Materials used for PCB

For conductive paths, almost always is used a thin layer of copper.

For mechanical support and isolation is used insulating dielectric laminated together with epoxy resin prepreg. On top of that, this board is coated with a solder mask. This mask is tipiccaly green, but other colors are also available: blue, yellow, red, ....

Dielectrics are selected depending on isolation requirements.
Polytetrafluoroethylene, FR-4, FR-1, CEM-1 or CEM-3.
FR-2 (Phenolic cotton paper)
FR-3 (Cotton paper and epoxy)
FR-4 (Woven glass and epoxy)
FR-5 (Woven glass and epoxy)
FR-6 (Matte glass and polyester)
G-10 (Woven glass and epoxy)
CEM-1 (Cotton paper and epoxy)
CEM-2 (Cotton paper and epoxy)
CEM-3 (Woven glass and epoxy)
CEM-4 (Woven glass and epoxy)
CEM-5 (Woven glass and polyester).

PCB - Printed circuit boards

PCB is used to mechanically support and electrically connect electronic components

Printed circuit board or PCB, is used to mechanically support and electrically connect electronic components by using conductive traces. This traces are copper sheets laminated onto a non-conductive substrate.

PCA - printed circuit assembly or
PCBA printed circuit board assembly
is a PCB with assembled electronic components

PCB connects electronic components like resistors, capacitors, semiconductors on a easy, inexpensive way. If proprely done, it can bi also higly reliable. This way, they are really good for high-volume production.

PCB design, assembly and quality control are defined in standards that are published by the IPC organization.

Patterin PCB - Printed circuit board

Patterning (etching)

Printed circuit boards are made by etching unwanted copper, wich is over the entire substrat. This way, we leave only desired copper traces from one component pad to another.

Most known methods, to remove nwanted copper are:

1. We use etch-resistant inks to protect the copper foil, where we want to have a trace. Than we remove the unwanted copper by etching.
2. Another way to protect wanted copper is with photomask and then we remove other copper by chemical etching. Photomask can be prepeared from CAM (computer-aided manufacturing software) data.
3. Two or three-axis mechanical milling system can be used to mill away the unwanted copper foil from the substrate. This machine is also known as a PCB Prototyper, because it is very suitable for making of prototypes. The machine uses data generated in PCB design software and stored in HPGL or Gerber file format.

Other way is to add copper, where we want traces. This is called Additive processe. We apply reverse mask and plate the copper onto the board in the unmasked areas. This way we easily add copper to desired thickness.

At Bobebo you can get double sided, multilayer and even flexible PCB-s.

Exposed conductor plating and coating

Bare copper oxidizes very quickly. Therefore we plate the places to which components will be mounted. In the past, copper was plated with solder by hot air solder levelling (HASL). But this solder has tin-lead alloy, and nowadays solder compounds must achieve compliance with the RoHS directive in the EU. This means no ore very restrict use of lead.

Most common lead-free compounds is SN100CL ( 99.3% tin, 0.7% copper, 0.05% nickel, and 60ppm germanium).

Other platings used are:
OSP (organic surface protectant)
immersion silver (IAg)
immersion tin
electroless nickel with immersion gold coating (ENIG)
direct gold.

Connectors on the edges of the PCB-s are very often covered with gold.

Bobebo can offer:
1. (HASL) Tin/Lead hot air solder level;
2. (HASL) Lead-free hot air solder level;
3. Immersion Tin;
4. ENIG (Electroless Nickel & Immersion Gold);
5. OSP (Organic Solder Preservatives);
6. Immersion Silver;
