Retro Plastic Blow Molded Christmas Decorations

Looking for a Christmas Blow Mold Decoration? Do you remember these from your childhood? Or perhaps you still own a plastic Christmas figure. These blow molds come in all sorts of shapes and sizes including Santas, Snowmen, Penguins, Nativities and more. Some are designed to be lighted and some are non lighted. All are made by a process known as blow molding which produces a nice hollow plastic decoration or shape perfect for Christmas displays. These decorations are still being manufactured today, but you can also find well kept older versions which I will include on this page.

For Daytime -or- Nighttime Display

Unlike most lighted Christmas displays, these plastic figures are visible during the day AND night.

Memories of these Plastic Decorations

Did your family have any of these Retro Christmas Decor Molds?

These decorations made from plastic (literally blown into a shape) are the kinds of decorations found in attics, storage rooms and garages. They are the ones we remember from our grandparent's homes. They are durable and last for generations. My own grandmother owned a lighted blow-mold Santa we displayed each year. She placed it near the door as a door greeter and I'll remember it forever. Do you remember any from your own childhood?

I had a blow mold santa that had such a pretty face...like the old coke santas. I got it when I was two, and he was taller than me and I drug it all over the store until my family had to buy it for me. I lost it when I lost my home in a tornado this year, and of all the things that we lost, I think I will miss that the most. I am looking online for one like him, but I haven't found one yet. He was holding a candy cane like the one on this site, but his gloves were yellow. If anyone knows of one, I would be interested in purchasing it.

One year we put a flock of white flamingos in our yard in about a foot of snow. During the middle of the night our neighbors helped us out by placing Christmas wreaths around their necks. It was all done tongue in cheek and the whole neighborhood got a good laugh!

My husband and I have collected a lot of the blow mold decorations over the past 21 years. We have mosly Halloween and Christmas, but have a few for Easter and Thanksgiving. What I am in need of is not the Darice cord, but the cord that has the 3 3/4" round plastic plate that holds a 25 watt lightbulb. The Dracula and Frankenstein both use this type of light cord and our elves need new ones.

I remember when they used to make Xmas decor or any decor that was meant to last and actually meant what the season stood for. Not, saqnta coming out of a makeshift blowup "outhouse",seriously, with an Elf holding his nose!!! What has this beautiful Holiday come to? To me , as well as my many family members both young and old, Christmas still has a meaning, take it as you will, but, you folks to my family give people a hope thats theres still a TRUE meaning to Christmas, and theres still people out there who can build with thier hearts and a respect to Christmas. THANK YOU>

    Hi Bill,
There was another question about this a while back. I've extended the guestbook so it now shows (about 8 blurbs down). Take a look at that response with more details, but here's a link to the Darice Cord With Light-White which may be what you are looking for. And be sure to read the reviews too. One customer mentions using this on their blow molds.

    Thanks for stopping by!

Yep, back in the 70's we had a blow molded snowman just like the one pictured above. I have always love these decorations. This is fun lens, brings back a lot of good memories.

Hi I happened upon your ad during an internet search for a reliable place to list and sell my Christmas blow molds. I have a 5' 1970's light-up Santa (standing), a 3' light-up 1970's Frosty with carrot nose, a set of red 1960's light-up weighted outdoor Christmas candles (3'tall). All of these are in perfect condition and working order (I can e-mail pics). I also have a set of hand-crafted standing ''Rudolph" reindeer that uses a red flashing nose (indoor/covered porch use) that are 4ft tall and very unusual! I am located in SC so keep in mind these items would have to be shipped and buyer will have to cover the cost. The blow molds x-large items but don't weigh alot....however the candles and wooden Rudolph set are heavy items. If you are interested e-mail for pics and prices. Thanks!

    Hi Terri,
The very best thing to do is to list your items on eBay. That is where folks are looking for them. You can click on any eBay link on this page to get there. If you do, let me know and I'll promote them here for you. Ebay takes a few minutes to set up, but is worth it.
Good luck with it! Oh, and one more thought, you could try Craigslist too. Ebay reaches a wider audience though.

    Help,
I have a santa and sleigh that I believe are made by Grand Venture or General Foam which I desperately need runners for Santa's sleigh or I am afraid that he will have to sit on the ground this year. Anyone know where to find these???? Thanks.
  • Emptynest1002 Nov 12, 2011 @ 11:02 pm | delete
I doubt if replacement parts are available. Here's their website: http://www.grandventure.com/empirepics.html . Click on Contact Us in the left column to find out how to contact them. Here's a link for a picture of the sleigh. You could cut your own runners out of thin plywood using the picture as a pattern if replacement runners are not available.

Wish Union Plastic or General Plstic Foam still continue making Christmas Plastic displays
  • puzzlemaker Dec 9, 2010 @ 9:33 am | delete
    Hi Ronald,
I've just done more investigation of these two companies and it looks like General Plastic Foam is still in business. The 3pc Nativity Set listed above is labeled "by General Foam". A little more research finds them still in business. They do not sell to the public, but are still manufacturing. Amazon is probably still the best/least expensive outlet for purchasing.
It's harder to find info on Union. But, again, take a look at the Plastic Penguins, it also states, "by Union Products." I clicked over to the Pink Flamingos (what Union is famous for) and the description states, "Made in the USA using the original Union Products molds." So maybe Union sold some of their molds? I don't know and it seems hard to find information on the subject. As listed above, Ebay is a treasure trove for these retro style decorations. Thanks for stopping by and your comment!

Do you know where I can buy the electrical light cords for the Union Toy Soldiers? Mine are very old. I'd like to replace them.
    Thanks.

I've just sent you an email. Thanks! I'll repeat it here for anyone else that may be interested.
    Stephanie,
Thanks for visiting and your question about blow mold lighting.

I've just done some investigating and this amazon product looks like a good solution:
    Cord with White Light

A reviewer writes about this product: "I was looking all over for something like these light cord replacements. I went to Menards, Ace, Home Depot but I could not find anything even similar to this to act as a replacement to the old cords for my outdoor holiday light decorations (such as the plastic Mary & Joseph, Santa, Snowman, etc..). Its crazy that these stores would sell replacement bulbs but not the cords, especially in the holiday section. I wondered If these were the right size to fit in the holes in the decorations, and turns out they are perfect. At this price I bought a bunch so I can replace all the old cords and they arrived so fast that now I can put up all the decorations before the bad weather gets here."

The product description states: "The C7-1/2 Bulb and clip will securely fit into a hole that is between 7/8in and 1-1/2in in diameter. For indoor use only"

Do you think this will work with your toy soldiers?

    Thanks,
    Paige

Hi, I too am looking for a replacement cord with clip for Christmas blow-molds. The only ones I'm finding have a rotary switch in the middle and are listed for indoor use only. Have you found any other source for replacement cords as such for outdoor use?
  • Rob Jan 2, 2012 @ 7:27 pm | delete
I am also having trouble finding an outdoor replacement cord. As Ed said, all are indoor ones. Has to be someone who sells. Any ideas?
  • Ed Jan 2, 2012 @ 11:55 pm | delete
    Hi Rob,
I think the 'weak' point in the cord for outdoor use would be the rotary switch. I took out the rotary switch and reconnected the cord with electrical tape. Seemed to work OK for outside use for the past 3 weeks. Would still prefer to find such cords for outdoor use.

Never had any of these blow mold Christmas decorations. I like the penguins.
