The Legend of Bloody Mary

"Bloody Mary" the legend is actually based on two historic personages. Mary I, Queen of England (the real "Bloody Mary") and Countess Elizabeth Bathroy, the Hungarian who was rumored to have bathed in the blood of young, virgin women to retain her beauty.

Often times, Mary's sobriquet and reputation are combined with Countess Bathory's nefarious deeds.

As far as the legend in the bathroom goes... it's a joke played amongst friends. A friend who has NEVER summoned Bloody Mary goes into the water closet/bathroom.... alone... while friends outside the door make noises and possibly lights appear in the room and scare the person inside the water closet/bathroom.

What the person IN the bathroom sees in the mirror is a product of imagination (fueled by adrenaline and friends outside) and your vision as it adjusts for the utter darkness in the room. The actual spectre does not exist.

Who Was Bloody Mary?

by "mae413"

Bloody Mary was Mary Tudor, Queen of England, and daughter of King Henry the 8th and Catherine of Aragon. All her life, she was a mean brat to her little sister, Elizabeth and her brother Edward VI. She did not like them at all and was very jealous.

When Edward VI died, she became Queen Mary of England. She was hated all over for changing the religion in England from Protestant to Roman Catholic. She mass-murdered over 100 Protestant leaders, earning her name as "Bloody Mary".

Do You Know The Story Of Bloody Mary?

Do you know the story of Bloody Mary? That is if you look into the mirror and say Bloody Mary 10 times she will appear behind you. Well, me and my best friend decided to try that one day. Nobody was home at her house so we went to her house and went into her bathroom and turned the lights off. We had decided earlier that we would say Bloody Mary 20 times; she would say Bloody Mary 10 times and I would say Bloody Mary 10 times.

So my friend said it 10 times and when it was my turn I couldn't speak, I was too busy staring at the green light forming behind me. I got more scared every second. I looked behind me to see if there was a night light in, but when I turned around, there was nothing there. I rushed for the door and tried to open it, but it was locked. I shouted at my friend why she locked it, and she told me she didn't. We burst out of the bathroom and outside.

I told her what I saw, and after that, we never tried anything like that again and I recommend that you never try it. We also figured out that if we do that, we are letting demons into her house, inviting in the devil.

Bloody Mary?

I was 9 I remember like it was yesterday. It was a cold morning in fall I was playing outside having so much fun with my friends next door Kayla and Briana. But then my mom called me inside she said to get ready we have to go to a funeral. I said who who's funeral. My mom said Gigi my great grandmother... no I thought no, no, no. I had been close to her, she picked flowers with me at one point she had lived with me so on and so on.

I got dressed I had on a black dress and black sandals. While we were in the car I asked how did she die mom. She died of leukemia a type of cancer. Why did you not tell me, why did you keep that from why why? She said it was best for me. She said it was best for me not to know. But I said no no it wasn't I should have known look at me now I'm so sad I wouldn't of been this sad if you would have told me.

That's when I heard a voice not my moms a distant voice very distant I could hardly understand. But what I did get was this Mary, Mary,Mary. That is my name Mary. This I knew was the second encounter with a ghost.

Well I got through the funeral it was hard but I did. When we got back home it was time to eat dinner and go to bed. But I couldn't sleep that night right now it was 11:00. I got up to go get some water. But then when I was getting in the bed I had to go to the bathroom so I went and when I was washing my hands I looked at the mirror and I remembered the story Briana had told me `BLOODY MARY'. I lit a candle that was in the bathroom only one candle that's all the light I had. Then I said Bloody Mary 13 times and spun around 3 times. I bet you don't believe me but it happened trust me it happened she came out of the mirror. I saw her she looked scary but she was nice she said I called out her name in the car I love the name Mary so I will not hurt you.

When I was little I had hated the name Mary but for the first time I loved it more then... well pretty much anything (and I loved my mom and my dad for naming me that).

Bloody Mary at our School

At our school there has always been a room that there is a spirit what haunts our toilets it is known by bloody Mary. It is said that she was a school girl using the toilets when she tripped and smashed her head on the mirror and died. She always used the end toilet.

