Body Painting with Makeup or Liquid Latex

Body painting is one of the oldest and most universal forms of body art

Body painting can camouflage, enhance features, create the illusion of other textures and more.  Theatrical or costume body painting often uses makeup or liquid latex.  Each has its own effects and length of duration.  Body paint can involve just the face or it can be a full-body design. You can use it to accent a costume or be the entire costume if you wish.

Face Painting How-To Books and Paint

When working with face paints, I like to use the cheap triangle-shaped makeup sponges you get from beauty supply stores, a variety of flat-tipped paintbrushes and my own fingers. Remember to do a practice run ahead of time if you need to work out a design you've never painted before, or if you are totally new to face painting. If you are worried about ruining your good towels, get some cheap ones at a thrift store.

If you are working with oil-based makeup, remember you will need cold cream or a face oil to help get all the makeup off your face later, as well as a healthy amount of soap and water.

Face and Body Painting Kits and Sets

getting started easily

For face painting, makeup is applied with small brushes, soft sponges or the fingertips. Have some rags or washcloths on hand for cleaning fingers or makeup removal.

When doing body painting, make sure the room or space where you are going to be working is warm enough to keep your models comfortable. Putting down a fabric or plastic drop-cloth on the floor is a very good idea and is necessary if the floor is carpeted!

For bodies, 1"-2" brushes are good for large areas or base colors, with 1" or smaller brushes working better for details. Having a hair dryer on hand can help with getting detailed bits that need a lot of repainting to dry faster and keeps the models much warmer than using a fan. Watch out for having your painted model stand in front of a space heater as sometimes that will soften and melt the makeup, which can cause it to run and drip!

Face Painting In-Depth

Face painting can be done as part of a costume, to show your colors at a sporting event or as a fun activity for theme or kids parties. I recommend that beginners start out with water-based face paint as it's much easier to wear and wash off later.

For those of you who are getting into fancier effects, oil-based makeup that has been set properly will often offer more versatility in effects and wear longer without running or fading. However, if you're dealing with kids, stick with the water-based as the easier clean-up is essential.

Fun with Liquid Latex

For those who haven't tried it yet, liquid latex is a forumlation of rubber that self-vulcanizes at room temperature. When painted on, it forms a thin but flexible skin that can be worn as clothing, espeically if you build up a few layers.

This can permanently stain fabric, so if you're painting over underwear, expect the garments to be ruined. It can be painted on over unshaved skin, but if you're really hairy, shaving will make for a much nicer finish. You can also apply the thinnest application of skin lotion over body hair too. Avoid eyes, the nose and mouth as the latex contains ammonia, this degasses as the liquid dries.

It applies best with wide foam brushes. Painting each coat in a different direction (vertical, then horizontal) will make the latex more durable and give a smoother finish too. Some interesting effects can be made with more than one color, and remember, it's easier to paint a dark color over a lighter one than the other way round.

Once you are done, the latex must be "set" with either a coating of rubber polish (STP Son of a Gun, Black Beauty, etc) or the Liquid Latex Stardust powder so that it won't stick to itself and tear. Then, when you're ready to take it off, you just peel it right off the body. If you're careful you can even craft re-wearable gloves
