - how often do YOU post to your blog?
Bear in mind that virtually all blogs (on whatever subject) "die" in the first three months of life - and if you've not posted in the last three months your blog is almost certainly dead.

Blogging and a painting a day
- Making a Mark: Will you be a success if you blog your paintings daily?
- Yet more coverage yesterday for blogs which feature "a painting a day". This is the link to the New York Times article "Everyday scenes painted every day" in the New York Times on 31st August.
This time the reporter from the New York Times is asking "Will the painting-a-day frenzy last? Or is it merely the fleeting symptom of a new Internet trend?"
Read on..... - Making a Mark: Daily painters, paintings and paintworks - and where you can see them
- The daily painting movement has seen more than a few sites come and go in the last 18 months or so - but I was extremely pleased yesterday to see the announcement of a new site - Daily Paintworks. This new site includes some of my favourite female artists who paint every day - Karin Jurick, Carol Marine, Sarah Wimperis and Belinda del Pesco - as well as a number of other names who will be well known to the daily painting fraternity.
For today's post, I've decided to place this new site in the context of all the other daily painting sites that I know of and to check out the current state of play as we near the end of 2007. - Making a Mark: The "stickability' factor
- Yesterday, in my post "Will you be a success if you blog your paintings daily?" I suggested a number of factors which I think help artists to sell their work on-line - independently of 0n-line galleries or auction type websites.
Today, I want to emphasise one more factor - the "stickability" factor.
The reason for emphasising it is I think maybe too little attention has been paid to the fact that a lot of the people who are now enjoying success with sales associated with their daily painting blogs - or other art projects - didn't necessarily achieve success straight away. - Problogger: Blogging vs Social Networking
- People debate the value of different social media channels for promoting their art - particularly daily paintings.
Blogging vs Social Networking - here's Darren Rowse's take on what other people are saying about the pros and cons of blogging and social networking and the future of both
Different perspectives on "Must Read" Art Blogs
- 8 Must-read Art Blogs for 2008 - a Few of the Best Art Blogs Online
- As an art blogger myself, I read a lot of art blogs. I've found some good ones and some great ones - but going into 2008, I wanted to pick out the cream of the crop: the very best art blogs online.
- Must Read Blogs « Kirsty Hall
- ....there are loads of other wonderful art blogs that I read as well but these 8 very different blogs are the ones that I absolutely wouldn't be without. My criteria: blogs that are updated on a regular basis and inspire me either visually, intellectually or preferably both.
What's this 'long tail' and why is it relevant to selling art?
Essentially - for artists - it boils down to how the internet is structuring demand and supply.
Knowing what is happening in other markets can can be helpful to how you use your blog in relation to other distribution channels for art with many items and 'clout' - such as e-bay, etsy and other online gallery sites or community listings
- The Long Tail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- The phrase The Long Tail (as a proper noun with capitalized letters) was first coined by Chris Anderson in an October 2004 Wired magazine article[1] to describe certain business and economic models such as Amazon.com or Netflix. Businesses with distribution power can sell a greater volume of otherwise hard-to-find items at small volumes than of popular items at large volumes.
Beginning in a series of speeches in early 2004 and culminating with the publication of a Wired magazine article in October 2004, Anderson described the effects of the long tail on current and future business models. Anderson later extended it into the book The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More (2006).
Anderson argued that products that are in low demand or have low sales volume can collectively make up a market share that rivals or exceeds the relatively few current bestsellers and blockbusters, if the store or distribution channel is large enough. - Wired 12.10: "The Long Tail" by Chris Anderson
- This is the original blog post about The Long Tail - subsequently turned into a book. It relates to completely different areas of business (notably the music business) but essentially is about why the future is about selling less to more.
"Forget squeezing millions from a few megahits at the top of the charts. The future of entertainment is in the millions of niche markets at the shallow end of the bitstream."
So why's that relevant to artists? Everybody has a market - you just need to find it and find out how to tap into it. Read this to understand how some of the mechanics work. - "The Long Tail" Blog

- "Having been the target of copyright thieves, and working with writers, authors, and photographers on copyright protection and laws for over 25 years, I thought I'd talk a little about what to do when someone steals your content.
First, you noticed that I didn't say "if" someone steals your content. That was on purpose. With the glut of information on the Internet, it's now a matter of "when" not "if".
The first step in learning about what you can do when someone steals your content is to know that it will happen, so the more prepared and informed you are, the better your chances of prevention and having a plan in place when they steal." When it comes to content theft, there is a great deal of confusion.

This confusion has given rise to a series of myths and misunderstandings about content theft, many of which have very negative implications for Webmasters concerned with the rising tide of scraping and plagiarism. - Making a Mark: Blogging - an update on rights, liabilities and spam attacks

The title of your next post is the main factor that people use to determine whether they'll read your next post. This is true in most places that people are going to stumble upon your post whether it be on a search engine, in an RSS feed, on a social media site, in a link from another blog etc.

Tips: Titles, Links, Labels and Archives
How to help people find your blog posts
Past blog posts can be very valuable in terms of generating traffic to your blog. I have people who regularly visits blog posts which are three and four years old. However for people to visit they first need to be able to find the blog post. It's much easier to find a post if:
* You've given it a Title containing relevant keywords
* The first couple of sentences - which may well be used by google - are very much on topic
* You link to a blog post if writing about the same or a related topic on a subsequent occasion
* You label the post with relevant tags
* You archive the post so it is accessible

Tips: SEO and Keywords
Creating a website or blog is only the beginning. Many artists then want to know how to help people find the art on their website or blog.
SEO, or "search engine optimization" and keywords are both concepts which you don't need to know about to get a blog up and running. However it can really help your profile if you learn a little and help your blog through taking a few simple steps.
All that SEO does is make sure that the right sort of people arrive at your website - whether they stay or not is entirely due to the content you've created. If it's good they'll probably stay and take a long look round.

POLL: On average how many page views do you receive per month?
Pageviews reflects the number of times a unique post on your blog has been visited.
So the number of pageviews for a post is the number of times a reader looks at that blog post while it shows its unique URL in the address bar or clicks on a link and jumps to that page
Reading all the posts visible on your blog doesn't count. If there are five posts visible on your blog's URL and people read five posts that doesn't count as five page views - that counts as one page view.
Knowing the number of pageviews a blog post gets tells you about the popularity of different topics.
When looked at in overview, an analysis of pageviews for different posts tells you in general terms the most popular reasons why people visit your blog
POLL: On average how many unique visitors does your blog get each month?
The number of UNIQUE visitors is calculated using the cookie that your blog lodges with your visitor. It's calculated based on the total of the RETURNING visitors and FIRST TIME visitors - all your visitors.
Different statistical software counts a return visit in different ways.
RETURNING: For example, Statcounter counts a person is returning to your website for another visit an hour or more later if they left after the first visit. Others will not count visitors again until the next day.
FIRST TIME Visitors are those people who have never visited your blog before - based purely on a cookie.
The number of unique visitors is important as this is a parameter used by others to rank your blog against other blogs. If you care about such things you might want to look a bit more closely at how visitors behave and how they get counted.
