Tattoos: History and Rituals

Tattoos: History and Rituals

Tattoos have been becoming increasingly popular over the past few years. The many celebrities with their matching tattoos have helped this process along immensely. However, anyone thinking that tattoos are some hot new thing are quite mistaken. Tattoos have been around for centuries and have been used for a variety of purposes.

Tattoos have a long tradition with rituals amongst tribal people. Young men would often be tattooed to mark their rites of passage from boyhood to adulthood and to mark other transitions. The process of tattooing is deeply meaningful and contains many of the symbols associated with ritual such as blood, symbolic elements and the awakening of the astral body by the experience of pain.>More

Safety Tips

Tattoos: Safety Tips

Those who decide to take the plunge and get a tattoo need to consider safety. Remember, tattooing involves someone permanently affixing ink into your skin with a needle. If this isn't done correctly and cleanly then the risk of infection is quite high. That beautiful tattoo that you have been dreaming about isn't worth a trip to the hospital with septicemia.

One of the first things that people want to know about tattoos is how painful the process is going to be. This is hard to gauge because everyone has a different pain threshold. A good example is imagining a sting on top of a sun burn. Not pleasant but tolerable.

The next thing people want to know is who should be doing the Tattoo and what should they be looking for. Tattoos should only ever be given by licensed tattoo artists. Before agreeing to any treatment check the place out and make sure everything is legitimate.

Ask the following questions and make the following demands:
1. Ask if they use a brand new sterile needle every time.
2. Ask if all other tools that are involved in the tattooing process are either sterilized or disposable (and, of course, are they either sterilized or disposed of after each customer?)
3. Is everything personally laid-out for your tattoo? You don't want to share in a big communal bottle of ink with your fellow tattoo-lovers; you want little individual disposable containers of ink just for you. Latex gloves. Vaseline should be dispensed with disposable instruments - not by hand. Insist on this!
4. Insist on having non-disposable equipment sterilized with an autoclave (an apparatus which uses superheated steam under high pressure to sterilize instruments), not an ultra-sonic cleaner or a dunk in a tub of rubbing alcohol. Ask the tattoo artist if his autoclave is FDA-regulated. Anything else should be unacceptable to you.

If the place isn't spotlessly clean then look for another establishment. Most licensed and reputable tattoo artists will insist on this.

The majority of the time, getting a tattoo is completely safe. However, you need to do your homework and insist on clean sterile conditions. If you don't you could be in for some bad results.>More

Your Personal Decision

Tattooing is a very personal decision. People do it today for several reasons. Some as a method of self expression and others to use their bodies as art work. Many still recognize the ritualistic measures that are included in tattooing. When you open up and say yes to the tattooist, you are giving that person permission to inflict a permanent mark on the body while drawing blood causing pain in the process. All the elements of ritual can be seen here from the marking of the body very often with sacred symbols, the drawing of blood (life-force) and inducing pain which is seen by many as something spiritual.

Many today will seek tattoos with some kind of spiritual significance. This could be a sign of our times when we look for meaning in several different methods and force the more traditional methods of religious worship to the back seat. Some believe that they symbols themselves as well as the positioning on the body can help them get through many of lives challenges.

Tattooing today is immensely popular. The reasons for getting tattoos vary according to the person. With all of the designs and reasons for tattooing it is unlikely that tattooing will disappear anytime soon.>More

Get A Good Artist

A great looking tattoo is only a picture until you get a good tattoo artist.

Finding someone who knows what they are doing is nearly as essential as the safety and cleanliness. Remember, these are permanent marking and if they are not up to your expectations you will still have to wear it for the rest of your life.

In finding a good tattoo artist you should consider the following three things.
1. How good their work is.
2. How comfortable you feel around them.
3. Whether or not you can afford their services.

To judge how good their work is, ask to see samples. Watch them in action if possible. If they want your business bad enough they should oblige.

Getting recommendations from others can also be helpful but keep in mind that tastes will differ. What someone else considers good work may not match up with your idea. You're the one that has to wear this design.

Meeting the tattoo artist and having them talk you through the process is a good ay to get to know them. If they seem pushy or if there is something about them you don't like then find someone else. There are plenty of fish in the sea as the saying goes.

Finally, affordability is important. This is one instance where the cheapest may not be they best. Resist the urge to go for the least expensive option. Good tattoo artists don't come cheap. Going low budget could result in bad work or worse, illness and infection.

Finding a good tattoo artist isn't difficult. It just takes some patience and time. Don't be overcome by excitement. Take your time and get an artist you feel comfortable with. It will be worth it in the end.>More
