WATER - What Can You Say, We All Need Water!

Okay, so I wanted to do a lens on water! Specifically on the nutritional facts of drinking enough water to maintain a healthy body. I wanted to talk about how water affects your diet, weight loss, calories, fat, cholesterol, vitamin intake, your basic helath care.

Oh boy, did I find some interesting lens that were already built on squidoo. I'll share these with you along with more tidbits that I learned doing a bit of research. You know how it is when your focused on a topic, you're attracted to so many area that you never would have gone to, that's what happened to me.

This great picture was done by John Flinchbaugh, I found it on Flickr, it displays how I see our bodies compared to water. Excellent picture!!!

This was a very fun lens to make and I hope you'll enjoy it.

Why Water

Let me tell you why I think water is so vital

This a picture of my kids and a couple of their friends when we found water after we had been hiking in the mountians in Radium, B.C. It was one of those times that we left the campsite with a couple of water bottles to go on a short hike.

Two hours later, a couple miles away from the campsite, temperature's hitting around 35 C, climbing up and down on a switchback trail, these kids where total troopers, but crying for water.

We hit this creek half way home, it was down in a ridge, water never tasted so good, wet, cold and fresh from the mountain springs

Hiking back home was a lot easier, with everyone hydrated again, smiles where back and we enjoyed the walk home, just from having water again. Amazing!

We need water to keep our bodies cool in hot tempatures and hydrated during exercising otherwise we deplete this moisture from other sources in our bodies like our muscles and organs causing cramps, headaches to a point where we become lethargic. We see this in small children when they become sick and dehydrated, it can be fatal.

Moral of this story is to always have extra water on hand !!

The other day I was donating blood at the Red Cross Blood Bank. In the chair across from me was another lady who'd already been poked in one arm a few times, the nurse couldn't find a vein strong enough to hold the needle.

Then they tried the other arm and still could find the vein. Of course this freaked me out a little, so I asked my nurse what happened? This is when I learnt that if your body isn't hydrated enough your veins are like raisins they shrivel up to help force the blood through the body. When you are hydrated imagine your veins like fat juices grapes and it's easier for them to find a vein.

Water helps with all parts of our body, I'm not a scientist but I do know that over 70% of our body is water, if we don't replace the water we use when we breathe, sweat, urinate or whatever else we do to lose moisture through our organs (skin, hair), we will cause problems usually through a chronic illness or death.

Water Deficiency: Loss of body water amounting to 10% of the body weight impairs work performance and is associated with nausea, weakness, delirium, and hyperthermia. Signs of dehydration include poor skin turgor, skin tenting on the forehead, decreased urine output, concentrated urine, sunken eyes, dry mucous membranes in the mouth and nose, orthostatic blood pressure changes and tachycardia. Water losses exceeding 20% of body weight are life-threatening." courtesy of Feinberg Northwestern University

Water Tips of the Day

Here are a couple of tips about drinking 8 glasses of water a day

Several of the articles I read had very similar versions of the benefits of drinking eight 8oz glasses of water a day. One health guru commented that the actual amount of water a person should drink is 32oz (4 cups) for every 50 pounds of body weight. A 150 pound women then should drink 12 cups of water or 96 oz or about 3 liters.

Here's a list of other Tips that are very common. Are they a Myth or Not. Vote on the you've heard or like.

The Source of Life

BUT, it can also be The Source of Death

It's very hard to believe when you come from a country that takes water for granted, that some children have never tasted clean, clear water.

What we consider "dirty" water, other would walk miles for, and we flush our water down a drain to never neverland not thinking about the waste. Turning on the taps like we have a million gallons at our disposal, and we do!

I know it's hard for to change or to deny ourselves this luxury, but I would strongly suggest that we all think about conserving water.

If you can, watch this clip by Good and think about the water you have at your disposal.

Cold Sparkling Water Cooling that Hot Dry Sandy Taste

Have you ever been so thirsty that the puddles in the streets look like a bottle Perrier dripping with condensation ready to be poured into a tall glass with a slice of lemon???

Many times I've been busted on this. Not a very good thing when out hiking with my two kids, any water we find they get first. Not that I don't leave prepared, we always have our canteens/water bottles, we just have so much fun hiking and get distracted next thing you know we're further away from camp then we thought, hiking back always seems longer and dryer.

Can I Get You a Glass of Water?

Stop a minute and think about water

When you really think about water, what do you think about?

That you could have a glass, scotch on the rocks, ice cubes, you need to shower, going to the pool, your pet needs water, your lawn needs watering, washing your floors, windows, laundry, (okay I never think of that when I think of water) Inquiring minds would love to know.

At my house we have a well and the water is the best I've ever had and always ice cold even in the summer. As a result, I tend to drink it more than any other beverage. In fact, reading your lens has made me suddenly very thirsty. Great job. 5*

I think about how man has, throughout history, polluted the water and how even the far northern ice fields are melting so quickly that the animals are turning cannibalistic and the marine life is endangered. We need to get smart fast or we'll all be in trouble. A great lens that deserves 5*s for sure.

Some lenses are a little dry...not this one! Water can be a problem, too, like when it becomes polluted. See these images for instance.