Me and my friends heard this rumor and decided to find out more. We heard that if you chant Bloody Mary 5 times she will come. We tried this out but nothing happened, but when we were walking out the end toilet door swung open and we noticed the mirror was cracked. We ran out laughing with shock.

We tried this again with our daring friend, she decided to look over the end toilet as it had a nail so you couldn't use it when the toilet broke and came out of the ground then we heard a laugh. When we ran out the dryer also came on. We ran and told the dinner lady she was mad that we believed it. In assembly it got mentioned but nobody ever talked of it again.

My child who now goes to that school says that she heard rumors and our experience is going round the school could it be true?

Coast To Coast Ghosts:

True Stories of Hauntings Across America

An employee of the St. James Hotel in New Mexico watches in shock as a fair-haired toddler with a terribly disfigured face disappears into the floor. This is just one of the paranormal mysteries Leslie Rule shares with us-a result of extensive interviews and research uncovering the reasons behind ghost sightings across the country. Coast to Coast Ghosts features dozens of spine-tingling, real-life ghost stories and approximately 50 black-and-white photographs, taken by Rule, including some believed to have captured actual apparitions. Only the reader can decide. . . .

This is one of the best books I've read about true ghost stories. The writer reaches right in and grabs your attention...making you feel like your right there, experiencing these events right along with the helpless victims sharing their lives with these spirits. Included with the ghostly tales are a listing of haunted colleges and information to "signs that a place is haunted".

It was wonderful to read that this writer was not just writing about other peoples experiences, but she includes several of her own personal experiences with ghosts...making me realize that she just didn't interview and write, she was sympathetic to something she understood to be true, something she has personally experienced. I would highly recommend this book to all that are crazy about reading true ghost stories. Fantastic writer! Hope to see more books from Leslie Rule in the future on this subject! ~ Kimberly L. 4th Grade Bloody Mary Experience

When I was in the forth grade everyone was doing this "Bloody Mary" thing in the bathroom. All the boys would come out of the bathroom and say, "Bloody Mary's in the bathroom, don't drop her baby or she'll kill you!"

I was one of those girls that didn't seem to be scared of anything. I decided I would go into the girl's bathroom and try it out. I went in turned off the lights, and told my cousin Kayla to open the door and turn on the lights when I yelled for her. I turned off the lights got in front of the mirror and said, "Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary" three times in front of the mirror and spun around three times.

I looked into the mirror and saw a tall woman standing there with a white dress on, red eyes, and fire behind her, just staring at me. I couldn't stop staring at her, I was stuck. My cousin Kayla ran into the bathroom turned on the lights and Bloody Mary was gone. I started crying like crazy and told everyone what happened to me and nobody believed me, and still to this day no one actually believes that this happened to me. When I think about this all I want to do is cry because it is so freaking scary.

I would totally not suggest doing Bloody Mary even as a joke because IT IS REAL and you do not want to experience anything like I have. Who knows what would of happened to me if my cousin had not turned on the lights?!

Bloody Mary Fact or Fiction

I was at my friends house and we were talking about Bloody Mary and she told me that she was a real girl once and she was buried alive. I did not believe her so she told me to do the dare. You would have to go to the bathroom turn on the water let it run. Then write 666 on the wall in soap. Then spin around three times and while your spinning say Bloody Mary every time you spin around. I said no because I was scared to so I told her to do it and that was when I regretted that day. She went into the bathroom and she shut the door. She said she would be out in ten minutes, she said if she was in there for more then that to open the door. I will skip the boring part of waiting but ten minutes went by.

I went to go open the door but it was locked, so I got the key (Angela told me where the key was). I unlocked the door and walked inside. There was no soap on the mirror, no water in the sink, no nothing. So I thought Angela was hiding in the shower to scare me. I opened the curtain and lying on the floor of the tub was Angela's body stabbed and her mouth open witH shock. Warning don't do Bloody Mary or you will lose something like your best friend.

