Instead of Blogging, try writing on Squidoo

Blogging is a popular way to earn money, get writing practice and spread the word about a cause or belief. But, a blog can be a difficult thing to set up, run, and keep updated constantly. An easier way to 'blog'(write, make money, etc.) is to use Squidoo.

How? The main premise is for every topic or idea that you want to write about, that you would normally devote separate blog entries to, you instead create a Squidoo 'Lens' for it. A Lens is a mini web page, but it is much easier to use than a website or a blog. You can write your basic idea, complete with special modules for videos and other content, and then update it with new information easily, or you could even remake the whole lens, not something you can do with a regular blog.

This is a collection of ideas for 'blog entries'(Lenses), plus ways to use different Lens modules to expand on your content and make money.

Why Do People Blog?

And how to turn that into a Lens

If you are a little uncertain about what the benefits of a blog are(and how you can translate those benefits into a Squidoo Lens) here they are:
  • Enrich your client's understanding of your business- You can create lenses that focus on a specific product, service, employee, even just a general overview of your business, and that will help your clients to further understand what you do and why they should buy from you.
  • Reach out to your customers- Lenses have so many modules that can create interaction with your customers or anyone who visits your lens: polls, debates, and many options to comment on various parts of you lens.
  • Build a buzz- You can create your lens to highlight anything you want for your business, with lots of ways to display images, videos, links, etc.
  • Test drive new ideas- With all the various modules that can help you to display your new ideas, and then the many different ways for readers to interact and give you their opinion, a lens is the perfect way to see if people like your plans
  • Create a backdoor to the Press- Lenses get just as well a Google ranking as blogs do(as long as you update enough) that it can be really easy for the Press to learn about your company and start talking about.
  • Write your book- Because of the ease of updating a lens, you can try out ideas, get feedback on characters, display pictures of possible settings, and overall write at least an outline of your book on a Squidoo Lens, and get people talking about it sooner. Once you actually write your book, you can create an entire lens all about your book, and possibly use it to attract a publisher.

Lenses about different topics

The Basic Idea

First, make a list of possible topics/items/etc that you would like to write about on a blog. Take that list and break it down into more specific areas: if you want to write about books, make a lens featuring your favorite book of the week or a selection of various books by one author and why you like that author. it helps if you go on a blog that you admire and look at their topics list and then make up your own ideas for them.

If you want teach how-to topics, you can easily make a lens about that (I have focused mine on writing, but you can really go crazy with how-tos on here)

If you just want a venue to be able to write about random topics or to rant, hey, I have you covered with my own example, detailing my random thoughts on, well, anything that pops in my head.

Remember, lenses can be updated as constantly as blogs, and are much easier to do so(no knowledge of HTML required).

A Book a Week

If I had a blog, each week I would highlight a different book that I was reading during the week. With Squidoo, I can easily update my lens about my book list with just a couple clicks. You can do this with any weekly or daily update: A word of the day, food of the week, philosophy of the month. One woman updates her lens about Writing Prompts each day, week and month. People love that lens because she updates so often. Plus, Search Engines love websites, blogs or lenses that are updated frequently and keep feeding them new stuff.

A Main, Updated Feature

I actually, when I had a blog, wrote some stuff about writing schedules. Part of this lens mentions things that I did when I had a blog. By creating a lens, I can update and adjust this lens as I change my schedules, or I can just leave things as they are for others to use. With a blog, the only way you can get rid of things that no longer apply would be to delete them, losing any Search Engine love that it may have acquired. With Squidoo, you can just change, rearrange and delete things on your lens without lowering or getting rid of any Search Engine rankings it has developed.

Make Small Updates

On this lens, I usually come across new ideas or links to share about Fan Fiction. What I love about Squidoo is I can add small updates(a new website, term or a fixed typo) without having to find, if it were a blog, that blog post written a year ago that is not as popular before, without having to write a whole new post and hope that people will see it at the top of the blog. I am constantly updating my lenses with new bits of information, so to be able to do it easily is key.

A Series Lens

If I had a blog, I would have done this lens as a series of posts about my favorite nonfiction authors. However, I would have had to do it within a close amount of time or people would be confused by having a Top Ten list that is months apart. With Squidoo, I was able to update and write about each author as I went, as every added author upped my lensrank a little each time(mostly just from the fact that I was updating and adding better tags).
