The Blue Whale

Blue whales are the largest mammals, and possibly the largest animal of any kind to have lived on Earth. A 33-metre long, 190-tonne whale has been seen, but most are smaller than this.

Blues were hunted to the brink of extinction during the 20th Century, before being protected in the mid-1960s. The most recent abundance estimate for the Southern Hemisphere is 2,300 and there is evidence they are increasing annually by about 7%. There are no good estimates for numbers in other areas, but there is some evidence of a population increase in the North Atlantic.

Status: Endangered

Interesting Facts On Blue Whale

The biggest animal on Earth - much bigger than dinosaurs and twice bigger than other whales.

They eat 4 tonnes a day and that is equal to 64 000 burgers! They also can communicate with each other even if they are 1600 kilometers away.

It usually swim up to 10 km/h but they can go faster up to 32 km/h if threatened. They can swim so far up to 160 kilometer a day.

They can stay under water between 10 to 20 minutes and eat at the depth of 100 meter. They can blow their 'fountain' 10 meters high or the same as the height of a double-storey building.

100 years back there were many 100's of thousands of these giant creatures swimming through the Earths Oceans, unfortunately today their numbers have decreased dramatically in the the case of the giant blue whale, less than 10,00 of these majestic animals exist.

The whaling industry has destroyed the major populations due to their giant size and huge amount of blubber that can be gained from a single whale. Today, many of the whales are endangered species and hunting them is illegal in international waters. Unfortunately, even that does not stop many from hunting whales.

They have the heart as big as a Mini Cooper and weight 450 kilograms. Even humans can crawl in their arteries.

They can grow up to 100 feet or as twice the length of an express bus.

They are among the loudest animal on the planet. They can even capable of making a sound louder as a jet engine. (188 decibels)

They spend most of their time under the sea and rarely comes up the surface to fill in their lungs.

It's a shame how so many creatures like the dodos were hunted to extinction. Hopefully, we can conserve whales since they're such beautiful and majestic creatures.
