Gifts for the Sustainability Conscious
It's hard to find the right gift sometimes.
When the recipient is sustainability-minded, it's even tougher. What can you give that's really meaningful? How do you know if what you're giving contributes to sustainability - or at the very least doesn't undermine it?

Look, no paper!
Amazon's kindle is a great way to read. Support sustainability by saying no to the paper, shipping, and warehousing used for conventional books.
Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps
Bronner's soaps can be used for a variety of applications outside the bath. As their site says, the liquid soaps may be used at varying strengths for laundry, general cleaning and degreasing, toothbrushing and even as an aftershave.
Castille soap is made from vegetable oil - as opposed to fat (animal) based soap or chemical detergents. That's two marks for the environment right away. They also use organic sources. While some organic farming is sustainable and some isn't, at least it's a step in the right direction.
Dr. Bronner's also believes in conscious capitalism and social responsibility. The company dedicates some of its profits to projects such as water wells in Ghana and orphanages in Haiti and China. It's also shared profit with its workers to the tune of $10,000 per year per employee for its warehousing positions.
People, Planet, Profit! That's sustainability!

Alternative Power
Using even a little renewable power is better than using none. Solar and wind are great ways to provide power for RVs, charge batteries, and run small devices completely off the grid.
If going alternative isn't an option, check out the Kill-a-Watt meter. You might be surprised at just how much power devices in your home draw when they're supposed to be off. You also might be pleasantly surprised at how efficient some devices really are.

How about fair trade jewelry?
Sustainability isn't just about ecology. Fair trade practices generally support the people bringing products to market.
What about donations?
One of the most wonderful gifts I've ever received was a donation to a cause I believe in.
If you're shopping for someone who truly has it all, consider making a donation in that person's name to a worthy cause. One of the most wonderful gifts I've ever received was a donation to a cause I believe in.
