What is Bluejacking? How to Bluejack

Bluejacking used to be a fairly harmless trick that people would use to send messages to other people. Bluejacking uses the Bluetooth technology found in most modern mobile phones.

Blue jacking involves sending messages from your bluetooth device to other bluetooth enabled devices close to you (normally within a 10 metre range) and thereby surprising the recipient in the process. You do not need to know the recipients number in order to send the message.

How do I 'bluejack'?

Simple, create a new phonebook entry with the message that you want to send in the 'name' field. Then, in an area where you are likely to find someone with a bluetooth enabled device - shopping centre, train etc, send the message by selecting the 'send contact by bluetooth' option.
Your mobile phone will then search for any devices in the proximity. Simply choose a device from the list that it gives you and click send. The recipient will get a message asking if they wish to accept your 'contact' (containing the text you set earlier). Some mobiles will accept all incoming messages, others may be set to reject them.
Remember, in a busy area there may be many devices and the name of the devices may not give you an idea of who the person is that you are sending to - so be careful!

How has bluejacking evolved?

Bluejacking by mobile phone started off as a gimick. However, marketing companies soon latched on to the idea that they could target people using this technology. The great thing about bluetooth and its limited range on a mobile phone meant that advertisers could set up bluetooth devices next to advertising hoardings or in shops to broadcast messages to passers-by.
