Bluegrass Rocks!
Bluegrass music is a type of American roots music, that was inspired by immigrants, strongly rooted by Irish and Scottish immigrants who settled in Appalachia. Traditionally Bluegrass consisted of mostly stringed instruments, like the fiddle, banjo, mandolin, accoustic guitar, stand-up bass and a resonator guitar, popularily known as a dobro.
Modern Bluegrass often incorporates electrified instrumens, drums, harmonica, autoharp, piano and/or accordian. Bluegrass first became popular in the mid 1940's, and though no one person can claim credit for inventing it, Bill Monroe and his band the Blue Grass Boys, are most responsible for it's name.

Bluegrass Music is just Fun!
I grew up listening to bluegrass.
My parents were folk musicians during the 1970's, so I grew up with lots of bluegrass music in the house. Almost all of my best childhood memories are of groups of musicians jamming in the living room, the garage, and even the backyard. Our house was full of all kinds of music, but whenever all the musicians got done playing or practicing the latest songs they were working on...The music always eventually led back to good old fashioned bluegrass. Someone would break out the banjo and the feet would start stomping...it was a really fun atmosphere to grow up in.

Have I mentioned yet...
That I love banjo music.
Here is the thing about the banjo that makes it so great. It doesn't matter what the song is about, the singer could be singing about killing his family and hiding the bones, and if he's pickin' a banjo you still start tapping your toes and smiling, because it's the banjo!
The banjo makes a joyous sound, it sounds happy, regardless of what the song is really about.
I think they should play banjo music for depressed people, because you just can't stay depressed while you're listening to the banjo!
The banjo is just pass the jug, sing along, Foot Stompin Fun!

- I love Bluegrass, has to be one of my favourite genres. And like you said, anything with a banjo is awesome! My Dad used to always have this playing and then the Cohen Bros brought out O Brother Where Art Thou and man it just brought it all flooding back. Thanks so much for this lens, its great.

- Does the music from The Beverly Hillbillies count as bluegrass? If so, then that was my first exposure. But it was O Brother Where Art Thou that really brought it to my attention. Great lens, thanks for sharing.
