Great ideas here! I love the adding food coloring to egg water to separate hard boiled from no boiled. Usually we just right on the carton HB. But sometimes I forget.

Boiling eggs may be an easy task but some people may find it too difficult to do. geez, it's true I know a lot of them hilarious as it may seem but no longer funny when they almost burn your house down LOL. I will find the time to show this to them. Very helpful lens. Good work.
  • gravityx9 Dec 13, 2010 @ 11:24 am | delete
yes, definitely helpful. It is really embarassing when trying to make deviled eggs and the shell sticks to the egg, or the yolk is under done. Your yummy lens has been added to a featured section of my
PLAYING WITH FOOD Lens! THUMBS UP!

Hey Eric! A lens the name Squidoo gives its one-page websites. Much like the lens in a camera or telescope, the idea is that the page provides a focused look at a topic.
  • EricMelanson Aug 6, 2009 @ 5:07 pm | delete
Why is everyone saying "lens"? what is that????
  • Nikita Kondraskov May 15, 2009 @ 11:30 am | delete
Painting them is a lot more fun.

Thank you! I was looking for my "every time I boil eggs" question - boil first or wait. So will go put eggs in and then boil. Doing a dozen deviled eggs for Thanksgiving. Thanks for the quick answer to an aggravating question!
  • SusanVillasLewis Oct 6, 2008 @ 5:17 pm | delete
Glad your latest egg boiling adventure turned out well! There's more of an art to it than people realize. :-)
  • Ges Oct 6, 2008 @ 3:12 pm | delete
Ah, that's where I've been going wrong - I wasn't putting enough water in the saucepan! I've just boiled an egg the proper way and am delighted with the results. Thank you so much :)

I love how you presented this, very well laid out!
Also, as far as boiling the water first, I totally agree with you!
Putting the eggs into the boiling water, it seems to me like you are risking getting splashed by boiling water, and if you try to dump them in real quick, you are more likely to crack the shells.
Start with everything in the pot, this isn't pasta, the eggs won't stick together! :)
  • Aug 29, 2008 @ 10:01 am | delete
Furthermore, I followed Susan's instructions precisely and I can assure you that this lens is the ultimate authority on boiling eggs.
  • Aug 27, 2008 @ 5:22 pm | delete
Don't be afriad to whomp on those eggs. Crack the hell out of 'em. That makes up for a lot of cooking technique that may not be the best. The shell just falls off.
  • annetteghallowell Aug 7, 2008 @ 7:37 pm | delete
I love eggs every way you can make them. I always forget how long to boil eggs to make them hard boiled. From now on, this is my reference page! 5* favorite!
  • totalhealth Aug 5, 2008 @ 1:04 pm | delete
nice lens. when boiling eggs, my mom taught me to put it inside the plastic before putting in in the water so that the shell will not break.
  • triathlontraining Jul 30, 2008 @ 3:28 pm | delete
What a fun lens! I've found out the hard way that there is a good and bad way to boil and/or store the hard boiled egg. Some end up funky...
...maybe it's just that they were bad eggs.

Found via SquidCamp. Thanks Seth! :)
  • jvillekid Jul 30, 2008 @ 3:31 am | delete
Great lens! My experience of putting the eggs into the boiling water usually ends up giving me cracked hard boiled eggs. I put them in water first now!
  • Tiddledeewinks Jul 29, 2008 @ 9:58 pm | delete
I love the egg salad sandwich pic in Flickr. How about how to peel the hard boiled eggs? Gave u 5 *'s!
  • johndilbeck Jul 29, 2008 @ 7:56 pm | delete
Many years ago, when I got my first microwave, I learned quickly that it's not a good idea to boil eggs in a microwave. It took a long time to clean that oven after the eggs exploded. I never thought there was so much to learn about boiling an egg. Great info here.
  • BigGirlBlue Jul 29, 2008 @ 3:23 pm | delete
This was good. My husband and I always fight about when the eggs should be added: before the water boils or after... he was right (I won't tell).
  • XP Jul 29, 2008 @ 1:28 pm | delete
DID YOU KNOW ... store bought eggs are easier to peel after boiling than farm fresh eggs, because there is a larger air sac. True! Lensrolling this to /chickenberries and wishing you an eggsellent day! :)
  • beeobrien Jul 29, 2008 @ 12:29 pm | delete
Great lens. You've covered it. Has anybody done How to Boil Water? I saw the book above, pretty cool.

My method is to put the eggs in cold water, bring to a boil, cover, turn the heat OFF and let them sit at least twenty minutes. The beauty of this method is that you can't overcook them. If they sit there an hour, they're still okay. I think the idea may have come from Martha Stewart.
  • Frankster Jul 29, 2008 @ 12:07 pm | delete
Excellent lens! I love eggs so your lens is now a favorite! Bear hugs, Frankie

Both of my sons, when they moved into their own apartments, called me within the first week to ask me how to boil eggs. Yep, people need to know this stuff! (You'd a thought I would have taught them already!)
  • chefkeem Jul 25, 2008 @ 5:20 pm | delete
    Brilliant lens idea, Susan!
  • Kuan Yew Jul 25, 2008 @ 3:01 am | delete
This page really amazes me, boiling eggs is a simple process, yet, after reading this lens, I find that there's actually an art in boiling eggs lol, cool stuff!
  • Michael Jul 24, 2008 @ 3:50 pm | delete
Personally, I boil the water, gently cradle eggs in with a spaghetti laddle, and boil for 15 minutes. Then I shock them with a good dose of cold tap water.

I read/viewed an interesting post/video here at http://snurl.com/34ftt where you add baking soda (raises pH of water) to the boiling eggs. When done and cooled, peel off a little of each end and 'blow' the egg out the hole.

Awesome lens! I can make three types of eggs - scrambled, scrambled, and scrambled.

Featured this on my /craftyeastereggs lens.

    Excellent lens!
  • EverythingMouse Jul 17, 2008 @ 6:35 pm | delete
I never put salt in the water, and always put the egg in the water and bring to the boil. I have no idea if that is the best way though! Just the way I have always boiled an egg I guess.....
  • Comfortdoc Jul 16, 2008 @ 10:25 pm | delete
Great job. Now I'll know where I can go to figure out how to boil eggs the next time I decide to try.
