Bodnant Garden - A Great Garden

An introduction to Bodnant Garden - a great Welsh garden

Bodnant Garden in North Wales is one of the most beautiful gardens in the UK and is world-famous. It comprises lawns, terraced gardens and is noted for its botanical collections and wide range of plants.

The setting is very beautiful and the property also has splendid views over the Conwy Valley and towards Snowdonia.

One of my most vivid memories from childhood is of the first time I walked into the very famous Laburnum Tunnel. I've never seen any other garden do it better since.

The gardens are a National Trust property and are managed for the National Trust by Lord Aberconwy. The garden reopens after its winter break on Saturday 26th February 2011

Bodnant Gardens in brief

Bodnant Garden was begun in 1875. The garden covers 80 acres. Most of the garden was first laid out by Henry Davis Pochin, a successful industrial chemist, from 1874 onwards until his death in 1895. It's been looked after by four generations of the Aberconway family.

The garden is divided into two parts.
* The upper level (around the house) features huge Italianate terraces, specimen trees and formal lawns.
* Paths descend to a lower level called "The Dell" which has with a wooded valley, stream and wild garden. Included within the Dell are the Old Mill, the mill pond with the mill race and an attractive spillway waterfall into the River Hiraethlyn which runs through the dell.

In 2000 Bodnant Garden was voted the winner of "The National Trust Gardens Award" by National Trust members and visitors.

It's also been voted "The Favourite Garden in the Country" by Daily Telegraph readers

The Garden and Pavilion Tea-room are managed on behalf of the National Trust by the Hon. Michael McLaren QC

Admission is free to card-carrying members of the National Trust and/or the Royal Horticultural Society

About Bodnant Garden

The famous laburnum arch is a curved walk about 55 metres long which was designed and built by Pochin.

It's situated near the entrance and although wide can become crowded with visitors at busy times.

In late May and early June the arch is covered with laburnum which produces a magnificent cascade of long yellow flowers through the treliis. In sunlight the light underneath the laburnum is tinted yellow!

George - the Bodnant Gardens Peacock

George was Bodnant Gardens resident peacock and loved to fan out his tail feathers for visitors if they got out their cameras.

Sadly George has now passed away. He's buried beneath the office window, next to his former mate Mildred the Peahen. This is a video taken by a vistior of him providing his usual show of plumage.
