Bohol highlights tour

A daytrip to Bohol Island

After our wedding we spent a few days on the beaches of Panglao, a small island off the coast of Bohol. We did not do much, except for one single excursion: a one-day highlights tour of Bohol. We visited the famous Chocolate Hills, saw (and held) tarsiers, had our lunch on a floating restaurant on Loboc River, and passed by a few Bohol monuments.

This church is one of the oldest in the Philippines (second only to the San Agostin church in Manila, according to our guide). There is a small but interesting museum in the convent next to the church.

Our next stop was the view point overlooking the chocolate hills. These hills are what Bohol is famous for. In the dry season the hills become brown, looking like giant chocolates - hence the name.

When we visited, a few months after the dry season, the hills were already almost green again. Just some parts were still brown, as you can see in the photo above.

Floating restaurant, Loboc river, Bohol, PhilippinesAfter visiting the hills it was time for lunch. And on a highlights tour of Bohol that means: Time for the floating restaurants on the Loboc river.

On board of a small vessel, we had a buffet lunch, Philippine style, while we were entertained by a musician. The boat stopped for a while so that we could watch and listen to a group of people performing traditional Bohol folk music and dance, somewhere along the river.

Tarsiers

Tarsier in Bohol, Philippines

A tarsier is a small primate with large eyes. They live on only a few islands, including Bohol. They are nocturnal animals, and very shy, so they are hard to spot in the wild.

For tourists with limited time, there are tarsier parks where you are guaranteed to see tarsiers, and can even hold them.

On the photo you can see me holding one, giving you an idea of its size.

According to our guide, the blood compact was the first friendship treaty in the world between people of different races. The blood compact is still celebrated annually with a festival.

My wife is from Bohol. Have been there many times. I especially like hiking and mountain biking down the back roads and trails. Starting another vacation in the Philippines in about 3 weeks.

The chocolate hills of Bohol, the name and pics sound familiar. Perhaps I have seen pics of the hills in a magazine. Real nice page about bohol. I'd suggest breaking the text in paragraphs, so it matches the length of the pictures. Makes the Lens look more beautiful.
