Bobby Orr: The Boston Bruins Legendary Defenseman

Bobby Orr totally smashed all previous highwater marks for defensemen in scoring and became the only NHL defenseman to lead the league in scoring, a feat he accomplished twice.

Orr's style of play completely revolutionized the game of hockey. Before his arrival in the NHL, defensemen rarely ventured into the offensive zone and the thought of a defenseman actually leading a rush to the opposition's net almost unheard of. Orr was also a solid defensive player, an 8-time Norris Trophy winner as best defenseman.

Other defensemen may have passed Bobby Orr's offensive statistics, but the question remains: if not for the injuries to his knees, how much more spectacular could the career of Bobby Orr truly have been?

Bobby Orr - A True Hockey Legend

Career stats:
Goals 270
Assists 645
Points 915

All in only 657 games.

He truly changed the game as played by defencemen and his style and playmaking skills are emulated to this day.

Orr At The 2011 Stanley Cup Finals In Boston

Bobby Orr rallies the Bruins faithful

Game 4 of the 2010-11 Stanley Cup finals and Bobby Orr is there waving a banner with Horton's name and number to rally the Bruins faithful. Boston beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-0.

NHL Scouts Take Notice of 12-year-old Hockey Phenom

It was at a 1960 bantam hockey tournament in Gananoque, Ontario that Orr first caught the eye of NHL scouts as a 12-year-old.

Every scout couldn't help but notice Orr's dominance and began aggressively pursuing the talented young player.

The Boston Bruins immediately decided to subsidize the town's minor hockey program, hoping to curry favour with the Orrs for the day that Bobby would be eligible to sign a contract with their organization.

Every one of the NHL teams scouted the youthful Orr who, on Labour Day 1962 at the tender age of 14, chose to sign with the Boston Bruins' organization. Orr felt that the Bruins were a team of the future. "They were re-building and I wanted to be part of that building program." Bobby saw the Bruins as his best and quickest route to the NHL.

BOBBY ORR Boston Bruins 1974 CCM Vintage Throwback Away NHL Hockey Jersey

I had a Bobby Orr hockey jersey when I was a kid and I'm going to get one again. Hopefully for Christmas (Mom are you reading this?). Any Bruins fan or Bobby Orr fan should have one of these for those occasions when a jersey just says it all.

We have Jersey Days at work where we get to wear whatever jersey we want. Some people wear hockey jerseys, football jerseys while others wear baseball jerseys (one guy wore a soccer jersey last time). But having a vintage jersey of Bobby Orr just says you know who the best player was without having to say anything.

Searching for Bobby Orr

The book every hockey fan has been waiting for; the story of the elusive Bobby Orr, one of the legends from the glory days of the NHL.

Searching for Bobby Orr chronicles Orr's life from his humble beginnings, skating along a frozen river in Parry Sound, Ontario, to the height of his career as the league's top-scoring defenseman, who shot the goal that won the Boston Bruins the Stanley Cup.

Orr also had his lows. He will forever be known as a key figure in the Alan Eagleson scandal and for the injuries that forced him into early retirement.

In Searching for Bobby Orr, Stephen Brunt gives us insight into life and times of bobby Orr and in doing so reveals game and a country in transition.

Bobby Orr Hall of Fame in Parry Sound Ontario

Parry Sound, Ontario recognized their native son Bobby Orr by opening the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame in 2003. Surrounded by friends and family, at the opening Orr stated: "This is probably the most difficult thing I've ever had to do - to stand here and tell you how I feel. I've been a very lucky guy. I played on championship teams. I played for Canada. I've won some awards and I'm very proud of those accomplishments. But I don't think there's anything greater than to come home and to be recognized at home."

Orr then remembered his grandmother and mother, two of his greatest fans and personal support. "I know they're watching," Orr said, pausing to keep his emotions under control. The crowd clapped appreciatively at Bobby's deep affection for his mother and grandmother. "I know how thrilled they'd be."

Before introducing his wife Peggy, with whom he celebrated his 30th wedding anniversary in September 2003, his oldest son Darren and Darren's wife Chelsea, Orr pronounced July 18, 2003, " ... the most marvelous day of my life! I am so thrilled."

Here's a link to the website for the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame.

Orr Versus Gretzky?

Oh yeah...and Bobby Orr was a DEFENSEMAN!

Both Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky are arguably the best players in National Hockey League history. One major difference was that Orr played defense while Gretzky was a forward. Orr was the points leader twice, which in itself is a rare feat, but he is the only defenseman to ever lead the NHL in points and win the Art Ross Trophy, something he did twice!

I've been a fan of Orr since I was a tyke. Only got to see him play once against the Maple Leafs in the playoffs (Bruins won in OT). Hard to believe it's 30 years since he hung up his skates.
