I have several blogs. For my selfhosted blog (that is a blog with my own domainname) I use wordpress.

However you can (and probably should) setup a free blog first. There are various reasons to start out with a free blog.

  • Free blogs usually come with their own community. For instance if you start a blog at squidtop, you automatically connect with the community of squidoo bloggers that are also active on squidtop.

  • Free blogs are a great way to find out if you actually have what it takes to become a serious blogger. Do you have a tendency to keep writing, or does the writing juice dry out after three posts? Do your posts get comments from other readers? Or is all you end up doing talking to yourself? One reason why I did end up buying a second domain name and start my own blog there is that I found out that I do keep on writing. I do keep on having something to say. But that's not true for everyone and since it does cost money to setup a host (even if it's not a lot), it's better to test the waters first.

  • You should have a blog at the free hosts anyhow - to make sure your name is not going to be abused by others later on in the game to get famous :) Seriously: just to be safe - if your online life is strong, get your subdomain registered.

Once your blog has an audience, you can start putting up ads on there, so you can earn some income off it. Depending on the subject the money will be slim or big - but the key here is audience. Only if there is an audience will you make money with adsense.
