All Surfaces at Once

This is a fish eye view of a mural that takes up 1200 square feel inside the cupola at Blue Sky Vineyard in Southern Illinois.

It starts 40 feet above the floor. People have to crane their necks back to see it above the bar. So it was a challenge making it appear that a person standing so far below the rails could see anything beyond them.

Climbing two ladders got me to the temporary floor we built, and using scaffolds helped me reach the ceiling. It took a week to draw and a couple months to paint with the help of my husband. In all the bathrooms and bedrooms we also painted blue skies and clouds. And so we have our theme!

"Okay," he says, "You can paint one more bird." It was the last thing to do. My friend who visited India six times dropped off this picture for me. He left it in my car. Perfect. I liked the serendipity. I wove it into my mural. However, I drew it a little too high. I didn't know how much of the bird would be blocked by the ledge that went around the bottom of the mural (it wasn't built yet!) So I thought to put him on a bench ... and then some flowers to add another layer.

This pic is taken from the balcony. The ceiling frames the bottom of the mural.
