At the moment,I don't have a Blu-ray player. is there a substantial difference in Blu-ray movie quality?
  • Doityourself Feb 21, 2011 @ 7:48 pm | delete
I do not have one yet but hope to have one soon. Geat, great lens.
  • The_Goblins_Den Feb 3, 2011 @ 1:45 pm | delete
Yes, I finally switched to Blu-Ray...and it makes quite a difference. I'd say my favorite "showcase title" so far is Avatar. The special effects really shine in HD. Plus, it subliminally sells Blu-Ray players just because of all the blue colors in it.
  • dschandar Jan 24, 2011 @ 9:56 am | delete

  • danny79 Dec 29, 2010 @ 12:56 pm | delete
    Hey there,
do a little more action movies, like lord of the rings. matrix
Old movies, and dramas are interesting but there is no reason to watch them on Blu-ray
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Dec 29, 2010 @ 1:36 pm | delete
I think maybe, Danny, you've missed the point. These movies are "amongst the best in terms of quality of picture, sound and extras" and I would say watching an old movie that has been reworked to be as good as or better than when it was originally issued is definitely worth doing.

I'm not saying the modern day blockbuster action movies are not good, too and, when they rank at the top for the quality of sound, picture and extras, they will have the opportunity to appear on this list. Unfortunately, it is a short list and there are so many great movies on blu-ray!
  • quantummike Dec 27, 2010 @ 3:22 pm | delete
you have a lot of good movies listed here !!
  • GrowWear Dec 24, 2010 @ 4:32 am | delete

Wow, you have just convinced me, I'll have to get into this. Thanks. I'll favourite it so I can use your lists when I get a Blue-ray player. Great lens by the way.
Come and vote on my "The Best Songs of 2010" lens. Should be fun.
Happy holidays and have a great New Year, 2011 and as someone else said here on Squidooland, Happy Squidmas! :)
  • DC_Film_Buff Dec 20, 2010 @ 12:21 pm | delete
Though technically not a "movie," how about the HD Moods AMOS Rise disc? It's sort of like Discovery's "Planet Earth" (or "Life") but instead of having narration by a celebrity, it has a great classical music soundtrack that helps tell the stories. Lots of beautiful nature and wildlife scenes.
  • conwil9 Nov 25, 2010 @ 7:09 am | delete
Hello you say we can put in ideas here is one how to train your dragon, toy story three,Alice in wonderland
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Nov 28, 2010 @ 8:56 am | delete
Great choices for sure, although Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland has some gory moments that parents might want to be aware of. Read more about Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland by clicking here.
  • conwil9 Nov 25, 2010 @ 7:05 am | delete
Ok why are all these in but there are no kid movies for my kids
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Nov 28, 2010 @ 8:54 am | delete
This list is based on the blu-ray movies with the best sound, picture and extras, regardless of who they are meant for. Unfortunately, not many of the children's movies fit that category although there are, for sure, a lot of great children's movies on blu-ray. You might check out some of my pages devoted to movies for children like The Five Best Blu-ray Disney Movies For Young Children 2009.
  • MikeEssex Nov 23, 2010 @ 4:32 pm | delete
Beauty and the Beast looks amazing. For a 10 year old movie the tranfer to Blu Ray is very impressive.

  • techjunkie11 Nov 16, 2010 @ 9:57 am | delete
I would add Sherlock Homes in as one of the best picture quality.
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Nov 28, 2010 @ 8:59 am | delete

FANTASTIC list! Criterion blu-rays are the best in presentation and in film selection.
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Oct 22, 2010 @ 12:45 pm | delete
I agree. Criterion is going all out when they reissue their movies on blu-ray.
  • vecwun Oct 21, 2010 @ 8:01 pm | delete
    what?!?!?! no Avatar
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Oct 22, 2010 @ 12:51 pm | delete
Avatar was amazing but unfortunately, it ranked slightly below the movies on this list in terms of overall quality of picture, sound and extras.
  • BuckHawk Oct 21, 2010 @ 12:20 pm | delete
I don't have a blu-ray player, yet, but when I get one, I'm going right for Beauty and the Beast! I love that movie.
  • Susan52 Oct 20, 2010 @ 8:12 am | delete
I don't have a blu-ray player, but this certainly looks like a great shopping list for gifts for people who do have blu-ray. There's something here for just about everyone!
  • Joan4 Oct 19, 2010 @ 7:50 pm | delete
No, I don't have a blu-ray player yet, but I do like your list of movies! Looks like I need to watch movies all winter!

