Blue Mound State Park

Blue Mound State Park is just north of the Village of Blue Mounds, about 25 miles west of Madison in Dane County. This park includes the tallest hill in southern Wisconsin and is a popular place for outdoor recreation for all seasons.

There are two mounds, the East Mound and the West Mound. The West Mound sits 1,716 feet above sea level and about 450 above the surrounding landscape of rolling forests and glacial plains. Blue Mound is on the border between two Wisconsin ecological landscapes. Most of the park is in the Southwest Savanna; the rest is in the Western Coulee and Ridges.

Blue Mound Campground

The park campground is open year-round and contains 77 wooded sites and a rustic accessible cabin for people with disabilities. Sites are 20'x 30' mostly shaded back-ins. Each site including the cabin has a picnic table and fire ring. Some sites have 20 amp electrical hookups, but none of them have water or sewer. Though toilets and water fountains are conveniently located throughout the campground Toilets and water facilities are located throughout the campground while a modern flush toilet and shower building is across from site 30. A dump station is located at the campground entrance behind the recycling and garbage bins. Laundry facilities are a short distance away in the village of Blue Mounds. Supplies are available from local merchants in Blue Mounds. Camping fees are $12 to $17, depending on if you are a Wisconsin resident. Park fee vary from $7 to $10 a day (depending on residency) and $25 to $35 for an annual fee. Rule of thumb, if you stay longer than a couple of days, it pays to pay for the annual pass.

Pets are welcome, but must be kept on a leash and cleaned up after. Pets are not allowed in picnic areas, playgrounds or marked nature trails.

(Note: This isn't our camper. We tent it. But we have discuss getting a pop-up camper or a small RV a number of times.)

Park with a Swimming Pool

Blue Mound State Park is the only Wisconsin state park with a swimming pool. The pool was built in 1972 because so few swimming opportunities were available in the area. There is a separate fee to go swimming. It isn't that much. The pool is large and the water (at least when we were there) was fairy warm. The L-shaped pool varies in depth from 3 feet to 11 feet and wading area for small children.. No need to come to the pool already in your swimwear. This swimming pool has an attached bathhouse with showers, lockers, changing rooms and toilets. Relax in one of the lounge chairs and soak up the sun.

It has been many years since we last camped at Blue Mound State Park. But I remember it as one of the most beautiful State Parks that we have visited. The camping site and faculties were always kept clean. There are plenty of walking trails for hikers or anyone who just wants to explore.

Location of Blue Mound State Park

When we were traveling to Blue Mounds, we had to drive through Madison. It was the worse time of the day. We were in the mist of work traffic. To make matters worse, we became a little disoriented and circled the State Capital three times before we ended up on track.

Picnic Area

Blue Mound State Park offers a number of beautiful and relaxing opportunities in the picnic area. Have your family reunion here.

Vistas have been cut through the trees on the north side of the picnic area, near the towers for those who cannot climb the observation towers; these also offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Play equipment and sandboxes are in the picnic area near the shelters and in the campground. Making it a pleasant time for everyone.

A horseshoe court is on the north side of the main shelter.