Thank you for reading my story.

Stay Away!

Ann's bedroom was dark except for the centrally located flickering flame. Mary, Ann, Regina and Yvonne had just about given up on the Halloween night Ouija Board festivities because of her idiot brother constantly interrupting their concentration. Finally, a frustrated Ann ushered her irritating younger brother out the door; this time threatening to end his life. "If you disturb my sleepover again I'll kill you," she growls, "now get out, and stay out!"

The girls were intent on contacting American folklore legend "Bloody Mary." They had already taken their respectful turns standing and chanting the witch's name in front of Ann's antique mirrored dresser. Now, nearly midnight, guided by curiosity and candlelight, they were one with the little heart-shaped planchette.

"Bloody Mary are you there?" The game piece remains motionless. The girls seem determined as they take turns questioning the dead. "Bloody Mary are you with us?"
"I felt it move," whispers Regina, with her index finger resting gently.
"Did you move it?" Yvonne asks in a shaky voice.
"It's not moving," says Mary. "Let me try." Mary is much more demanding in her inquest. She bellows, "Mary Worth! Are you here?"

The little heart-shaped device nearly shoots off the board to the right but halts at the bottom corner, on the word "YES." The flame whooshes in the same direction.
Ann's bedroom is silent as the girls breaths get shorter, faster.
The determined Mary adjusts her middle and index fingers on the Ouija's tool. Her voice, deeper than usual, roars "Show us you are here Bloody Mary."

At this instant, around midnight on Halloween night, the girls gasp as Ann's bedroom door violently swings open. Nail polish, a can of hair spray and several head bands fly off the dresser, the clatter achieves in garnering the attention of each girl. It is at this moment, just before the cool rush of air blows out the candle flame, where each teen girl swears that they see something in the mirror just above the dresser. They all scream.

Ann's annoying kid-brother bursts through the threshold of the doorway and flicks on the light switch.

All four young girls describe the same hideous creature of a woman with both hands extending, protruding rather, from the dark glass. They were convinced that it was Mary the Witch reaching out with her long dirty fingers, glaring at them with blossoming black eyes, her sticky black hair so languid and scarce, and a huge gaping black hole for a mouth.

Ann's kid brother laughs out loud at them, flirts with the pale and terrified, and then begins picking up the little bottles of nail polish from the carpet.

A Bloody Mary Scare

By Jazmine

One night, my friend Sam and I were staying at my house. Bored and with nothing to do, she suggested we try the whole Bloody Mary thing. Of course, we both thought it to be fake and just a laugh. We were wrong.

We went into the bathroom, locked the door, turned off the light and lit a candle. Laughing, we spun around three times while saying "Bloody Mary". We stood facing the mirror, and at first all we could see was our own amused reflections.

I leant close to the mirror, trying to see anything, and I ended up with my nose touching the mirror. Then I saw something which caused me to scream. It was a woman, a face gaunt and leering, with long black hair that had been soaked in blood. She held a knife.

Sam screamed too, and she grabbed my shoulder to pull me back. Once her hand touched my shoulder, the face disappeared. I fell back beside Sam, and looked at her.

"You're face," she said to me, eyes wide.

I looked in the mirror, and there were four, long scratch marks from the corner of my left eye to my chin. They started to bleed as I watched them.

Since that day, all those years ago, I've been terrified to look into a mirror, fearing that woman's face. I've still got the scars on my face. Sam has been to a psychiatrist constantly since then. We don't talk anymore, the incident was much too horrifying that it cut our friendship apart. I regret it ever since.

Was it really Bloody Mary? I think so. It may of been a poltergeist, picking up on our energy and deciding to trick us. But, it was a woman, drenched in blood like the legends. Whether or not it was her, the scars remain and my life has been altered terrible since that night.

