Who Are The Blue Dog Democrats?

There are two ways to think about what makes a Blue Dog Democrat. The first is extremely literal. A Blue Dog Democrat is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of Democratic members of the House of Representatives who are in ideological sympathy with the Republican Party.

More broadly, however, any Democrat who supports right wing Republican causes may be called a Blue Dog. This lens recognizes both definitions. There are a large number of Blue Dog Democrats in Congress these days, so there's a good deal of territory that can be covered.

Political Gear Protesting Blue Dogs

Wear a button or bumper sticker in protest against the Blue Dogs

no blue dog democrats campaign buttonThe Blue Dogs' latest shameful maneuver is their opposition to health care reform legislation. Most of the 34 Democrats who voted against Barack Obama's health care reforms were Blue Dogs, and every single leader of the Blue Dog Coalition voted NO to expanding health care. These members of Congress got a lot of money from corporate lobbyists as a reward for their opposition - making this vote not just wrong in terms of policy, but corrupt as well. The button you see here puts a red slash over the picture of a Blue Dog Democrat, to send a clear signal: It's time to put an end to the shenanigans of the Blue Dogs in Congress.

The following items of political merchandise also help American progressives stake out a position of opposition to the Blue Dog Coalition's right wing agenda.

Bologna! These stickers are wrong! That's what we'll all be eating for breakfast, lunch and dinner...unless we get some Blue Dogs in control!

In the past you couldn't get elected in the South unless you fought the GOP, but voted like one of its members.

The voters in blue dog districts, manly conservative in nature, don't want to vote Republican. In their view Republicans suffer from an unfortunate affiliation with Lincoln, who started "The War Of Northern Aggression." Lincoln's war, and his satrap carpetbaggers turned The South into an occupied country during "The Great Unpleasantness. Bitterness remains."

I have to wonder: why do Blue Dog Democrats call themselves Democrats when they seem so eager to vote as Republicans?

Stop wondering because it's not true that they are "eager" to vote republican and some of us do not ever vote republican.

Should Democrats Bother Supporting Mike Arcuri?

A Blue Dog So Right Wing He Might As Well Be GOP

Congressman Michael Arcuri has opposed environmental legislation, helped the Republican Tea Party movement block progressive health care reform, and has voted in favor of extending outrageous big government spying powers used against Americans since the time of George W. Bush. Why should Democratic voters lift a finger to help re-elect Mike Arcuri?
