Olive Oil, Grapeseed Oil and Jojoba Oil Keeps Skin Healthy During the Winter Months

Olive oil moisturizes dry skin and can relieve itching. It helps our skin to make collagen, elastin, proteoglycans and glycoprotiens. Olive oil is filled with chlorophyll, protein, minerals, vitamins, and essential fatty acids.

Grapeseed oil is low in saturated fats and rich in vitamins and minerals, making it a favorite oil in cosmetics and soaps.

Grapeseed oil has a high linoleic aid content and contains essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals proteins, and GLA which gives good moisturizing and nourishing properties. Its slightly astringent property makes it a popular formula for oily and acne-prone skin. It is known to help strengthen tissue cells, preserve natural skin moisture, and leave the skin soft and smooth without feeling greasy.

Grapeseed oil has a short shelf life. Reports of less than 6 months are not uncommon, so purchase in small amounts, and store it in a cool dry place in a colored bottle.

Jojoba (pronounced ho-HO-ba) oil is different from other vegetable oils. Rather than being an oil, it is actually a polyunsaturated liquid wax made of fatty acids as well as esters and alcohols. As a wax, jojoba is especially useful when moisture control and protection is required.

Jojoba is the organic oil most similar to the oil that is secreted by our own skin. It makes a great moisturizer for any type of skin.

The easiest way that I find to apply body oils is in the shower. Just one drop for each part of the body works with the water in your shower to keep your skin soft and hydrated. However, these oils make the bottom of your tub slippery. Ironic isn't it? The plant oils that is not oily to your skin is oily on your tub?

The best way to apply body oils, lotions or any kind of moisturizer is right when you get out of the shower. Moisturizers are made to trap moisture that's already on your skin rather than hydrating dry skin. By applying moisturizers to your skin within one minute after drying off you are trapping the moisture on your skin from the shower. You are also using less product this way.

Recipe for Radiant Beauty

by Rosemary Gladstar

The recipes that follow are among my favorites. Most are my personal creations; a few have been the creative suggestions of others. Many of these recipes came to me in those moments of inspiration when I was out among the flowers. Others I've labored long over to get the exact proportions and effects. And some of them were garnered from students, who often took a simple suggestion I made and added the oh-so-perfect ingredient to create a product of excellence.

ROSE WATER

Although distilling fresh rose petals (Rosa spp.) generally produces rose water, the following method is simple and effective, and it ensures a perfect rose water every time. Be sure you use fresh roses that have just begun to open; they are at their prime and will yield the strongest water. The more fragrant the roses, the stronger the scent of the rose water. Using roses that have been sprayed with insecticides will result in the toxins being extracted into the water. (Rose water is used as a cleanser for dry skin. It also brightens dry, mature and wrinkled complexions, and soothes sensitive skin at any age.)

3 parts witch hazel extract
1 part distilled water
Fresh, organically grown roses or rose petals

Mix the witch hazel with the distilled water. Place the fresh roses in a quart jar. Completely cover the roses with the witch hazel mixture, adding enough extra that the witch hazel mixture rises 2 to 3 inches above the flowers. Cover tightly and place in a warm, shaded area. Let the mixture sit for 2 to 3 weeks.

Strain out the roses and rebottle the water for use. Rose water does not need refrigeration, but storing it in a cool place will prolong its shelf life.

Meadowfoam Oil: A Featured Product Of Mountain Rose Herbs

The meadowfoam plant is native to northern California, southern Oregon, Vancouver Island, and British Columbia. Meadowfoam oil contains over 98% long-chain fatty acids, and also has higher quality triglyceride levels when compared to other vegetable oils. It is moisturizing and capable of adhering and staying on the skin. When applied to the skin, Meadowfoam oil forms a moisture barrier and will assist the skin with preventing moisture loss.

Meadowfoam oil has these beneficial characteristics:

*Moisturizes the skin
*Rejuvenates and adds shine to hair
*Non-greasy feeling, soaks into the skin easily
*Reduces wrinkles and signs of aging

Apply Meadowfoam oil to your skin alone or combine meadowfoam oil with a body butter (recipe to follow) such as cocoa butter, illipe butter, shea butter, kokum butter or mango butter.

Body Butter Recipe
1 part body butter
2 parts Meadowfoam oil

Melt body butter in a double boiler. Add meadowfoam oil. Mix together until mixture is heated through. When mixture is cool pour into a container of your choice.
Note: If body butter mixture is not pliable enough or is too thick add meadowfoam oil until desired consistency is achieved.

Wild Salmon Bisque: A Recipe For Soft Skin

Moisturize your skin from the inside out!

I found this recipe on the internet last winter. It is delicious and it is soooooooo easy to make!

Skin So Soft - Wild Salmon Bisque

Vitamin A rich low-fat milk plumps up your skin's epithelial cells -- which, if you get a little low on the nutrient, can shrivel up, highlighting wrinkles and rough patches.* Salmon** is packed with omega-3s, which researchers have found also help keep skin healthy and prevent puffiness.

Wild Salmon Bisque

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 10 minutes

1 Tbsp canola oil
3/4 c onion, finely chopped
1/2 c bottled roasted red pepper***, drained and chopped
2 tsp herbes de Provence****
1/4 c flour
1/4 c cold water
5 c 1 percent milk
2 pouches (6 oz each) wild pink salmon
1/4 tsp Tabasco sauce
1/8 tsp salt
1/2 slice whole-wheat bread, toasted, cut into 1/4" cubes

1. Heat oil in saucepan over medium-low heat. Add onion, red pepper, and herbs. Sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.

2. In bowl, whisk flour and water until smooth. Gradually add 1 cup milk and whisk. Add mixture to saucepan with remaining 4 cups milk. Cook, stirring, until mixture bubbles and thickens.

3. Add salmon, Tabasco, and salt. Reduce heat to low. Simmer 5 minutes.

4. In a food processor or with a hand-held blender, process the soup into a coarse puree. Garnish with croutons.

Makes 4 servings. Per serving: 314 calories, 9.5 g fat (3 g saturated), 522 mg sodium, 27 g carbs, 1 g fiber, 29 g protein

*Note: I use 2% milk for this recipe.
**You have to use smoked salmon for this recipe. Using plain canned salmon doesn't give the soup a lot of flavor. Take it from me. I am speaking from experience here!
***Note: The first time I made this recipe I bought the roasted red pepper in a bottle (which can be pretty costly) from the grocery store. I used some of the red pepper and stored the rest of the bottle in the refrigerator. Two weeks later when I wanted to make this soup again, there was mold growing in the bottle! Now, I roast my own red pepper for this recipe. I learned to do this from an article that I found on FoodNetwork.com.
****Tip Herbes de Provence is another blend, including dried rosemary, basil, sage, and thyme. If you have two or three of those on hand, you can use them instead.
