The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration

The addition of the double CD 'The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration' to my growing collection of Bob Dylan albums was a welcome one. It is truly a 'must-have' for any Dylan fan and is well worth the price.
Bob Dylan's influence on other music artists spanned a wide spectrum of musical genres. The tribute at Madison Square Gardens in 1992 captures this by bringing together a variety of musical talent crisscrossing the length and breadth of country, folk, R and B and rock music. Listening to the likes of Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Johnny Cash and Tracy Chapman paying tribute to Dylan through his own songs is a treat to the ear and serves us as a solid reminder of his status as the most influential singer/songwriter of the century.
The performances, in my opinion, are memorable and each artist does well to blend their brand of artistry with the songs. Beginning with John Mellencamp's rendition of "Like a Rolling Stone" and ending with a heart-wrenching performance of "Girl From The North Country" by Bob Dylan himself, the album never ceases to entertain.

Sinead O'Connor is Booed at, at the 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration For Her 'Insult' to the Vatican

Sinead O'Connor was to have sung "I Believe In You" from Bob Dylan's 'Slow Train Coming' album at the 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration but events took a bizarre twist when it was her turn to perform. The incident of her tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II a few months prior to the concert on a Saturday Night Live telecast was very fresh in people's minds. She was greeted with boos and jeers that seemed to have crippled her will to perform. Instead, she broke off into an impromptu version of Bob Marley's "War" with no backing instruments. The incident never made it onto the CD for obvious reasons.

Bob Dylan Performs "The Times They Are A-Changin' " at the White House

White HouseSome of the biggest music legends were part of "In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement" in February 2010 in observance of Black History Month. Bob Dylan was among those present for the White House event and performed his civil rights anthem, "The Times They Are A-Changin' ". The hypnotic, passionate and focused performance once again cemented the fact that Dylan was and still is the spokesperson for a generation.

Bob Dylan at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival

Bob Dylan played two Newport Folk Festivals in 1963 and 1964 prior to his controversial and provocative performance at the 1965 version of the event. Dylan, after performing three acoustic numbers including "All I Really Want to Do", rattled the very foundations that had propped him up as a 'folk' icon. Amplifiers, energized with electricity, belted out Dylan's voice as he performed the freshly released singles - "Maggie's Farm" and "Like a Rolling Stone". The King of Folk was boldly unapologetic about his 'betrayal' and sang as passionately as he had ever done before. Rumors have it that Pete Seeger, a folk-legend who was present backstage when Dylan's fire unfolded, ordered that the cables be cut and is rumored to have wielded an axe.

"Get that distortion out of his voice ... It's terrible. If I had an axe, I'd chop the microphone cable right now." ~Pete Seeger (1965 Newport Folk Festival)

Bob Dylan Performs "Maggies Farm" at the 2011 Grammy Awards

Bob DylanBob Dylan made a rare appearance at the Grammy's in its 53rd edition earlier this year alongside talented acts - Mumford & Sons and the Avett Brothers. The legendary singer/songwriter, who celebrated his 70th birthday on May 24th, performed his classic "Maggie's Farm" and did not disappoint. Indeed, a lot was said about his 'gravelly' voice and the resultant lack of clarity that made it almost impossible to figure out the words, but a lot was equally overlooked. In my opinion, if people were expecting a youthful Justin Bieber-like rendition, they were nothing more than 'hopefuls' sprouting from shoots in dreamland. Bob Dylan has always been in touch with reality and his showing at the Grammy's was no different. His presence more than made-up for the shortcomings in his crooning ability; he was passionate in delivering the song and was definitely not out to impress the wider world of music citizenry with vocal wonders. His truest fans delighted in the knowledge of the master's words and what the song stood for; and I'm almost certain that hundreds jumped onto their feet and sang along.

Bob Dylan's "Royal Albert Hall" Concert Live in 1966

Volume 4 of the Bootleg Series

Bob Dylan Live

Bob Dylan's famous "Royal Albert Hall" Concert of 1966 can be heard on the 4th volume of the 'Bootleg Series'. The concert never did occur at the Royal Albert Hall but at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester. Taken off his widely popular world tour in 1966, the concert begins with an acoustic set-list, followed by an electric list that becomes quite stormy and features the legendary verbal response from Dylan when an audience member yells "Judas". "I don't believe you (pause), you're a liar", says Dylan before 'Like a Rolling Stone" blasts from the stage. The album is a must-have for Dylan fans and reflects a perfect juxtaposition of Dylan's contrasting persona - the folk singer and the rocker.

Bob Dylan at George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh

Bob Dylan made an appearance at George Harrison's 1971 "Concert for Bangladesh" and captivated audiences with passionate performances of some of his most famous songs. The appearance at the benefit concert also highlighted the importance the 'King of Folk' attached to the need to give back to society in a positive way. Among a noteworthy list of music legends including the likes of Ravi Shankar, Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, Billy Preston and Ringo Starr, Dylan engaged audiences with hits such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Just Like A Woman". The concert was reproduced in album form and won 'Album of the Year' at the 1973 Grammy Awards.

Bob Dylan Concert Posters

Amazon.com has some interesting Bob Dylan concert posters available that are worth checking out. I particularly like the Dylan-Garcia poster; it's timeless and has that historical aura about it. The stuff of legend, I must say! But that's not all. The 1963 Sportsworld concert Bob Dylan-Joan Baez poster has a unique edge and would be an interesting addition to a Dylan fans collection of Dylan memorabilia. I have posted links to these items and much more just below -

Bob Dylan was a Remarkable Poet

If you like poetry, feel free to visit my poetry blog and embark on a journey with me.

Poet's World of Rhyme 'n' Words
Almost a decade after I first began taking the craft seriously, I've decided to look back into the past and recreate the adventure, from the first poem I wrote (with serious intent) to my most recent creation. Through the course of this journey, I will introduce you to some great poet-friends that I have made over the years, all of whom are terrific writers in their own right. This blog is all about the poetry. If you're a beginning poet; a well-established one; a reader, a friend, a well-wisher or a stranger, hop-in for the ride, on wheels of words and fuel of rhyme.

Let me know what you think of these amazing Dylan concerts

  • Auntie-M May 17, 2012 @ 1:42 am | delete
I heard Dylan's daughter once say that her father's voice resonated with deep undertones, a quality that never got picked up by microphones.

All Dylan has to do is show up and that's the way its always been for his fans....I've been one since the 60's but have never heard him live. I had never seen the Sinead clip, what a tortured soul. An excellent tribute to an icon of our times for decades.
