Blood Diamond

Set against the backdrop of civil war and chaos in 1990's Sierra Leone, Blood Diamond is the story of Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) - a South African mercenary - and Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) - a Mende fisherman. Both men are African, but their histories as different as any can be, until their fates become joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond that can transform their lives. While in prison for smuggling, Archer learns that Solomon - who was taken from his family and forced to work in the diamond fields - has found and hidden the extraordinary rough stone. With the help of Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly), an American journalist whose idealism is tempered by a deepening connection with Archer, the two men embark on a trek through rebel territory, a journey that could save Solomon's family and give Archer the second chance he thought he would never have.

Why I love Blood Diamond?

What make this movie so memorable to me was how it seamlessly woven an intricate web of suspense, love, comraderie and hate so powerful, it drove the message across loud and clear. With a deep political undertone, Leonardo portrays the role of an ex-soldier deeply rooted in the bloody trade in Africa to such perfection, complete with the right slanged English and healthy looking tan... it is little wonder how he was nominated for the Annual Golden Globe Award 2007 under the category "Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama"

Leonardo di Caprio as Danny Archer

Archer, who has made his living trading diamonds for arms, learns of a hidden rare stone (see below) while in prison for smuggling. He knows a diamond like this is a once-in-a-lifetime find-valuable enough to be his ticket out of Africa and away from the cycle of violence and corruption in which he has been a willing player.

Information on blood diamond from Wikipedia
A blood diamond (also called a conflict diamond or a war diamond) is a diamond mined in a war zone and sold, usually clandestinely, in order to finance an insurgent or invading army's war efforts.
Stop Blood Diamonds!
"Stop Blood Diamonds" is an organization pledged to stopping the exploitation of the diamond trade by human rights abusers. Blood diamonds, often called conflict diamonds, are mined in war torn African countries by rebels to fund their conflict. The rebels grossly abuse human rights, often murdering and enslaving the local populations to mine the diamonds.
Kimberley Process Certification Scheme
The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) is a process designed to certify the origin of diamonds from sources which are free of conflict. The process was established in 2002 to prevent rebel groups and their rivals from financing their war aims from diamond sales. The certification scheme aims at preventing these "conflict diamonds" (also known as "blood diamonds") from entering the mainstream rough diamond market. It was set up to try to assure consumers that by purchasing diamonds they were not financing war and human rights abuses.
United Nations - Blood Diamond
"Diamonds are forever" it is often said. But lives are not. We must spare people the ordeal of war, mutilations and death for the sake of conflict diamonds.
Global Policy Forum on Blood Diamond
This website looks at how the mining and trade of diamonds fuels deadly conflicts. Since the early years of the 20th century, when Cecil Rhodes sowed tribal strife in South Africa to gain control of rich diamond deposits, diamonds have often been associated with violence and misery - the very opposite of the advertising images of diamonds as symbols of joy and love. The connection between diamonds and conflicts goes far beyond rebel groups seizing control of diamond-rich areas and selling the precious gems for arms and war supplies.

Buying diamonds?

Make sure your jeweler stops the blood diamonds trade by supporting conflict free diamonds. We can stop the blood diamond situation in Africa by purchasing legitimate diamonds. Botswana used to be a poor farm country but today its government works hand in hand with the Diamond industry to give Botswana a living standard 7 times higher than its neighbors.
