Blue Teapots: Where to Find the Best Online
Blue teapots are a popular and well regarded item of tableware for the kitchen. However, it can be difficult to know where to find good quality blue teapots without scouting around shops and websites for hours on end. As an Interior Designer, I'm often which are the best to buy and where from. Therefore, on this page I have collected together my favorite blue teapots as well as a little history of how the modern tea pot came into being.
The Early History of the Teapot
It's beginnings in 7th Century China
Compared to the history of tea itself, the teapot is a relatively new invention. During the 7th century, most tea was found in brick form. This was broken up and then dropped in boiling water heated in cauldrons. The tea water was then poured into bowls from which it was sipped. A century later, the tea format was to change to that of powder. The ground tea was again heated before being consumed from a bowl. Before it was sipped however, the powder was whisked into a froth and allowed to settle.
The Evolution of the Teapot
Their popularity grows and spreads
Vessels much like teapots have been in existence for thousands of years in China. However, they had been used mainly for holding water and wine. It was during the 14th Century that leaf infusion began, which marked a major change in the type of tea used. The new way of making tea meant a pot was necessary in order for the tea to be steeped.
It was to be in the Chinese region of YiXing that the first teapot similar to the type we know today, was produced. They were made from clay and were regarded as quality items. These teapots were a mixture of the earlier bowls used for drinking brick tea and the modern teapot we know and love in the modern era. It would be a little while longer before tea cups were first produced. Before these, the drinker of the tea would sip directly from the spout of the teapot.
The Modern Teapot is Born
A globular shaped pot makes it's first appearence
In the 18th Century, a new type of clay was discovered and used to make better quality teapots. Technology in Europe had also improved and this led to fine porcelain globular teapots being created that were far superior to any made elsewhere, including China. The European globular shaped teapot was inspired by the early Chinese wine vessels as well as Islamic coffee pots from the Middle East. Over the next couple of centuries the teapot would change little until the 20th Century, when more weird and wonderful designs were created.