Bloody Mary Quarter Ritual

By Brittney Lee Alicene

My friends; Margaret, Katie, and I were doing the Bloody Mary ritual with a quarter. This is how you do the quarter Bloody Mary ritual;

a. Light 3 candles
b. Turn out the lights

1. Get at least 2 people in a circle
2. Put your knee's together and don't move them
3. Take a quarter and flip it
4. Ask a question
5. If it lands on heads it means yes
6. If it lands on tales it means no

Keep asking this as long as you want.

We did this about 6 times until we got something. We were at Margaret's house when the lights went out, and the 3 candles went out. The next day we tried it again, except we did it in the bathroom. The toilet flushed. We asked; Bloody Mary if you are there please do something to one of us. Do you know what she did? She knocked a bottle of shampoo and it spilled all over Katie and some went on me. When this happened the door flew open. So we turned on the lights before something happened.

The next week we were outside and we did it and it was outside at night. We threw a hool-a-hoop onto a telephone pole hook. We did the ritual again but we asked can you knock the hool-a-hoop down. It knocked down and Margaret broke the circle. If you break the circle something bad will happen to you.

The next day Margaret said to me that someone was in her room and when she woke up she had a cut on her arm. It was the size of a mini carrot. She didn't know how she got it. We never did it again because to this day she hears that same noise in her room.

It was quite scary because we are at such a young age of 12, 13, and 9. I was quite scared so I thought I would share this with you

The Oxford Book of Victorian Ghost Stories

The Victorians excelled at telling ghost stories. In an age of rapid scientific progress, the idea of a vindictive past able to reach out and violate the present held a special potential for terror. Throughout the nineteenth century, fictional ghost stories developed in parallel with the more general Victorian fascination with death and what lay beyond it. Though they were as much a part of the cultural and literary fabric of the age as imperial confidence, the best of the stories still retain their original power to surprise and unsettle. In Victorian Ghost Stories, the editors map out the development of the ghost story from 1850 to the early years of the twentieth century and demonstrate the importance of this form of short fiction in Victorian popular culture. As well as reprinting stories by supernatural specialists such as J. S. Le Fanu and M. R. James.

My Encounter With Bloody Mary

By Lexi

Well it happened not that long ago at my mums house and I was by self and got bored so I decided to try the Bloody Mary thing. Anyway I went into the bathroom, turned off all the lights and did my thing. Nothing happened so I just went to my room and went to sleep. I turned off all the lights.

I thought I heard someone come into my room. I opened my eyes and out of the corner of my eye I could see a lady I only saw the back of her and what looked like long black hair thinking it was imagination I just closed my eyes and tried going to sleep but something made me wake up and I saw her again. This time she was facing me. I saw long black her and what looked to be an eye in an opening of her hair. I closed my eyes and then opened them again and she was gone. Still scared I closed my eyes tight and tried to go to sleep.

The next morning I was thinking about it. I'm still not sure who it was. All I know is that I don't know anyone with black hair. Was it bloody Mary or was it just a ghost? Strange things still happen in my room after I tried to summon her like something always wakes me up in the middle of the night or strange voices even during the day.

My Bloody Mary Experience

By Mackenzie

My mother loves hearing scary stories and freaking me out since I'm a scaredy-cat. I've always been scared of ghosts but I listen to her stories all the same. One night I invited my friend over who I'll call Jane. Jane and I loved freaking ourselves out and when my mother told us about Bloody Mary we immediately wanted to try it.

We were told by my mother that if you stand in a bathroom with no lights and no candles or anything and you chant 'Bloody Mary' three times she'll appear.

We both piled into our bathroom. Our bathroom was a narrow room with two doors. We entered a door from the hallway and there was a sink and the mirror to the left, the toilet next to that, and the shower straight ahead. Right across from the toilet was the other door which led to a bedroom. Anyway, Jane and I were in the bathroom with the lights off. My hand was on the light switch so I could flip the switch quickly and so we chanted 'Bloody Mary' three times.

Nothing happened for a few minutes until we finally heard a little rustling. We both looked over and the shower curtain was swinging wildly back and forth with no wind or anything to cause it. I immediately tried to turn on the light but the light-switch didn't do anything. Me and Jane both started screaming and didn't even bother to see if Mary appeared.

