Introduction
Bob's story is that of an archetype, which is why it continues to have such a powerful and ever-growing resonance: it embodies political repression, metaphysical and artistic insights, gangland warfare and various periods of mystical wilderness. And his audience continues to widen: to westerners Bob's apocalyptic truths prove inspirational and life-changing; in the Third World his impact goes much further. Not just among Jamaicans, but also the Hopi Indians of New Mexico and the Maoris of New Zealand, in Indonesia and India, and especially in those parts of West Africa from wihch slaves were plucked and taken to the New World, Bob is seen as a redeemer figure returning to lead this
In the clear Jamaican sunlight you can pick out the component parts of which the myth of Bob Marley is comprised: the sadness, the love, the understanding, the Godgiven talent. Those are facts. And although it is sometimes said that there are no facts in Jamaica, there is one more thing of which we can be certain: Bob Marley never wrote a bad song. He left behind the most remarkable body of recorded work. "The reservoir of music he has left behind is like an encyclopedia," says Judy Mowatt of the I-Threes. "When you need to refer to a certain situation or crisis, there will always be a Bob Marley song that will relate to it. Bob was a musical prophet."
The tiny Third World country of Jamaica has produced an artist who has transcended all categories, classes, and creeds through a combination of innate modesty and profound wisdom. Bob Marley, the Natural Mystic, may yet prove to be the most significant musical artist of the twentieth century.

Biography
Bob Marley started his career with the Wailers, a group he formed with Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston in 1963. He married Rita Marley in February 1966, and it was she who introduced him to the Rastafari movement. In 1969 Bob, Tosh and Livingston fully embraced the Rastafari movement, which would have a great influence on Marley's music in particular and on reggae music in general.
The Wailers collaborated with Lee Scratch Perry, resulting in some of the Wailers' finest tracks including "Soul Rebel", "Duppy Conquerer", "400 Years" and "Small Axe". This collaboration ended bitterly, however. The Wailers found out that Perry, thinking the records were his, sold them in England without their consent. This, however, brought the Wailers' music to the attention of Chris Blackwell, the owner of Island Records.
Blackwell immediately signed the Wailers and produced their first album, "Catch a Fire". This was followed by "Burnin'", featuring tracks as "Get Up Stand Up" and "I Shot the Sheriff" (Eric Clapton's cover of that song reached #1 in the US).
In 1974 Tosh and Livingston left the Wailers to start solo careers. Marley later formed the band "Bob Marley and the Wailers", with his wife Rita as one of three backup singers called the I-trees. This period saw the release of some groundbreaking albums, such as "Natty Dread", "Rastaman Vibration".
In 1976, during a period of spiraling political violence in Jamaica, an attempt was made on Marley's life, and he left for England, and lived in self-exile for around two years. In England "Exodus" was produced, and it remained on the British charts for 56 straight weeks. This was followed by another successful album, "Kaya". These successes introduced reggae music to the western world for the first time, and established the beginning of Marley's international status.
In 1977 Marley had himself checked by a doctor when a wound in his big toe would not heal completely, and more tests revealed that he had a form of skin cancer called malignant melanoma. This is usually contracted by Europeans and can be hereditary.
It is widely believed, therefore, that Bob inherited the disease from his father, who also apparently suffered from it. He refused to have his toe amputated as his doctors recommended, claiming it contradicted his Rastafarian beliefs, although some claim that the main reason behind his refusal was the possible negative impact on his dancing skills.
The cancer was kept secret from the general public, and Bob continued working. Returning to Jamaica in 1978, he continued work and released "Survival" in 1979, followed by a successful European tour. In 1980 he participated at the independence ceremony of Zimbabwe, being the only foreign artist invited.
It was a time for great success for Marley, and he started an American tour to reach blacks in the US. He played two shows at Madison Square Garden, but collapsed while jogging in NYC's Central Park on September 21, 1980. The cancer he ignored earlier had finally caught up with him, and it had spread to his brain, lungs and stomach. Bob Marley died in a Miami hospital on May 11, 1981. He was only 36 years old.