blu-rays to me are like what dvds did to video tapes, the future
  • LabKitty Oct 17, 2010 @ 6:21 pm | delete
It must be glorious to see 2001 on Blu-ray after years of seeing it on old beat-up VHS and network TV. There's a Kubrick website that has some stunning still images of 2001 that give you an idea of what the film is *supposed* to look - we put a link to the site on our 2001 lens if you'd like to check it out (wink, wink).
  • NadiaO Oct 17, 2010 @ 4:24 pm | delete

  • kiwisoutback Oct 14, 2010 @ 8:24 pm | delete

  • awelldressedbullet Sep 27, 2010 @ 12:45 pm | delete

  • italianizeyourself Sep 19, 2010 @ 10:06 pm | delete
It would be interesting to see 2001 on blu ray. That movie had the perfect sight/sound mix. I wonder how Terminator 2 would be on this format. The special effects in that have stood up pretty well.
  • JeffreyTymczak Sep 18, 2010 @ 1:07 pm | delete

I can just imagine how much of an experience it is to have blu-ray. Right now, just having a surround bose is magnificent especially for movies like Master and Commander. Want to try this.
  • Sep 1, 2010 @ 3:41 am | delete
the best quality ever...i enjoyed watching movies with my family through blu ray
  • ajgodinho Aug 12, 2010 @ 12:42 pm | delete
No, I don't own a blu-ray player yet. I consciously decided not to get in right now with the advancements on HD and 3D technology. With 3D in the forefront, there will be more emphasis on blu-ray players because they are a requirement for 3D technology, so the prices will drop even further and technology will advance. Have you switched to 3D yet or arwe you going to wait? I recently created a lens on 3D Technology. I will lensroll your lens to my 3D lens. Great job! :)
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Aug 12, 2010 @ 5:11 pm | delete
Personally, I'm not interested in 3D technology. For me, it just doesn't add enough to an excellent movie although I'd have to admit the 3D in Alice in Wonderland was very striking and the 3D in Avatar was done well enough that I could forget I was watching 3D. That was pretty amazing. I'd rather save an occasional outing to see a 3D movie for a movie that is particularly well done at the theatre.
  • rubiprojects Jul 25, 2010 @ 6:31 am | delete

Brenda, I had referred my son to this lens, because he was shopping around for a blu-ray player. He said that your information was very helpful, but he bought local. I'm going to get his DVD player, which will be an upgrade for me. ! Thanks for the help! :)

I love that Planet Earth is one of the top selections and that people do care about the environment.
  • atomau Feb 6, 2010 @ 6:54 am | delete
Have you seen the "Die Hard" blu-ray? I've watched the film at least ten times, but it looks so much better on Blu-Ray than it ever has, it really blew me away. Other films like "Terminator 2" that came out at the birth of the format seem to have worse transfers than the DVD's before them, but the first "Die Hard" is an excellent Blu-Ray transfer
  • homeGardener Feb 2, 2010 @ 8:53 am | delete
Wow, you really have a splendid collection of Blue ray info, I am going to get a PS3 this year , its got Blue ray build in. Mind you, I find that watching dvds on a High spec PC, in 1280 * 1024 resolution is remarkably similar to blue ray, perhaps even sharper. Mind you I've only watched blue ray movies in the shops so far, and block buster :)
  • richperiod Jan 25, 2010 @ 9:12 am | delete

Good lens. I love blu-ray movies
  • lightrix Jan 9, 2010 @ 8:12 pm | delete
Very good list, however I think Planet Earth deserves the #1 spot. I have 9 of the 10 movies on your list and Planet Earth is DEFINITELY number one in my book. If anyone reads this and decides to purchase planet earth, definitely get the one narrated by David Attenborough, his voice goes with the movies much better in my opinion.