I was flipping the light switch up and down but the light still wouldn't turn on. Finally I tried the door but it was locked, and I know I didn't lock it. I unlocked it and we both, quite literally, fell out of the bathroom. We both ran as far away from the bathroom as we could. I went and got my mother to investigate.

The shower curtain had swung so much that a couple of the rings had broken. My mother grabbed a flashlight since the light still wouldn't turn on. My mother examined the light bulbs and discovered that all four of them had been unscrewed, even though they worked fine before me and Jane chanted Bloody Mary.

Jane and I freaked out and needless to say never tried Bloody Mary again. Every once in a while when I go in there to shower the shower curtain will rustle or the lights will flicker. Fortunately since then we've moved from the house but I now know better than to do any strange chants.

Sorry it's kinda flippant. I originally submitted this story under a humorous true ghost stories site and had to edit it a little bit. You an edit as you see fit. Unfortunately true.

We Summoned Bloody Mary And A Hunter Spirit

By Kiersten

My friend I were bored one day because we were at our cousins house. All of the adults and other kids were inside right before the football game. So we put on are coats and headed out our cousins back door that led to this deck type thing.

My friend and I went on the side of the house and said this spell that she got off the internet it was how to summon Bloody Mary and we said the spell and nothing happen until just then when we went inside the house there was a dark creepy shadow with deep red glowing eyes following us around every time we turned around the thing would vanish but we looked in the mirror and saw it.

Then we went outside and we heard all this shooting coming from down the road and we looked and there was a faint image of a hunter from about the 1950's and we ran into her moms van and the door shut on us and all the doors locked on us. We could not get out for 5 minutes. That was one crazy day for us and we were glad it was over. We thank god that we were alive. Creepy for all

Bloody Mary Witness

By Anonymous

This may not seem scary but to us who experienced it, it was terrifying. So we were at a sleep over and two of girls decided to do Bloody Mary. My other friend and I wanted to watch outside the bathroom and the last two were to scared to watch. The girls who did it went inside the bathroom and outside it, me and my friend were watching in horror. We both heard screaming from inside and the girls ran out breathing hard and saying "oh my god oh my god!" then they laughed when they saw our scared faces and said "Ha Ha just kidding!" so then they went back in and did it again. Me and my friend who were watching saw a bright light that faded to purple that came from the crack under the door. Then screaming followed that. They came yelling "oh my god, oh my god! Saw a face! A faint white face!" I know Bloody Mary seems like a joke but you should try it and it will scare the crap out of you! They weren't joking! I'm totally honest!

Most people don't take Bloody Mary seriously but I always will. At my birthday sleep over, I decided to do the Bloody Mary trick with my friend. We went in the bathroom and waited. Then we ran out screaming to scare the people who were watching. But the second time, we were really going to try Bloody Mary. We preformed the ritual. When we looked in the mirror, we saw a malevolent, vague, white face there. Then there was a flash of bright light, only it wasn't light. It was bright, but gray and dark at the same time. Like shadow light or something! Me and my friend ran out of the bathroom yelling our heads of. We were crazy scared and had scratches on us. This is why I will never forget my 12th birthday party. Respecting the dead would probably be in your best interest.

Blue Baby - Bloody Mary Variation

By Valerie Katherine

My friend Ashley and I were having a sleep over at my house, and we were so psyched. It was about, like, 11 at night, and we had just finished watching Mean Girls. We were really bored, and no where near tired. "We should do Bloody Mary!" I screamed. Ashley looked at me with that what-the-bleep-are-ya'-five look. "Blue Baby," she whispered with the same look. I recalled what had happened after school at the Y about a year ago.

The legend says that Blue Baby was bloody Mary's baby boy. He had died at birth, because he had some weird fever that turned ya blue. If you go into a bathroom, turn of the lights, cradle your arms, and chant Blue Baby 3 times in front of a mirror, you will feel something get heavy in your arms. That is Blue Baby. If you drop 'im, you'll get scratched.

