Yes, my daughter is in the Army, serving in Afghanistan. My grandson, a Marine, leaves Monday for Afghanistan. My granddaughter is a Lieutenant in the Navy. I am a veteran of the Women's Army Corps, and I have another daughter who is also an Army veteran. I just sent my daughter a "care" package last week. It's important to stay in touch as much as possible with your service member, to help keep up their morale. In WWII, letters took weeks and sometimes months to arrive to their intended recipient, and sometimes they never arrived. We are fortunate in that we have a much quicker communication method today. I would urge those who know how to use the computer to teach their family members...or failing that, write the letters for them as they sit with you. I am in touch with my daughter almost daily, which is a great reassurance to both of us. Thanks, and I didn't mean to "run on." Keep reminding people with your wonderful lens.

My Husband is in the Army. Thank you so much for this page! I know that among our friends, it does not matter which you choose- it is the thought behind it. I think I would go with blue as I don't have the complexion for red and never discuss my political views as I confuse myself trying to figure out if any of them are telling the truth (I am leaning toward no on that)!

Some grocery stores also sell inexpensive care packages near the checkout (they ship it) all you have to do is pay for it and write a nice note to go with it!

Cool article here. I'd heard of wearing American colors on Friday but never knew which one it was. I'd opt to wear red, white and blue like @military wife. It's about supporting the soldiers out there, not picking parties.

I have worn red since 9/11. I bought my shirt on a military base. Blue I just heard of today. Neither is wrong as the point is to be supportive. But if I have to wear one it has and always will be red as that color is for the troops. Blue is for a lot of things and there is not even a shirt made to support the fact. You can buy red shirts online and the money will go to help the troops. Good luck deciding!

I think of our troops about everyday and am so thankful for what they do and have done for us all. Freedom doesn't come cheap, it comes at a great price. I don't need to wear a certain colors to show my support, but I guess if I worked along side co-workers...it would be kind of fun to do on Fridays.

Thank you for featuring Support Our Troops and Veterans here. I returned the kindness and am featuring What are Blue Fridays? on that lens.

Supporting our troops is supporting the very essence of the United States. Each service member is someone's father, mother, son, daughter, sister or brother. 'Freedom Isn't Free'. The legacy that we ALL inherited in the colors of OUR flag and all of our service men and women uphold, protect and support that legacy of Freedo, In our flag Red for the Blood so many have given, White for the purity of purpose and Blue for Valor of those who serve with pride, put their lives on the line. They/we do this for all, for OUR flag, OUR country. We certainly can make the statement of support for all they/we do. I'm retired USN, my husband is finishing up '30' , also USN, and my wonderful stepson is U.S. Army, boots on the ground in Afghanistan.
    I'll wear blue, every Friday.

    Linda,

I am a 33 year veteran of the Army and about to retire. I served in Afghanistan, where I lost a couple of buddies. As a career Soldier, I say, "Yes!, you can support Soldiers while opposing the war. The US military is an arm of US diplomacy, we're just the bloody end of it. When other means fail, the government uses the military to force our enemies to either return to dialogue, or face defeat in battle. The politicians control the military and we follow their orders. Understanding that the last person on earth to choose war is a Soldier, and that we only follow orders from our civilian leaders, why would you not support the sacrifice of those serving and especially their families? You can disagree with the administration, but you must support Soldiers. (Reply to Linda B - Chattanooga)

Only problem with blue is that many people wear blue ANYWAY - jeans if nothing else. If you want a visible statement, you'd pick a more inconvenient color - fuchsia, say, or chartruese.

This isn't to belittle what you're trying to do -- I opposed the invasion from the start, but I agree that our troops need and deserve all the support they can get. I just hope that folks who participate in this campaign also take time to write Congress and insist that our soldiers, veterans, and their families and communities get the resources that they need to rebuild their lives and undo the damage caused by the war.

    Pray:
Pray that they come home soon
Pray that they come home safe
Pray that they come home sane
Pray that people who sent them to war under false pretenses are held accountable
Pray that their families can get what they need
Pray that the long-suffering Iraqis can rebuild their country
Pray that the people who profit from war find a way to profit from peace instead
