Drive Though Burgers in the 50's
I always ordered the famous double-decker cheeseburger and added two strips of bacon and a slice of pineapple. When I think about it, I can still taste the special sweet relish that was their signature ingredient on this very special sandwich. A lens full of memories for me, and I hope for you also.....

My Big Boy Experience
The Big Boy Burger was born in Glendale in 1936, the brainchild of Bob Wian. I actually went to high school with his son, Bob Wian Jr. - he was a grade behind me at Glendale High. Bob's was famous for it's unique double-decker hamburger, which Bob came up with from a special request by a frequent customer. It became the restaurant's signature feature from then on. The success of the Glendale establishment caused Bob to open the Burbank branch in 1949 and immediately became a key site in Angeleno fast-food folklore. Bob Hope was a frequent visitor and various others from The Beatles to David Lynch to The Beach Boys, it seems like everybody who's ever been anybody has indulged in a Big Boy meal at least a time or two. When I worked in Burbank in the early 60's I would frequently do the drive-in lunch thing and when I worked as an artist for the film studios in the late 70's thru 90's I would do it all over again.

Bob's Big Boy and Cars
It is difficult to think of Bob's Big Boy restaurants without thinking of cars. Probably because of the "drive in" aspect. There was a drive through loop at the Glendale diner that made it even more interesting, because you could watch the cars and people as they made the loop and then came back past you. It gave you a better view of both the cars and the girls that occupied them. Of course you had to wash and wax your vehicle before performing this ritual.

Even Jay Leno Hangs Out Here......
Yes, even Jay Leno hangs out here. I worked for Jay at NBC for awhile doing some art work for his show. He has the ultimate car collection that used to be housed in an airplane hanger at Lockheed Airport in Burbank. Bob's hosts car aficionados on Friday nights and there is an incredible assortment of autos from all over the Los Angeles area.