Introduction To Reggae
Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. While sometimes used in a broader sense to refer to most types of Jamaican music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that originated following on the development of ska and rocksteady.
Reggae is based on a rhythmic style characterized by accents on the off-beat, known as the skank. Reggae is normally slower than ska but faster than rocksteady. Reggae usually accents the second and fourth beat in each bar, with the rhythm guitar also either emphasising the third beat or holding the chord on the second beat until the fourth is played. It is mainly this "third beat", its speed and the use of complex bass lines that differentiated reggae from rocksteady, although later styles incorporated these innovations separately.
Introduction To The Wailers
The Wailers were a ska, rocksteady, and reggae group formed in Kingston, Jamaica in 1963, consisting of Bob Marley, Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, and Cherry Smith.
They were called variously The Teenagers, The Wailing Rudeboys, The Wailing Wailers, and finally The Wailers. By 1966, Braithwaite, Kelso, and Smith had left the band, leaving the trio of Livingston, Marley and Tosh.
Some of The Wailers most notable songs were recorded together with Lee "Scratch" Perry and his studio band, The Upsetters. In the early 1970s, The Upsetters members Aston "Family Man" Barrett and his brother Carlton (Carlie) Barrett Lee Scratch Perry Interview, New Musical Express, 17 November 1984, formed the Wailers Band, the backing band of The Wailers.
The Wailers recorded such groundbreaking reggae songs as, "Simmer Down", "Trenchtown Rock", "Nice Time", "Stir It Up", "Get Up, Stand Up", and many others.
The Wailers broke up in 1974, with each of the three main members going on to pursue solo careers. Bob Marley went on to international fame with Bob Marley & The Wailers (with the Wailers Band as the backing band and the I Threes as the backing vocalists). Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer each enjoyed considerable solo success, as reggae music continued to gain in popularity throughout the 70's and 80's. They were supported by their respective backing bands, Word, Sound and Power and The Solomonic Orchestra.
Most of the group's members have since died. Marley died in 1981, Tosh in 1987, Braithwaite in 1999, and recently Smith in 2008.Palm Beach Post - Ermine Cherry Dempsey-Barker, former member of the Wailers, dies (October 12, 2008) Bunny Wailer and Beverley Kelso are the only surviving original members of the group.
Introduction To Rastafari
The Rastafari movement is a monotheistic, Abrahamic, new religious movement that has arisen from Judaism and Christianity."Dread Jesus": A New View of the Rastafari Movement It emerged in the 20th century, predominantly in Jamaica. Its adherents are known as Rastafarians, or Rastas for short. The movement is sometimes referred to as "Rastafarianism", but this term is considered derogatory and offensive by some Rastas, who dislike being labelled as an "ism".Encyclopedia of African and African-American Religions p. 263 by Stephen D. Glazier, 2001
Rastafari is not a highly organized religion; it is a movement and an ideology. Many Rastas say that it is not a "religion" at all, but a "Way of Life".[http://books.google.com/books?id=t-VVY9-aVYoC&pg=PA151&dq=rastafari+%22way+of+life%22+religion] Most Rastas do not claim any sect or denomination, and thus encourage one another to find faith and inspiration within themselves, although some do identify strongly with one of the "mansions of Rastafari" ? the three most prominent of these being the Nyahbinghi, the Bobo Ashanti and the Twelve Tribes of Israel.
The name Rastafari is taken from Ras Tafari, the pre-regnal title of Haile Selassie I, composed of Amharic Ras (literally "Head," an Ethiopian title equivalent to Duke), and Haile Selassie's pre-regnal given name, Tafari. Rastafari are generally distinguished for asserting the doctrine that Haile Selassie I, the former, and final, Emperor of Ethiopia, is the incarnation of God, called Jahthe Rasta name for God incarnate, from a shortened form of Jehovah found in in the King James Version of the Bible or Jah Rastafari. However, there are other groups, or mansions (sects) also claiming the name of Ras Tafari, who believe that Haile Selassie I is not the second coming and that Jesus Christ is the only Messiah.
The Rastafari movement encompasses themes such as the spiritual use of cannabisDread, The Rastafarians of Jamaica, by Joseph Owens ISBN 0-435-98650-3The Ganja Complex: Rastafari and Marijuana by Ansley Hamid (2002) and the rejection of western society (called Babylon, in reference more to the metaphoric Babylon of Christianity than to the historical Mesopotamian city-state). It proclaims Africa (also "Zion") as the original birthplace of mankind, and embraces various Afrocentric social and political aspirations such as the sociopolitical views and teachings of Jamaican publicist, organizer, and black nationalist Marcus Garvey (also often regarded as a prophet).
Today, awareness of the Rastafari movement has spread throughout much of the world, largely through interest generated by reggae music?most notably, that of Jamaican singer/songwriter Bob Marley. By 1997, there were around one million Rastafari faithful worldwide.Chanting Down Babylon p. 1 About five to ten percent of Jamaicans identify themselves as Rastafari.

Words Of Wisdom
Until the philosophy which hold one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned, everywhere is war. And until there are no longer first-class and second-class citizens of any nation, until the color of a man's skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes. And until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race, there is war.