My friends Erika, Lyndsey, and Ashley went into the bathroom and did Blue Baby. My friends Hollee and Crissiana and I waited outside, cause we were all freaked to death of that story. Like, 5 minutes later, Lyndsey came running out like she was bein' chased. Ashley stumbled out, and then finally Erika. Erika had this HUGE cut down her leg. I hate the sight of blood, but I asked what happened anyway. "Blue Baby!" She yelled. "Dingbat!" Ashley yelled.

She interrupted my thoughts. "So, ya gonna do Blue baby or what?" She kept going. "Y-yeah! I aint chicken!" I kept yelling. So we did it. Right on the third chant, I felt my arms go heavy. I nearly choked. I wouldn't dare drop what was in my arms. "T-turn on the light." I said to Ashley. Blue Baby goes away if you turn on the light. Ashley, I knew, didn't have her arms cradled. "What?" She whispered. "TURN ON THE BLEEPIN' LIGHT NOW ASHLEY!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. She sure heck did. The weight in my arms was gone now.

We crawled into bed, swearing never to tell anyone this. Well, I broke my promise, but for a good reason. This happened when I was 10. I'm 11 now, (big difference). Please, if your gonna do this, have another person in the bathroom with you, just to turn on the lights!

This was the scariest thing that's ever happened to me besides 9/11

I Saw Bloody Mary

Ok I don't care if I believe me or not I know what I saw.

I was in grade 2 and it was the middle of the year and me and my brother were in the living room we were getting dressed I had my outfit on the sofa that you can see the bathroom in and my brother had the sofa were you can see the dinning room from. I looked in the bathroom while I was putting on my girl tie and I seen the woman she had hair spiked up from her head and she was wearing a dress with a knife in her forehead she was screaming and I called my brother over to show him he saw it and then suddenly we got a bad feeling and we started to get really scared.so we went to our mothers room which was the most stupidest thing we did because my mothers room is rite in front of the bathroom.anyway when we got our mother up she grabbed a bad and went to the bathroom. (she thought it was a robber she doesn't believe in ghost)and when she turned on the light me and my brother saw a black smoke and it disappeared and I have been seeing black smoke a lot and I'm scared I might she her again.

Don%u2019t Even Whisper the Name Bloody Mary!

A couple Internet friends and I were telling stories on December 22 2009, and one of them got this super long Bloody Mary story. The suspense and terror was nearly enough to kill me! I love scary stories so I decided to whisper it as I read it to make even more scary.

I got to the point where the characters in the story said "Bloody Mary" 6 times, I imagined my self spinning every time they said the name. About 10 minutes later I had this sensation that something was on my head, I figured it was just my headband. Then I thought " Wait, didn't I just take that headband off?" Then I felt something wet and warm dripping down my head and piercing pain. This was not a fun scary, this was terrible!

I spun my head around to see that a green fog/haze seemed to be lurking behind me. I tried to scream but it seemed as if I couldn't............

So I was way younger.. 6 or 7 and we was messing around. My friend said hey let's play a game. Of course I agreed. We went in this room all it had was a mirror and a shed in it and the mirror in the wall. So we shut the door and stood on the bed. Repeating. Bloody mary the room had a dim flow and the mirror lit up blood began draining from the mirror and there was a dark shadow replacing our reflection.. we jumped off the bed ran for the door.. I looked back the figure was holding its hand out reaching for us.. we started screaming and kicking the door our parents opened the door and everything went back to normal. We was crying so hard... But how is this not true when we both saw the same thing. At the same time. Still to this day I'm nervous about a dark room and a mirror.

One day at school, before the trip, I was talking about bloody mary to Drew before trying to summon her.(Now, that was in the day, so when I tried to summon her, it did not work.) After I tried that, he jumped out in the mirror screaming. (i could tell easily) And so we went to Ohio Caverns, only to be scared by darkness. When I went to sleep, I had a dream, a freaky dream. It was a dream.............about........................Bloody Mary, the real thing! I was also talking to a dead person. I still have occasinal dreams about her. I would go on, but I said enouh for now.