Congratulations on your Purple Star Brenda. Everyone can learn a lot from the way you research and lay out your lenses - here's one of my very last Angel Blessings for you. Not just for this lens but because you shine! It's been great sharing my Angel journey with you :)

The March of the Penguins is the one I'd be most likely to buy if I had a Blu-ray player, but I currently don't have any way to watch even ordinary DVD's.

I'm a late adopter ... still have a standard DVD player and a miniscule collection. Now, can anyone make a good, easy to use VHS/8mm to DVD converter? Please!??? My tapes are aging! Great lens and congrats on the Purple Star. Saved for when I bring my tech gear into the 21st century \.

Nice lens. I am not a fan of movies but can associate with Planet Earth. I watched the entire series also had David's son, Robert, as my lecturer for Bio-anthropology. I even met David Attenborough once. Nice man. 5*

Lovely lens, only recently I discovered what Blu-ray was, the quality of the image really amazed me. I enjoyed reading this lens, 5*! Oh and a big thank you for blessing “The Death Of Camcorders” lens. I really appreciate that.

This is a very good lens on Blue Ray movies. I don't have one and haven't watch a movie on one yet, it would be fun to see a great movie on one though. Blessings from a Squid Angel that wants to wish you a very Merry Christmas Season! ~ Jingle Bells!
  • ImproveMeU Nov 30, 2009 @ 12:36 pm | delete
Thanks for the 5* lens, you have no idea how you have helped with my Christmas shopping

Nice Lens! Thanks for visiting and the blessing. We don't own a blu-ray player. My son has a PS3 so we use it to watch the blu-ray movies. I would love to have the Spider-Man movies.
  • effalicious Nov 28, 2009 @ 8:37 am | delete
I own some of these movies on Blueray, pretty cool list.

Great lens - you've been blessed by a squidoo angel :)

These are great picks to display the difference in Blu Ray quality as opposed to DVD. 2001 definitely has the music and definition with the time travel sequence.
  • hellocstock Mar 13, 2009 @ 1:44 pm | delete
Awsome lens but I would also add WALL-E to the list. That movie looks and sounds amazing on blu-ray. I also have a lens on blu-rays too. Check it out if you like. Thanks

I've written a lens on the Battle of Thermopylae which the movie 300 is based on:

Very nice looking lens. Personally I liked 300 but guess I'll have to wait to get blu-ray. In the meantime, good stuff. 5 stars.

I love black hawk down, that was an insane movie.

You are right, I should add the PlayStation 3 to this page. I have done a separate page all about the PS3 at The Sony PlayStation Blu-ray Player ~~ The Best Blu-ray Player.[in reply to thrivingmom]
  • thrivingmom Dec 2, 2008 @ 2:41 pm | delete
There is a blu-ray player you should add that I bet you didn't think of, the Sony Play Station 3. What's so great about it is that it plays blu-ray and HD DVD's. It's also a computer that lets you surf the web. With a blu-tooth keyboard, you could even do your Squidoo lenses on your wides creen TV with the PS3.
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Nov 25, 2008 @ 9:07 am | delete
That is tough, Andy! At least both have come way down in price. I know you will shop carefully![in reply to AndyPo]
  • AndyPo Nov 25, 2008 @ 7:57 am | delete
Excellent lens. I was going to buy a blu-ray played, then my Panasonic high-def television stopped working (after just over a year) so I just have my old 25" TV. No point in buying the player until I replace the TV, but maybe I shall treat myself to both this Christmas
  • CleanerLife Nov 15, 2008 @ 7:56 pm | delete
I'm not ready for Blu-ray yet, but I can see why these movies made the list. I would especially be interested in seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey on Blu-ray on an appropriate big screen TV since it's one of my favorites, and I never had the chance to see it in a theater.
  • spirituality Nov 14, 2008 @ 2:53 am | delete
No, not another way to get movies digital... Is blue ray a cd-like format?
  • rockycha Nov 3, 2008 @ 11:37 am | delete
I have to get me one of these players! Excellent lenscrafting! Giant Fives :)

Blu-ray is definitely the wave of the future. You have a very nice and informative lens. Super job!
5***** A . My wife and I have been to Ottawa and loved it....we are from Oregon, and it was our favorite city among all the places we visited in Eastern Canada. Best to you!
