Changing the War

Reflections on the war in Iraq
Boing Boing: Three years ago: Iraq war zeitgeist in BoingBoing archives
On March 20, 2003, the US-led invasion of Iraq began. I don't spend much time sifting through BoingBoing's archives, but just now I clicked on March, 2003 to look back at posts we made about the beginning of the war...

Changing the Copyright

Wikipedia defines Copyfight as
"The copyright social conflict (sometimes jocularly referred to as the copyfight) is a name given to the broader social conflict between copyright owners who wish to control the acquisition and subsequent use by others of material they have copyrighted, and individuals who wish for barriers on information such as copyright to be relaxed or removed entirely."
Boing Boing: Layperson's intro to the Copyfight
Copyfighters aren't saying that information should be free. We are saying that as consumers of media (film, television, software, literature, etc.) we have certain rights that we would like to protect. One of these rights is Fair Use. Fair Use means that you can reuse copyrighted work without permission as long as you are commenting on it, or copying/parodying the original. Fair Use is what allows you to quote song lyrics when writing a review of a new CD. Another right is First Sale. First Sale means that when you buy something, you own it and are thus entitled to sell it to someone else. First Sale is what allows you to buy a book, read it, then sell it on half.com for someone else to enjoy...
Boing Boing: Take the copyfight home
If you can set the rules, you can win the contest. That's the major reason the entertainment cartel is winning the debate over copyright in the Digital Age...
