Boddingtons - A Brief History
The Boddingtons family, Strangeways, Whitbread & Interbrew
The Strangeways brewery was established in 1778 by two grain merchants Thomas Caister and Thomas Fray. The location was attractive to the pair due to it being on the outer edge of the Manchester border, and therefore exempt from a tax on the grinding of grain which existed in the city.Henry Boddington became involved with the brewery in 1832, by the time he was 34 he was a partner in the business and within 5 years he owned it.
During the late 1800's after a series of brewery acquisitions and extending the Strangeways site, Boddingtons had become the largest brewery in Manchester.
During the second world war the Strangeways Brewery suffered extensive damage in an air raid and production of Boddingtons ceased for several months. After the war the brewery was modernised, and remained under control of the Boddington family until 1989 when it was purchased by Whitbread.
By 1994 production of Boddingtons had grown to 600,000 barrels per year under the influence of Whitbread. It was at this time that the iconic Boddingtons marketing began to increase demand for the beer known as "The Cream of Manchester".
In 2000 Whitbread was taken over by Interbrew.

The End of Strangeways
The End of an era ... Boddingtons brewed outside Manchester
Interbrew closed the Strangeways brewery in February 2005 after 226 years and production of cask Boddingtons was moved a short distance away to the Hyde's brewery in Moss Side. Other production from the brewery was shared between Preston, Lancashire and Magor, South Wales and nearly 60 people lost their jobs. There had been much opposition to the closure and many people were unhappy when Boddingtons advertisments continued to include the "Cream of Manchester" slogan.

i want to say how much your canned beer has changed for the worst ! I find it no longer is creamy and therefore is now inferior to other brands such as John Smiths and therefore will be reluctant to buy it in future !What a pity you have changed the formula and now it is no longer appealing !!
